Career and Technical Education Highlights
Career and Technical Education Highlights
Currently, we offer 8 Programs of Study at Henrietta ISD. Each month, we will be showcasing one of those programs. As part of her practicum, Kaitlyn Bryant will put together videos and flyers that explain these programs in more detail. You can find information about our programs of study on our CTE webpage.
The Teaching and Learning Program of Study will be spotlighted at the March school board meeting. Here is the flier about that program.
Safety Tips from Chief Nash
Just a reminder about Prom. I spoke at first priority and talking to Jr’s/Sr’s about not drinking and driving and distracted driving:
- Visual — taking your eyes off the road ( find a safe place to pull over before reaching for something down low or adjusting GPS/navigation, use a buddy system with a passenger, also have them paying attention)
- Manual — taking your hands off the wheel (hands free talking on cell/Bluetooth)
- Cognitive — taking your mind off what you are doing (don’t allow your mind to wonder, don’t space out while driving, take breaks on long drives)
Above all, don’t get in vehicle with anyone that has been drinking or in a car full of distracted people with radio blaring, everyone distracted on phones and being rowdy)
Technology Tips from Derek Leach
How to Avoid Text Messaging Scams
Allowing yourself a moment to evaluate suspicious text messages for signs of phishing when you get a text is a great way to protect yourself from text messaging scams.
Here are some added layers of protection against SMS phishing:
- Filtering. There are settings for both iPhones and Androids that allow you to toggle a spam protection option.
- For iPhone: go to Settings > select Messages > filter unknown senders.
- For Android: go to Messaging app > tap the upper right three dots > choose settings > select spam protection.
- Not replying. When you get a text that says “reply STOP”, DO NOT REPLY! When you reply to a smish, it confirms your phone number is valid. Phishers can then sell your number to other scammers.
- Reporting to your phone carrier. Copy and paste the body of the message to 7726 (S-P-A-M) so your phone carrier can investigate.
- Blocking. Blocking individual numbers is a good option to use if you frequently get spam from the same number. Unfortunately, many phishers use a different number each time, which could make this ineffective.
- Text-blocking apps. Apps like Robokiller help filter suspicious SMS messages, but they often aren’t free.
Main Types of Spam Texts
Promotional Spam
These are messages that are sent by marketers and businesses to advertise the sale of a product or service.
Phishing
Phishing is when the sender poses as a legitimate person or business. This type of text presents dangers because spammers often trick people into giving them personal data like passwords, bank information and even Social Security numbers.
Fake Prizes
These messages will claim that you’ve won a prize and usually contain malicious links.
Fraud
Be mindful when you receive a message that states your accounts are in jeopardy. Many times, senders trick people into providing personal information to falsely update their records.
Job Offers
In another ironic moment as security experts writing about text messaging scams, we just experienced a new one while drafting this article. We received a text with a poorly designed image with text of a job offer. We quickly figured this was spam due to the poor formatting and vague approach. After a few minutes of doing some more research, we discovered it was indeed spam. So, beware of this scam, and never reply unless you’re certain it’s authentic. Besides, it only takes a few minutes of Googling to be sure.
