Dear Naples Park Families,

As we near the end of the quarter, this next month promises to be a great one for both learning and fun. Regarding the learning, do you ask your Shark student each day after school “What did you learn today?” This is one question I would love for you to ask our NPE Sharks. Teachers share with them daily their learning goals, and how they can get good grades on that goal for each content area. Students knowing what they are trying to learn, as well as how they will be assessed, is a researched high yield strategy to learn rigorously and successfully. I am in awe of the teaching and learning I have seen here so far. Again, you can help with that by asking our students what they learned each and every day. We are looking forward to our Vocabulary Parade that will take place at the end of October. Please keep a look out for information in your child’s Wednesday Folder on this special event.

It is good to be at Naples Park Elementary School and together, we are Shark Strong.

October Literacy Spotlight

Fall into a Great Book!

October is a wonderful time to slow down, cozy up with a good book, and help your child grow as a confident, fluent reader. At Naples Park Elementary, we are continuing to build strong reading habits and skills every day. The simple things families do at home—reading together, talking about books, and encouraging rereading—can make a powerful difference!

How Can Families Help at Home?

Build Fluency and Comprehension Through Reading Practice

Fluent readers read accurately, smoothly, and with expression. The following simple strategies can have a powerful impact on your child’s growth as a fluent reader:

1. Encourage Rereading
Reading a familiar text more than once helps children deepen their understanding, become more familiar with the structure of the text, and strengthen accuracy, vocabulary, and comprehension.

2. Model Reading
Read a portion of the text aloud to your child. Model what fluent reading sounds like by reading smoothly, clearly, and with expression. Then invite your child to read it back to you.

3. Establish a Reading Time
Set aside a consistent time for reading each day. You can occasionally set a small goal, such as finishing a story or reading a certain number of words within a set amount of time. The goal is to encourage automatic and accurate reading—not simply reading quickly.

4. Provide Variety
Encourage your child to read a variety of texts, including fiction, nonfiction, magazines, poems, and books about topics they enjoy. When children are interested in what they are reading, they are more likely to stay engaged and practice their reading skills.

5. Grow Comprehension Through Conversation

Reading together doesn't have to end when the book closes! Talking about a story helps children think more deeply about what they read.

Try using open-ended questions that encourage your child to explain their thinking:

Question Starters You Can Use With Any Book:

  • What do you think…?
  • How do you know…?
  • What would happen if…?
  • Tell me more about…
  • What would you do…?
  • What happened when…?

6. Don't Forget to Give Wait Time!

After asking a question, give your child 3–7 seconds to think before expecting an answer. A short pause gives children time to process the question, organize their thoughts, and develop a thoughtful response.

Remember: There doesn't always have to be one "right" answer. Encourage your child to explain their thinking and use evidence from the text.

Adapted from New Worlds Reading. (2023, Jan. 18.) Asking Open-Ended Questions.

This Month's Literacy Challenge

Pick a book. Read it. Reread it. Talk about it!

Try reading the same favorite book more than once this month. During the first read, focus on understanding the story. During the second read, notice interesting words, details, or character actions. Then talk about the book using one of the question starters above.

A few minutes of reading and conversation each day can add up to big growth!

Keep Reading. Keep Talking. Keep Growing!

Math Minute with Mr. Masiello Math Minute with Mr. Masiello

Hello Families!

As we dive into October, our shark students continue to explore and learn new math concepts daily! I love hearing all the wonderful conversations students are participating in around campus regarding math as they explain their thinking to their peers. See below for this months topic which focuses on the Base Ten System. Understanding this system is essential for building a solid math foundation. It helps students grasp place value, addition, subtraction, and even more complex operations such as multiplication and division.
