60 SECONDS WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT

SHS Honors English students created an “immersive experience” for their fellow classmates, centered around their reading of Lord of the Flies. The auditorium was transformed into an island with different activities for students. In addition, students also had the opportunity to tie the book’s characters and situations in a discussion of current themes of mental health with the SHS Student Mental Health Ambassadors. STATE BUDGET UPDATE & ITS IMPACT ON SCS

Every two years, the State of Ohio adopts a new budget. This process begins with the Governor’s proposal and continues through revisions by the House, the Senate, and finally a joint committee that sends the completed budget to the Governor for signature by June 30, 2025. The House has recently passed its version of the budget, and it is now under consideration by the Senate. Please click HERE to learn more about a few of the key elements of this proposed budget and the potential impact on Strongsville City Schools.

MUSTANG SPOTLIGHT - CASSI FOLLEN, INTERVENTION SPECIALIST AT SURRARRER ELEMENTARY

Cassi Follen is an Intervention Specialist at Surrarrer Elementary. Cassi has been a part of Surrarrer’s team for two years. She earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Bowling Green State University.

“My favorite part about working with my students is watching them grow both academically and socially/behaviorally throughout the school year. I love watching them become more independent as the year goes on. I also love being a safe space for my students. Seeing the joy when they come to school and do their best makes the challenging days worth it.”

“I think we have the best team here at Surrarrer! Everyone is truly here for the kids and to help them be the best versions of themselves. I also love how our building is fostering inclusion and all the teachers are so willing to collaborate to make sure all students are included and feel welcome.”

Thank you Cassi for all of your dedicated work with students and being part of a fantastic team at Surrarrer! #ModelMustang

SHS SENIOR NATHAN REDMON NOMINATED FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR (2025 DAZZLE AWARDS)

Strongsville High School Senior Nathan Redmon has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 2025 Dazzle Awards for his portrayal of Huey, the Michael Jackson obsessed “bad boy,” in the SHS Spring Musical production, Back to the 80’s. This was Nathan's first performance onstage in one of SHS's theatre productions. His previous theatre contributions have been running the light or sound board for Trap and Chicago: Teen Edition, along with stepping into the role of Assistant Stage Manager for You Can't Take It With You.

The Dazzle Awards inspire and honor excellence in high school musical theater and recognize the importance of musical theater and arts-education within the Northeast Ohio community. The program offers arts education opportunities throughout the school year including professional master classes, audition workshops, apprenticeships and more, and culminates regionally at Playhouse Square with the Dazzle Awards Ceremony, modeled after the Tony Awards®, to recognize outstanding musical theater productions and students. The 2025 Dazzle Awards Ceremony is in the KeyBank State Theatre on May 17, 2025 at 7:30 p.m.

Congrats, Nathan! We’re so proud of you. He has proven that giving 100% to every aspect of theatre can lead to growth and success!

SMS 6TH GRADE ELA STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN WWII DEBATE

Mrs. Scott’s 6th Grade Honors ELA class has been studying two novels this semester - BOMB by Steve Sheinkin and Sachiko by Caren Stelson. Both books center around World War II and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Students answered the following prompt in a journal - “As President of the United States, did Truman make the right decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki?” The culminating activity was an entire class debate, with the class dividing into groups of supporters and opponents looking at the issue from different perspectives (i.e., military, survivors, President Truman’s cabinet, etc.).

Students used research information from the two novels, watched videos for historical perspective, and researched articles to build their arguments for the debate. They debated during the entire class block (80 minutes). It made such an impact on the students, that many wanted the debate to carry over into a 2nd day!

SHS STUDENTS COMPETE IN BALDWIN WALLACE ACCOUNTING CONTEST

Last week, six of Mr. Vitale’s SHS Accounting Students had the opportunity to attend an Accounting Competition at Baldwin Wallace University. The students, divided into two teams, competed against other high schools in the region in a showcase of accounting knowledge, problem-solving, and presentation skills.

Team 1:
Luke Giuliano, Chrsitian Schulz, and Will Jevec
Team 2: Zaire Goddard, Luke Schubeck, and Jeramiah Petite - who earned an impressive 3rd place finish in the competition.

Participants were challenged to apply classroom concepts to a real-world scenario, collaborate effectively, and present their solutions to a panel of judges.
"It was great to see what we’re learning in class come to life," said Luke Giuliano. Jeramiah Petite added, "We really enjoyed collaborating as a team and putting together our presentation for the judges."

The event offered a unique opportunity for students to gain insight into careers in accounting and network with faculty and students at Baldwin Wallace University.

Ohio Poet Laureate Kari Gunter-Seymour disagrees. Names are somewhat central to our identities, maybe even helping to shape our destinies to some extent. Some of us have nicknames, and some famous people (including Beyoncé) are known by mononyms. Many of us just answer to whatever trendy, retro, or unique names our parents happened to choose for us BUT in this workshop, we are going to consider alternative names for ourselves—serious, silly, make believe or possibly outrageous, building on prompts, she will provide to kick start our creative brain cells. All are welcome, no prior writing experience is required.
