Sentinel Snapshot

My grandpa was in the Army and an active member of the American Legion in Yakima. It's been several years since he passed away, but I'm sure he was smiling down on Tuesday as I got to welcome the American Legion and Auxiliary from Anderson Island to campus to thank our JROTC drill team cadets for participating in their community's 9/11 memorial ceremony last month. Even better, they presented three of our staff members who are also veterans with Quilts of Honor! LTC Matt Hill and SSG Aaron Pierce lead our JROTC program, which is expanding quickly under their thoughtful leadership. (We just added a drone program last week!) And, a familiar friendly face to those of you who have come to our building, Mrs. Carla Cooper-Haamid was also recognized for her service in the Army. It was a great day to be a Sentinel!

Homecoming week is one of the most exciting times of the year at Steilacoom High School, and we encourage all students and families to join in the celebration! From spirited dress-up days and athletic events to the big game and dance, Homecoming is more than just fun it’s an opportunity for students to connect, show pride in their school, and strengthen their sense of belonging within the Sentinel community. When students participate in these traditions, they build confidence, create lasting memories, and experience the joy of being part of something larger than themselves. We look forward to seeing our Sentinels and their families come together to make this year’s Homecoming one to remember!

We are fortunate to have many kind people in our community who are working together to give food for Thanksgiving to families in our district who need help. Usually, the food includes ham or chicken instead of turkey. Please know that you will have to cook some of the food at your home.

Families will need to pick up their food at Steilacoom High School on November 21st, during the school day. Each family will get one meal.

If you need assistance, please send the following information to your student's school counselor:

• Name(s) of parents or guardians in your family
• Name of one SHS student in your family
• Best daytime phone number
• Number of adults and children in your home

Supplies are limited (first come, first serve). Please reply as soon as possible if you want to participate.

The last day to send your entry is October 31, 2025.

Class of 2026 Families, If you’re not already part of the Booster Club, consider joining! It’s a wonderful way to support our students and help make high school memorable.

The City of DuPont has a variety of events happening all month long for kids, teens, and families to enjoy. From fall festivities to Halloween fun, there’s something for everyone!

SHSD is offering Vacine Clinics. Use the QR code below to register.

On October 16, our school will join millions of others in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill and practice the steps: Drop, Cover, and Hold On.

This is a good time to remember that we all play a role in keeping our students safe during an emergency. It is natural to want to protect your child by coming to school - but arriving or calling can delay or prevent first responders from reaching our school to help.

Here's how you can help us Stay Safe Together:

• Stay Home. Keep our roads and phone lines clear so first responders can reach our school quickly to help.
• Stay Informed. Look for updates through ParentSquare and our website. In some situations, accurate information may take time to verify and share.
• Be Ready. Be prepared to follow instructions from the district or public safety officers.

After an emergency, students will only be released to individuals listed in Skyward who present a photo ID. Please check your contact information and emergency contacts in Skyward and submit any changes to our school office.

Staying Safe Together also means reporting safety concerns to our district - this can be done anonymously by texting or calling 855-745-3674.

Thank you for your support and helping us keep every student safe, every day.

Steilacoom Historical School District uses ParentSquare for school communication, primarily with email, text and app notifications. ParentSquare automatically generates an account for each parent, using their preferred email address and phone number. We encourage parents to access their accounts so they can download the mobile app and update their preferences on when and how they are notified.
