Leader in Me

Social emotional learning is a big part of our daily routine. We firmly believe that in order to teach our students, we have to understand our students. We have been implementing pieces of the Leader in Me throughout the year but our main program in the past has been Second Step. This year we are diving deeper and will be implementing the Leader in Me with more fidelity. What is the Leader in Me?

Here is a short youtube video that provides a brief overview of the 7 Habits for Happy Kids. For the months of November and December we will be (re) introducing the 7 habits to the students and then beginning in January, we will go deeper in each habit.

THE LEADER IN ME, Habit 1: Be Proactive

“Be Proactive means to take responsibility for your choices and behaviors. Habit 1 is the key to all of the other habits; that’s why it comes first. Be Proactive says, “I am in charge of my own life. I am responsible for whether I am happy or sad. I can choose how I react to other people or situations. I am in the driver’s seat.” Young children can easily learn to understand that different choices yield different results. The goal is to teach them to think about those results before they decide what to do. Discussion can focus on taking care of themselves, taking care of their things, reacting or not reacting to others’ behavior, planning ahead, and thinking about what the right thing to do is.”

Daylight Saving Time Daylight Saving Time

It’s my favorite time of year—clock change weekend is here! Don’t forget, in the fall we “fall back” by setting our analog clocks back one hour. Before you go to bed on Saturday night, be sure to turn those clocks back. Most digital clocks should update automatically, but double-check the clock in your car just in case. While you’re at it, it’s a great reminder to replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for safety.

Coffee with the Principal Coffee with the Principal

Please join us if you are able. We will be watching two videos to share the conversations we have with our students about substance abuse awareness. If you are unable to join, I am leaving the videos linked here for your review and reference.

Having these conversations with our children helps equip them with the skills to know when to say yes and when to say no.

Parent Conferences Parent Conferences

Parent–teacher conferences are an important opportunity for us to work together to support your child’s learning and growth. When you take the time to meet with your child’s teacher, it shows your child that their education matters and that you are a team in helping them succeed.

Please make every effort to reserve a time and date to meet with your child’s teacher. Your participation helps us celebrate your child’s progress, discuss goals, and address any questions or concerns early on. We will meet you where you are. Teachers can meet with you via zoom or in person.

Tips for a Successful Conference

1. Arrive at the predetermined time and date of conference via Zoom or in person

2. Be attentive to what the teacher is explaining

3. Ask questions and look at work samples

4. Focus on the positive improvements

5. Help your child set goals for the next reporting period

The conferences will be held from November 17 – November 21, 2025

Monday, November 17th, 12:53 dismissal for conferences

Tuesday, November 18th, 1:28 dismissal for conferences

Wednesday, November 19th, 12:53 dismissal for conferences

Thursday, November 20th, 12:53 dismissal for conferences

Friday, November 21st, 12:53 dismissal for conferences

After school YDP program will operate from dismissal daily until 6:00 pm.

Attendance Attendance

Coming to school every day, on time and ready to learn, is one of the most important habits a child can build in elementary school. When students attend regularly, they develop a strong sense of routine, stay connected with their teachers and classmates, and make steady progress in learning new skills. This is also where stronger friendship can be forged.

When children miss school often, even for reasons that seem small, it can be hard for them to get back into the rhythm of learning. They may struggle to catch up on lessons, feel less confident in class, and miss out on friendships and classroom activities that help them grow. Over time, irregular attendance can make it harder for students to build responsibility and independence—skills that are essential for success in middle school and beyond.

If your child is healthy, please make every effort to have them at school each day. Establishing good attendance habits now sets the foundation for a lifetime of learning, consistency, and success.

As of October 31st, we have 71% of our population at proficient. That's the green band. And that's amazing. We have 16% or 50 students in the basic/yellow band. Finally, we have 13%, or 40 students at chronic/red.

If you are in basic (yellow), please try your hardest to not fall into the chronic (red). If you are at chronic, it's not too late to turn the rest of the year around. Finally, if you are at proficient, continue being the rock stars that you are!

Remember, if you go to the doctor or dentist and take the whole day off, it's an excused absence, but it still counts as an absence. Thank you for being our partners in helping your child thrive!

iReady Challenge iReady Challenge

We are looking to see if students are completing the lessons with a score of 70% or better. My Assignments on the platform are lessons teachers specifically selected and assigned to your student to supplement and reinforce what they are learning in the classroom. If they are working on iReady at home, please have them do it next to you so you can see what types of stories and math lessons your students are doing at school. Per the maker of iReady, academic success can be supported by usage of the program if there's an average of 2 lessons completed per subject area, per week with a 70% or higher passage rate. Let's get onboard!

SNAP SNAP

I want to share important information that affects many of our families. As Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding is scheduled to end on November 1, food benefits will be reduced for thousands of families across Los Angeles and may leave many facing difficult circumstances.

Please know that this change does not impact school meals. Our school will continue to serve three nutritious meals each day — breakfast, lunch, and supper — to all students, at no cost. In addition, Los Angeles Unified’s Supper Program is available for all children ages 1–18, including community members who are not enrolled in our schools. The program operates at school dismissal, Monday through Friday at most schools, including here at Multnomah ensuring that every child has access to a healthy meal. Visit lausd.org/foodhelp for Supper locations. The meal is served at dismissal for 30 minutes and must be eaten on campus.

To support our community during this challenging time, we are also launching a schoolwide Food Drive to help replenish supplies at our local food banks and community pantries. Together, we can make a real difference for families right here in our neighborhood. We are collecting non-perishable food items such as:

  • Canned fruits, vegetables, and soups
  • Rice, beans, and pasta
  • Peanut butter, cereal, and shelf-stable milk

Donations can be dropped off at the main gate. We'll have a cart. Every item you give will help a family facing food insecurity this season. We will be collecting beginning Monday, November 3rd - Tuesday, November 18th.

If your family could use additional assistance, please visit these community resources

for free food and support:

  • YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles: https://ymcala.org/foodprograms
  • Los Angeles Regional Food Bank: https://lafoodbank.org/find-food/pantry-locator/
  • LA County Parks and Recreation – Parks After Dark Meal Program: https://parks.lacounty.gov/parks-after-dark/

Our school community is strongest when we care for one another. If you or someone you know needs help, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our main office at 323-225-6005 or visit lausd.org/foodhelp for more information. We’re here to support you.

Thank you, as always, for your kindness, generosity, and partnership. When we come together, we show our students what compassion and community truly mean.
