English

We will be working through a short story unit to begin the year. We will be looking at a number of literary elements including plot structure, point of view, and conflict. The stories will be from a wide range of genres. We will have a compare/contrast essay that students will write at the end of the unit to compare different literary elements between two different stories. There will also be two other CSAs which go along with the unit.

Students also received an independent reading project and have selected a book to be reading on their own. These projects will be due October 7th.

Math

Welcome to 7th Grade Math! We have already jumped into our curriculum for the year. We are starting the year learning how to work with positive and negative numbers. Students will learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers and rational numbers. This is a skill that will be necessary for math not only for 7th grade, but for all math in the future too! We are really excited for the upcoming year and cannot wait to get to know each of our students and watch them grow in math!

Social Studies

Welcome from 7th grade social studies. We are so excited for this year that is sure to be full of new and exciting things!! This year in social studies we are going to explore geography and post-classical societies. This means we will discuss what happened in the world after the fall of the Roman Empire up to where Europe began exploring the world and established colonies in the Americas. We will look into different regional areas (Asia, Africa, the Americas, etc.) and discover how they all influenced each other, much like our world today. We begin with a geography unit reviewing the 5 themes of geography and demonstrating how geography affects history. We are ready to explore the world with you and looking forward to an amazing year! Go Dawgs!

Science

Welcome to Adams Middle School 7th graders. The 7th grade science team looks forward to meeting each and every one of you and developing a connection with you throughout the year. We are jazzed about science and hope that you can learn to appreciate some of the amazing things about science as well. We will spend the first week learning your names and putting those names to faces, engaging in a variety of activities and getting to know each other better, and lastly learning about how to effectively navigate through your experience at Adams by establishing some classroom expectations. The following weeks, we will delve into our first book on Ecology, learning about the environment around us and what makes it unique and interesting. See you on August 16th!!!

English

Our 8th grade students just finished their first assignment in Google Classroom for English. This assignment was a “Personal Profile” Slideshow which consisted of a refresher in how Google Classroom works, how to create Google slides, and gave us all an opportunity to get to know one another better.

We are beginning Unit 1 with a novel titled “Out of the Dust” by Karen Hesse. This novel is about a young girl who lives through the 1930’s Dust Bowl with her family on a farm in Oklahoma. Being a novel of the historical fiction genre, it gives insight to what it was like as a teenager during this tragic time in our country’s history and what it took to survive all the heartache that came along with it. Written in free verse poetry, the students will read, complete study guides, take quizzes and will end the novel with a summative test and a summative Theme essay.

Math

We are already off to a great start in 8th grade Math and Algebra. We are excited to see what we all remember from last year’s math, and ready to dive into learning the new material. We will start the year by solving equations and the real number system. This will give us all a chance to use our prior math knowledge, refresh the skills that we haven’t used in a while, and even jump into a few new concepts.

Social Studies

This year in Social Studies, we will be covering the 2nd half of American History. We will pick up where we left off last year with the Civil War and Reconstruction before continuing on with the rest of American History up to present day. Throughout the year we will cover some big topics like World War I and II, the Great Depression, the Civil Rights Movement, and Vietnam. We look forward to a great year learning about and from our past.

Science

Hello and welcome to 8th grade science! We have an exciting year ahead of us with a lot of cool science phenomena to explore together. We’ll begin the year investigating foundational principles of physics, later we’ll switch disciplines and examine the diversity of life. Lastly we’ll wrap the year up by studying the solar system and universe. Together we’ll assemble a “scientific tool belt” of skills that we will use to explain scientific concepts. We’ll mimic methods that real scientists use to make claims, gather evidence, and support their findings with reasoning.

For both in person and remote learning, Google Classroom will serve as our “Mission Control”. Here I will post announcements, links to textbook readings, and homework assignments. We have adopted a new textbook that we piloted last spring called HMH: Science Dimensions. Throughout a unit students will gather evidence as they work towards understanding scientific phenomena. Students will record these observations in a program that will serve as our "digital notebook". Notebooks are commonly used by experts in the field as a place to jot down and record notes and observations.

We have a challenging year ahead, but I am confident that it'll be a successful year as long as we work together. If you have any questions or concerns at any time please reach out to your science teachers.

7th Grade Family Consumer Science

Hello Adams Middle School! My name is Kelsey Sharp and I am the new Family and Consumer Sciences teacher for 7th grade. I am not new to the district, as I have spent the last three years as a Substitute Teacher. I am so excited to be starting my journey here at Adams! We have so many fun things planned in FCS this year and I can’t wait to start this journey with your students! If you need to reach me at any time, please email me at kesharp@nppsd.org and I will get back to you.

We are so excited that our sewing machines were updated over the summer by The Quilt Rack and Wool Cubby here in North Platte. Please help me extend a huge thank you to The Quilt Rack for providing our students with well working machines for their sewing projects this year! Needing some fabric for our projects this year, stop by The Quilt Rack and mention you are a student from Adams Middle School for a discount.

Have some extra cotton fabric laying around the house? Looking to get rid of it? Mrs. Sharp is accepting cotton fabric and felt donations for students to use during our Textiles and Sewing Units this year. They can be dropped off in the front office, or have your student bring them to school and dropped off in room 112.

8th Grade Family Consumer Science

In Family and Consumer Sciences we are finishing up our Clothing care unit with a home laundry assignment. We are currently talking about Personal finance and how they can set themselves up for financial peace in the future.

Welcome back to another awesome year at Adams!! Students in 7th grade music jumped right into studying music eras, and will be working with rhythms and song writing in the next few weeks. Students in Vocal Music have the opportunity to audition for AMS Swing Choir--I have sent out information via Remind and Classroom. Additionally, all AMS students have the opportunity to attend a field trip to see “Wicked”, the musical, in May. More information will follow for that trip.

7th Grade Band

With over 100 members strong, this year's 7th grade band is one of the largest ensembles in Adams history! It's so big, we had to take over half of the cafeteria! Everyone is excited to either pick up where they left off, or learn how to play for the very first time. We can't wait to see how much we improve over the course of the year!

8th Grade Band

We are having a busy start to the year, beginning with our first public performance on September 24th, for NPHS Homecoming. The 8th Grade band will be marching with the High school band that evening for halftime. We are hard at work learning how to march, play high notes and perform tough rhythms!
