The Turtle Times,BACK-TO-SCHOOL Parent Update for July - August, 2025

A Message from Principal Roth

Dear Safety Harbor Families,

Welcome back to our returning families, and a warm welcome to those joining us for the first time at Safety Harbor Elementary School! As a historic community school, we take pride in our rich tradition of family involvement and our shared commitment to student success. Being a Sea Turtle means being part of a caring, supportive, and high-achieving school community—and we’re so glad you’re here.

As we begin the new school year, our focus remains on creating exceptional experiences for our students while maintaining high expectations for all. Our dedicated SHES PTA plays a vital role in helping us achieve these goals. We encourage all families to join this incredible advocacy group and be active participants in your child’s educational journey. Visit their Facebook page for membership details, school updates, and community events.

We’re proud to share that Safety Harbor Elementary School has once again earned an “A” rating from the state! Our scores were among the highest in our school’s history—an achievement that reflects both academic excellence and the safe, supportive environment we strive to create for every student. While we celebrated student performance at the end of last year, we look forward to sharing this official recognition with our students when we return from summer break.

It’s also worth celebrating that Safety Harbor’s outstanding performance contributed to Pinellas County Schools being rated an “A” district for the second consecutive year!

Our goal is to kick off the year with positivity and continue building momentum as we grow our students and strengthen our practices as educators. A successful start begins with a safe and organized environment. Please take a moment to review the attached information regarding campus safety, arrival and dismissal procedures, and other important updates to help ensure a smooth transition into the new school year.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership. We’re looking forward to a fantastic year ahead!

Warm regards,
Lisa Roth
Principal

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL AUGUST 11, 2025

  • K-5th grade parents will be able to walk their child(ren) to class on the first day of school. Staff will be on hand at each hallway door to assist.
  • PK3 and VPK will give arrival directions at Open House as signing-in is a required part of their program.
  • Kindergarten only may also walk their child on day #2. For safety purposes, after day two we will be securing our campus; then we will maintain a secure campus for the remainder of the school year. We will have staff on hand to help scholars find their classrooms.
  • Please be sure your child knows how he/she will be getting home from school each day!! Start this way on Day #1 of school. If your child is a bus rider, have him/her ride the bus on day one. This prevents confusion later.
  • Students need to be seated & ready to learn promptly at 8:45 AM. Students will be marked as tardy if they are not in their classroom by 8:45 AM.
  • Pk3, VPK, KG & New Family Parents don't forget to stop by the Media Center after you drop off your students for some treats provided by our Safety Harbor PTA at the annual Boohoo-Yahoo breakfast (Aug. 11) until 9:00am.

NO STUDENT DROP OFF PRIOR TO 8:15AM

Per safety legislation. there are to be no students on campus prior to 8:15 AM. This is non-negotiable.

The car line gate will open at 8:15am. If you arrive prior to 8:15, the student is to stay in the car with you. If you walk or ride a bike, please adjust your schedule so that your child arrives between 8:15-8:35 AM. The school does not provide supervision for students prior to 8:15 AM. Club students & Patrols are the only exceptions and will be greeted by their sponsor. We need YOU to adhere to this safety concern. Thank you!

ONE-WAY TRAFFIC AM & PM

Please remember that the streets around the school are one-way in the morning from 7:45am to 8:45am and again in the afternoon until 3:45pm. You can be ticketed if a police officer sees you going the wrong way. More importantly, it is a safety concern. Please adhere to the correct directionality of the streets.

REMINDERS FOR BUS RIDERS

  • Make sure your child is at the bus stop 10 minutes prior to the assigned pick-up time.
  • Remind your child that there will be assigned seats and students are expected to sit in his/her assigned seat every day.
  • If you have multiple children riding the bus, the driver may ask for siblings to sit together.
  • Students are expected to adhere to bus rules at all times.

If you live more than 2 miles from the school and need to request a bus stop for your child, please contact the front office. A request will be made for a bus stop, for your child through the transportation department. This could take up to a week, so plan accordingly.

Parents of bus riders are encouraged to sign up for bus bulletin. Bus bulletin is a system that Pinellas County Schools uses to communicate transportation issues with schools and families. If you sign up, you will receive information regarding any changes to your child's route. The information could include a late pickup, a substitute driver, a change in route, or a number of other things. This is a great way to stay connected to transportation without having to call.

DAILY ARRIVAL AND PICK-UP PROCEDURES FOR CARS AND BUSES

PreK & VPK arrival and dismissal procedures are different from the other grade levels. The teachers will give parents specific instructions since parents are required to walk their children in and sign them in and out.

Kindergarten – 5th grade Arrival in the morning:

Car riders: you may drop your children off no earlier than 8:15 AM using the 5th AV N entrance only. Students will be directed to the cafeteria for breakfast then to their waiting areas. Those who eat at home will go directly to classrooms in Kdg, the first-grade hallway for first graders and the auditorium for 2nd through 5th graders.

We have adult supervision in addition to our student Safety Patrols to unload cars along the entire covered sidewalk (after the crosswalk), but students may exit cars at any gate from the passenger side of the car.

Students arriving by bus will be directed to the Media gate. After entrance through the Media gate, bus riders will either go to cafeteria to eat breakfast or to their assigned waiting area.

Students arriving on foot or by bicycle may enter at the Media Center gate or the K-Pod gate. These gates, like the car line gate will open at 8:15am and close at the first bell at 8:35am.

After the first bell, students will need to go to the front office to enter the school building. After the tardy bell at 8:45am, students will need to be escorted into the office with an adult in order to get a tardy slip.

Kindergarten – 5th grade Dismissal:

The procedures for afternoon pickup are as follows: Students will be released from class by announcements. Car riding students will be seated in the car line area until their car and gate color is announced over the loudspeaker. Students will meet their car at their assigned gate. Our main goal is to load many children as safely and efficiently as possible by loading seven cars at a time.

The car line gate will be opened at 2:50pm. Cars may not enter the bus circle before 3:10pm.

Students exiting the Media Center gate and the K-Pod gate will be released at the bell at 2:55pm. These gates are for exiting only. They will be closed after the last child or at 3:10pm.

Students remaining at the walking gates or in the car line after 3:10pm will be escorted to the front office to await pick-up.

HEADPHONES: USB with MICROPHONE

To support our students in using classroom technology effectively, we kindly ask that each student bring a pair of USB-A headphones with an attached microphone. These are important for activities such as online learning, testing, and interactive lessons.

Specifications:

  • Headphones must have an attached/built-in microphone
  • USB-A connection (not 3.5mm or Bluetooth)
  • Durable and comfortable for regular use

Please label the headphones with your child’s first and last name.

Thank you for your support!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL-ISSUED LAPTOP

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, parents of students in grades 1-5 over the next two weeks will receive an email that an assigned PCS laptop has been checked out to their child. When a PCS device is assigned to a student, an email notification is sent to the parent of record indicating a checkout of the device has occurred. Assigned laptop devices checked out to students prior to the first day of school will be distributed to students by their classroom teacher during the first week of school. This process is designed to allow us to distribute assigned devices to students as quickly as possible at the start of the school year to support learning.
