Anglo European School
Week Commencing: 18th May 2026
Animal Encounters
At the Anglo, we welcome visitors from all walks of life - from successful entrepreneurs and pilots to firefighters and professors from overseas.
This week, however, we had two particularly unusual visitors: a swarm of bees and two peacocks that paid a visit to our school field before making a swift exit when the school photographer ran inside to grab a camera!
The majority of the bees were safely removed with the help of our local beekeeper; we also have a mother colony in the Willow Tree which we monitor closely with local experts.
Bees are vital to global ecosystems and food security, pollinating flowers and crops and many fruit and vegetables we need in a healthy diet. They are key to ecosystems health AES is proud to support this local habitat. We need pollinators!
In the meantime, we hope that the two peacocks have made it home safely from their Ingatestone adventures! Needless to say, our school remains a wonderfully diverse and colourful place.
IB Collaborative Science Project Showcases Student Inquiry and Teamwork
Nearly 50 IBDP and ESS students took part in this year’s Collaborative Science Project, a core requirement of the IBDP Science course. Held across two days — 22nd April and 8th May — the project brought together students from different scientific disciplines to investigate real‑world questions linked to the theme “The New School Build.”
Day 1 – 22nd April: Designing and Conducting Investigations
Working in mixed‑specialism groups, students selected their own research titles and designed methods for collecting meaningful scientific data. Each group approached the theme from a unique angle, resulting in a diverse range of investigations, including:
- Biodiversity surveys across the Anglo site, cataloguing species and assessing habitat variety.
- Green classroom solutions exploring sustainable ideas for the new school build.
- Water quality testing using pH and water hardness measurements from locations around the school.
- Classroom environment monitoring through CO₂ readings, temperature measurements and light‑intensity comparisons.
Students collaborated closely — often with peers they had never worked with before — to gather data, analyse results and begin constructing their scientific posters.
Day 2 – 8th May: Exhibition and Reflection
On the second project day, students presented their completed posters to fellow participants, staff and visiting Year 10 Triple Science students. Groups confidently explained their research aims, methods and conclusions, many delivering their presentations multiple times to different audiences.
To conclude the project, students reflected on their teamwork, communication and problem‑solving skills, considering how effectively they worked within their groups and what they learned from the collaborative process.
Students reflections:
- “I loved this project as it helped me learn more about all types of science by combining chemistry, biology and ESS to examine water quality. I’ve also improved my presentation and collaboration skills and have learnt how to make a professional science poster. I think the collaborative science project helped people come together”.
- “I really enjoyed the collaborative project, I feel that my leadership skills increased as a result and presenting it was also quite fun”.
- “Working together as a team and using each one of our subject strengths allowed us to build a strong case on things we wish to see incorporated into the design. This project showd me the importance of teamwork and critical thinking".
Outstanding Catering Department
Our internationally diverse catering team is a real strength, especially during themed events and International Day. Students can often be heard practising their Spanish with Mrs Garcia from Venezuela and Mandarin with Ms Man from Hong Kong. In addition, we are proud to have team members from Britain, Romania, Albania and Slovakia and they were excited to fly their home flags on International Day. The enthusiasm and cultural richness of the team have created an engaging, inclusive dining experience for our whole school community. Last week, they had a spot check inspection and were awarded with a fabulous Grade 5 for hygiene, which is the highest score awarded by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) . Keep up the good work ladies!

SPORT
The Summit Champions!
A few weeks ago, Year 11 student, Janine, travelled to Orlando, Florida to compete at The Summit Championship — one of the most prestigious end-of-season events in all-star cheerleading. The Summit is not an open competition; teams across the world must earn a bid by placing among the top performers at qualifying events throughout the season. With nearly 1,000 teams from across the United States and around the world competing, it is widely regarded as the international championship of all-star cheerleading for her division.
We are very proud to share that Janine's team won the championship in their category. It was a remarkable achievement and the result of a whole year of extremely hard work, dedication, and teamwork. Congratulations to all the team!
Football and Cricket Star, Priyana
This year, Year 9 student, Priyana has been playing for Colchester United Women U14s and has been offered the opportunity to continue with them again next season. Alongside this, Priyana has continued playing for Barking FC on Sundays, where the team successfully remained in the top division of the Essex County Girls League A Division this season. She has also continued her futsal development with Finta Futsal, which has really helped develop her technical side of the game. Over the coming weeks, she has upcoming trials with Millwall Lionesses, Crystal Palace F.C. Women and Charlton Athletic Women, so she will be reviewing all options carefully before deciding where to play next season.
As football finishes for the summer, Priyana will now be concentrating more on cricket with Hornchurch Athletic Cricket Club. She has additionally represented the MCC Foundation this year and we were delighted to see her top score in their 3rd place play-off match.
We are extremely proud of her commitment, attitude and work ethic across both sports whilst continuing to balance her school commitments. Priyana proves that hard work and commitment pays off and we look forward to watching her sports career progress.
