Message from Principal Groves - Week of March 11, 2024 Message from Principal Groves - Week of March 11, 2024

Dear Blacklick Families:

It was wonderful to see so many families at our Donuts with Grownups event last week! Thank you to the PRIDE Partner PTO and Mrs. Goare, Mrs. Valido, Mrs. Waxler and Mrs. Davidson for all of your efforts to put this event together! We are very thankful to have such a supportive community at Blacklick!

As a reminder, there is no school for students on Monday, March 11. This is a work day for staff. We will welcome students back to the building on Tuesday, March 12.

This Friday, your child will be bringing home his/her report card for quarter 3. Please review the report card and sign the report card envelope. Please return the signed envelope to your child's teacher. The copy of the report card can stay at home. If you have any questions regarding your child's progress so far this school year, please reach out to your child's teacher.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns at 614-759-5100 or by email at grovesk@gjps.org.

Respectfully,

Kristen Groves

March Madness at Blacklick! March Madness at Blacklick!

zoom_out_map

What do you think of when you hear March Madness? Well at Blacklick - we think of BLACKLICK PRIDE!

For the month of March, students can earn links for showing Blacklick PRIDE. We are calling this initiative March Madness. Students that receive links take them back to their classroom to add to their homeroom collection. The homeroom (per grade level) with the largest numbers of links at the end of each week gets to vote on a reward.

We kicked off March Madness this past week and it was a huge hit with our students! We passed out a total of 1,387 links to recognize students that were showing Blacklick PRIDE (respectful, responsible, positive, prepared, safe). We are so proud of all of our students. The first week homeroom winners will be announced on Tuesday morning and the links will set back to zero for this week.

Please tell your child to keep up the great work and continue working hard to show Blacklick PRIDE!

Art Update in Second Grade

2nd graders have been learning about the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai and his series, “The 36 Views of Mt. Fuji”. Feel free to ask your 2nd grader how the grade wave painting connects to this mountain! Hokusai was known to have some unique approaches to his art making, so inspired by this we are replicating this painting using non- traditional art materials like cotton balls, q-tips and chopsticks!

Library in Grade 2

Second graders have continued discussing ways that we can be safe online and find media balance. We took a break to read about all the jobs involved in building things. Then, they built in groups using dominos, which required practice and patience!

Music Update for Second Grade

Second graders learned songs about Blacklick History, Lunar New Year, and Valentine’s Day this month! A favorite was “Nian the Dragon” – a song tale about the ancient Chinese New Year’s legend.

Ukuleles were a big hit with second graders! We will continue to practice our skills from now through fifth grade!

Students learned the “Pout Pout Fish” song, using the F and C7 chords on the ukulele!

BES Staff Favorite Things

The Blacklick PRIDE Partner PTO has complied a list of the staff's favorite things. It is important to understand the teachers are not asking for gifts. We know that many parents might want to get their child's teacher a gift and this list is to help you select something the teacher would like. Please do not feel obligated to buy a gift for your child's teachers/staff members. A thoughtful note from you and/or your child at any time of the year is appreciated just as much or more as any gift.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Karen Davidson, PTO President, at ptoblacklick@gmail.com.
