This week we explored pets. We discussed pets in our family/friend's pets, supplies needed for pets and their homes. We enjoyed seeing all the pets our school community brought to school on Tuesday at Blessing of the Pets. Some of the activities we did this week were: pet sorting game, pet supplies chart, creating our pet fish, finishing a drawing of a dog and matching pets and their homes. A main goal in our PreK 3 classroom is exploration while learning.

Next Week we will be exploring community helpers. We will be learning about the different roles helpers have in our community. Some of the activities we will do are: community helpers tool sort, firefighter number puzzle, toothbrush painting, and fire safety line tracing. We are looking forward to a visit by the Alamo Heights Fire Department on Tuesday, Oct. 13th. We are excited to see their fire safety puppet show and explore their fire truck. On Tuesday, be on the look out for 2 flyers: Learn at Home: Community Helpers and Learn at Home: Fire Safety. They are filled with various activities to do with your child at home.

A BIG THANK YOU to ALL PK3 PARENTS for giving to SLES Annual Fund. Your generosity is greatly supported. Our PK3 will be having a FREE DRESS DAY on FRIDAY, OCT. 16TH. We also will be getting Italian Ice for dessert that day. Thanks again for making this day possible! You are awesome!

SLES Fall Fling will be on Friday, Oct. 23rd. This event is a fun-filled evening from 5:00-7:00pm with various activities and foods for you to enjoy with our fellow SLES families. Be on the look out for our Room Captains to be asking for help with our class booths. I am looking forward to seeing you there!

As cooler weather is coming to San Antonio, please remember to label all sweaters, sweatshirts and jackets with your child's name.

Remember your child's teacher is your first contact person if you have a question/concern. We are here to enhance your child's learning forming a wonderful partnership in learning. We are looking forward to a fantastic year!

Some of the math skills we will be working on next week are:

1.) counting/number recognition

2.) 1:1 correspondence (for example: 1 object to 1 space)

3.) comparisons

4) measuring with non-standard units

These skills we will be reinforced throughout the year.

At home, you can measure using common households objects such as spoons to measure the height of a pan or plate. You can count how many bandaids you have in your house. Your child get an animal or doll and you tell them how many bandaids to put on their animal or doll. Using common items for learning, it's easy and helps your child gain valuable skills.

Next week some of the language arts skills we will be working on are:

1.) increasing vocabulary

2.) discussing different community helpers or your job

3.) same and different

4.) listening skills

Read books about community helpers--talking their skills and tools used in their job. Read to your child each day to develop a love of reading and a beginning foundation for reading.
