Principal News
Greetings Washington Families,
Spring is here! This is a great time to promote more outdoor activities for our children and less screen time! Less screen time usually leads to happier, healthier, and more focused children. We know it is not always easy to minimize screen time in our digital world, but we hope to work together to promote a healthy balance for all of our students.
As the days grow longer, keeping students focused on learning can be difficult. With just a few months left before summer, every day of learning counts! Let’s work together to keep students engaged, attending school consistently, and striving for success. We appreciate the teamwork!
Take care and stay connected!

First Grade News
Happy Spring!
This month, we finished up our math unit on place value and moved on to adding two-digit numbers to one and two-digit numbers. We talked about making a ten to help us add and the beginnings of regrouping. We showed the students different ways to add the numbers together to help them find what works best for them. We continue to encourage the students to use cubes, draw a picture, and know their basic math facts.
In Skills, we finished up talking about animals and writing their animal reports, which turned out so amazing! The classes loved reading about the animals and writing about them. We have been focusing on breaking the code spellings for different sounds. We have found that there are many different ways to spell some sounds and have been busy finding those spellings in our reader, Kate’s Book, about a girl who goes to visit her Doba (grandmother) in the southwest and has some great adventures.
We continue to have spelling lists going home every week. You can help your child study by helping them break down the word into its sound parts, write the word in many different ways, play a matching game, and write the word in sentences.
We finished up our learning about the Solar System and are now learning about the History of the Earth. We are learning so many interesting facts and debunking myths we have heard about the inner and outer cores, about the difference between magma and lava, and we will be learning about the different types of rocks, and a small amount about fossils and dinosaurs.
As a Leader in Me school, we are always talking about proactive and reactive language and behaviors. We encourage students to think proactively about their learning and friendships and to be leaders of their learning. Our students will soon be going off to second grade, and we are working hard to encourage them to be problem solvers, leaders, and keep the end in mind. We, the first-grade teachers, are expecting more from our students to prepare them for the next stage of their learning and growth. We are supporting them in their growth through daily reminders to be proactive and putting first things first.
With it being Spring in Iowa, the temperatures are always fluctuating from morning to afternoon. To help your child out, please continue to send a coat, hat, and gloves with them to wear in the morning. A sweatshirt is not a proper coat to wear outside when the temperatures are at or near freezing. They can have a sweatshirt at school to wear when the temperatures warm up for long sleeves.

Curriculum
The month of March, K-1 students began learning problem-solving skills. They learned to
say the problem, think of solutions, explore consequences, and pick the best solution. Students
learned to calm strong feelings, if needed, before working on solving a problem. The students
had a few homelinks sent home for them to practice these skills with their family. In preschool
we continued Al’s Pals lessons about feelings. This involved identifying feelings, showing
feelings, and situations in which the feelings were likely to occur. Students also practiced
calming strategies when having a strong feeling. If you have any questions, feel free to contact
me at (641) 472-2110 or Kelsie.roland@fairfieldsfuture.org.
PBIS News
We want to recognize our February students of the month. These students showed how

STEM Family Night
Over 200 family members participated in our STEM family night in March. Students and their families explored a variety of science, technology, engineering, and math stations. STEM lessons for younger students encourage play and exploration, using questions to stimulate curiosity, and engaging in hands-on activities. The STEM activities foster critical and creative thinking. Families also enjoyed a pizza supper.
PBIS 2nd Trimester Reward
For our 2nd trimester PBIS reward we partnered with one of Mrs. Smithburg's high school science classes. The high school science class brought volcano and Hot Wheel car experiments for the Washington students to explore. The high school student's model more than just science experiments. They also model positive behavior and serve as peer models. The elementary students not only got to enjoy the experiments. They also got to learn from someone other than their classroom teacher. All the students had a positive learning experience.
Literati Book Fair
The Literati Book Fair will be coming to Washington the week of April 14th. This school fundraising event provides students and their families with the opportunity to purchase books in-person or online. Book discovery is magical for young children, igniting literacy skills and a love for reading. Thank you for your support of our Literati Book Fair.
Retired Teachers Continue to Serve Our Students
A group of devoted, retired educators will be gracing the classrooms of Washington as they volunteer their time and talent to come read to small groups of our students. We are super excited and extremely thankful to these wonderful, retired teachers.
Spring FAST Testing
Our Spring Fast testing will begin in April. Families can support their child during this time by helping them have a growth mindset (an I can do this attitude), encouraging them to do their best, making sure they are well rested, making sure they have eaten, and making sure they are in attendance and on time.
