News from Mrs. Penny & Mrs. Barker
Next Week is Red Ribbon Week!
RED RIBBON WEEK
Red Ribbon Week will take place October 24-28th. Beyond spreading awareness on the dangers of drug and alcohol use, Red Ribbon Week also presents an excellent opportunity to teach students about the benefits of building lifelong healthy habits, physically, mentally, and emotionally. The content and discussions will be tailored to be developmentally appropriate for the different ages/grades at Rogers.
Here are our Red Ribbon Week Spirit Days:
Monday: We are WILD about making healthy choices! Wear mismatched, backwards, inside-out, neon, or animal print clothes.
Tuesday: We are on a journey to be drug free! Wear a shirt from your favorite vacation or favorite place to visit.
Wednesday: Our futures matter! Wear a college, junior high, high school, or sports shirt.
Thursday: It’s crazy to do drugs. Wear your craziest socks.
Friday: Our house is drug free! Wear house colors.

Mystery Reader Program Launch
The Mystery Reader program at Rogers Elementary provides parents/grandparents the opportunity to directly volunteer in their child's classroom. If you are interested in serving in this capacity, please ensure to complete a background check at least one week PRIOR to visiting your student's classroom.
A Mystery Reader program is ta guest reader, BUT their identity is kept secret to build anticipation and excitement. Teachers may even choose to give clues before they arrive to get the students extra excited!
One of the benefits of starting a guest reader program is that students LOVE welcoming others into their classroom. It is also a great way to mix things up and add a little spice our reading instruction. Students will hear fluent reading and another voice from a different adult. We have received feedback that family members and other significant adults love coming to see their Rogers students in action. An added benefit is that students will get to practice hosting others and sending thank you notes after the guest reader’s visit.
FISD Board Policy requires that each volunteer and/or mentor undergo a background check before working with students. You will be prompted to complete the background check during your VOLY account creation process. Keep an eye on your inbox for your background check approval (the process can take up to 3-5 business days). Once approved, you will be able to sign up directly for volunteer opportunities through the VOLY platform. To volunteer at Rogers Elementary, you will need to create a VOLY account by visiting https://friscoisd.voly.org.

Rogers Spelling Bee! Calling all interested 4th and 5th Graders!
We are excited to announce that Rogers will be participating in the Scripps National Spelling Bee again this year! We are thrilled to offer this optional experience to our students.
On October 6th students who are interested in participating in the initial and optional spelling competition were offered a practice page of words to take home to study. There are a lot of words, and not every word will be on the spelling test. (The list is linked below, too!)
Please see the timeline below for information about the Rogers Spelling Bee:
November 2, 2022 - Grade level spelling bee will be conducted.
November 4, 2022 - Top 10 finalists will be announced.
December 2, 2022- Campus wide spelling bee for top ten finalists!
January 19, 2023 - Our one Rogers’ winner will represent Rogers at Liberty High School in the District Spelling Bee.
February 16, 2023- The district winner will compete at Centennial High School
Thank you for your support as we aim to highlight the strengths of our students in the area of spelling and overall literacy. We look forward to the excitement ahead!
Upcoming Hearing and Vision Screening
On October 27, 2022 we will be screening Kinder, 1st, 3rd, 5th graders and new students to Frisco ISD for vision and hearing as mandated by Texas Education Code Title 25, Chapter 37 and Texas Risk Assessment for Type 2 Diabetes in Children (TRAT2DC) will be done per Texas Health and Safety Code Title 2, § 95.003.
If your student wears glasses or contacts, please make sure they bring them and wear them for their vision screening. Students may be re-screened at a later date. If after the second screening there is a concern regarding your student’s results, a referral notice will be sent home. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
You may choose to waive screening by the school by signing either the religious affidavit stating that the screenings conflict with the tenets and practices of a church or religious denomination of which you are an adherent or member, or the affidavit stating your child will be screened by their private physician and you will provide results to the school by January 30, of the current school year.

OCTOBER’S CHARACTER TRAIT SELF-CONTROL
Why does self-control matter?
Sometimes, what makes you happy right now isn’t good for you in the long run. For instance, junk food tastes great but isn’t healthy. Self-control powerfully predicts academic and professional achievement, physical and emotional well-being, positive social relationships, and financial security.
How do I encourage self-control in others?
Model it. Resolve to accomplish a goal of personal significance, then talk about obstacles and your plans to overcome them. Emphasize strategies you’ve found work especially well for you: “I’m not super motivated to exercise, but I now take the stairs instead of the elevator—that’s a start!”
Celebrate it. Praise children for waiting patiently. Notice when they plan ahead: “Great job getting all your stuff organized!” Appreciate ingenuity in navigating self-control dilemmas: “Keeping your cell phone in a different room is such a clever idea!”
Enable it. Establish family rules, like no cell phones at mealtimes. Create quiet, distraction-free areas for study and work. Keep fruit on the kitchen counter and hide junk food on a high shelf.
FISD Achieve Mentoring Program
If you have a child who may benefit from a menor, please contact Sera Bocian at bocians@friscoisd.org.
Achieve mentors are trained to empower at-risk students to develop greater capacity and skill to build and maintain positive relationships, set goals, make responsible decisions and connect within the community. Achieve mentors equip students to be future ready with FISD Character Strength Curriculum, while supporting the development of the whole child. By acting with integrity and empathy, mentors are a consistent and positive relationship source that empowers students to create connections within the school community and access to wraparound support services.
The FISD Achieve Mentoring program unites caring and committed adults from across the community to provide student support, inspire future success in school and life, and to elevate students beyond any limitation.
If you would like more information or if you would like to be a mentor, please see the Frisco Guidance & Counseling Website.
