The Underwood Way

Comets Elementary Newsletter March 2026

The UnderwoodWayComets Elementary Newsletter March 2026

February can be a tough month. Between the cold weather and the long stretch of winter, many of us start to feel those winter blues. Thankfully, we are now in March, and we are hopeful that it will bring some nicer weather! However, please remember that winter is not quite over yet—students should still come to school with appropriate winter gear and not switch to shorts just yet.

We have Parent-Teacher Conferences coming up this month, and we are looking forward to meeting with all of you to talk about the great progress your student(s) have made this year. Please keep an eye out for the conference sign-up email coming soon.

March is also Reading Month, which means lots of fun literacy activities throughout the school! Who knows—maybe more students will earn the chance to pie a teacher in the face again! Be sure to check out the video below and encourage your children to keep reading at home. (the kids thought this was great!)

With about three months of school left, we want to keep the great momentum going here at Underwood Elementary. Thank you for your continued support. As always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s education—we truly value partnering with you to support their success.

Attendance Reminders Attendance Reminders

We’d also like to share a quick reminder about attendance. Per our attendance policy, letters are sent home when a student reaches 5, 10, 15, and 20 days absent. If your child has been absent due to a medical, dental, or vision appointment, please send in an appointment slip or note so we can code those absences as medical. If the office/school nurse sends a student home from school due to illness, those absences are also coded as medical and do not count toward the total absences used for attendance letters.

Please know that we are here to partner with you and your family and are happy to work together to support and improve student attendance. Thank you for your continued cooperation and support!

Please reach out with any questions or concerns~

Staff Spotlight Staff Spotlight

Ms. Sarah Helmuth--Preschool Teacher

As a first-year teacher and recent graduate of the University of Mary, she has already made a strong impact in our school community. Originally from Montana, where her family currently ranches, she made the move to Underwood and has embraced the charm of small-town life.

She brings a variety of talents beyond the classroom and is known for being a take-charge person who jumps right in to help wherever needed. Her positive attitude, work ethic, and willingness to learn have made her transition into the Underwood Elementary family incredibly smooth.

We are so grateful to have her as part of our team and look forward to all the great things she will continue to accomplish with our students and school community!

with Mrs. Nagle

For our Accelerated Reader program this year, I am selecting “AR Stars of the Month.” These will be either the student in each grade earning the most points for the month or a student who has made significant improvement. They will be posted in the hallway outside the Library. February’s AR Stars are: Emerson - 2nd, Penelope - 3rd, Emalyn - 5th, and Evelyn - 6th. Way to read!

We have several students working hard to earn a ticket to the AR 100 Point Field Trip! Grades 2-6 students will have until roughly the end of April to earn 100 points and a spot on the field trip. Students around halfway there to encourage on are: Avery Evans, Korver Hunt, Emalyn Haseleu, Macy Sem, Evelyn Worthington, and Pearce Levey. Anyone can still make it, though, if they keep reading!

During February, PreK heard stories and did crafts/activities relating to Groundhog’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and kindness. Kindergarten-2nd grade students learned some basic features of the computer and worked to create something using a digital tool (K - Paint, 1st & 2nd - Google Slides). Grades 3-4 conducted research and created presentations on planets (3rd) and inventions (4th). Grade 5 also conducted research on presidents, and they used their research to create either a Kahoot quiz or Slides presentation. Grade 6 learned how to evaluate websites for bias, accuracy, authority, currency, and relevance. They also started conducting research on a topic of their choice.

Reading Month is HERE! Our theme this year is “Ready, Set, Read!” A calendar of events and dress-up days was sent home with elementary students and shared via the app. There is also a Reading Challenge students can participate in throughout the month, and they will earn a prize if they complete it! Grades PreK & Kindergarten have a coloring tracker for their reading, and grades 1-12 are invited to participate in the Sora challenge. Instructions are included in the handouts sent home and app announcement.

Our annual Scholastic Book Fair will be open March 12th-March 26th! A neat feature they have added called “Share the Fair” is available for anyone wanting to help students who otherwise may not be able to get anything from the Fair. Here’s the link for those interested: https://shop.scholastic.com/stf/fund?orgUCN=600082704. Please email or message me with any specific requests as to how the funds are used. Flyers and a letter detailing when elementary classes will be attending the Book Fair will be coming home this week. Thank you for your support!

The Bookmobile will be here on Thursday, March 26th. Please help remind students to return Bookmobile items if they haven’t already. Thank you!

Please reach out to angie.nagle@underwoodschool.org or contact me via Rooms with any questions, ideas, or concerns. Thank you!
