YCIS-SV CommunityConnectionAugust 23, 2024

Dear YCIS-SV Community,

Happy Friday! Congratulations on completing the first two weeks of our new school year! Your dedication and enthusiasm have already set the stage for an incredible year ahead.

Starting a new school year is always a mix of excitement and challenges, but your hard work and passion have shone through from day one. Students, you've approached these first weeks with energy, curiosity, and a willingness to learn. Teachers, you've inspired your students with your creativity and care, and you've taken the time to listen to parents' hopes and concerns, laying the foundation for a strong, supportive partnership between home and school. Parents, your involvement and support have been invaluable as we embark on this journey together.

As we wrap up these first weeks, let’s take a moment to celebrate the small victories and milestones we've already achieved. It’s these moments that build the momentum for the growth, joy, and success that lie ahead.

Thank you to everyone—students, teachers, parents, and staff—for all you do to make a difference in the lives of our students and within our school community. As Helen Keller wisely said, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." Together, we are creating a nurturing environment where every student can thrive.

Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable weekend, See you on Monday!

Regards,

YCIS Senior Leadership Team (Kevin, Vivian & George)

Our ECE Campus is Settling In

We wanted to take a moment to share how delighted we are with the fantastic start to the school year. Our young learners at the ECE Campus are settling into their classrooms and routines well. It's been a joy to watch them explore their new environments and form connections with their classmates and teachers.

This week, our TK classes had their first weekly assembly. We used this opportunity to get to know each other better by introducing ourselves, learning about the YC logo and name, and creating a sense of community. It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved.

We are looking forward to a wonderful year together!

Elementary & Middle School (K-8) Elementary & Middle School (K-8)

In the first two weeks of the new school year, we've focused on team-building activities to create a fun and engaging environment for our students. Our primary goal has been to help students adjust to daily routines and understand expectations, setting a positive tone for the months ahead. We've also introduced small group instruction, allowing for personalized learning experiences tailored to each student's needs. The BanQ board has played a key role in enhancing interaction between teachers and students, making learning more dynamic and interactive. These efforts reflect our commitment to building a strong classroom community while supporting each student's academic growth.

Additionally, at the start of the school year, we’ve been focusing on cultivating the right mindset for learning! Our students have been exploring how their brains grow and change through effort and practice. Jo Boaler from Stanford University teaches that everyone can excel in math with the right approach. Her research shows that our brains develop when we embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, and persist in trying. This growth mindset is essential for success in math and beyond!

You can explore these ideas further with these videos:

  • Jo Teaching Visual Dot Card Number Talk

During the Week of Inspirational Math, our students participated in activities that encourage a growth mindset, such as Number Talks, Visual Patterns, and Open Middle Problems. We’re continuing to build on these experiences by embracing challenges and celebrating progress. Let’s support our students as they develop a positive math mindset and apply these principles to their daily learning.
