Deerfield Elementary School

March 2023

DeerfieldElementary SchoolMarch 2023

Greetings from the Office!

It's hard to believe that we are already starting to plan for the 2023-24 school year. In order to best plan for the number of teachers and the number of sections, we would ask all eligible 4K/5K students to register. Listed below is the information.

That being said, we also need parent involvement with the PTO. We will be discussing upcoming budgets and need parents to attend the meetings and give input. The meeting is tonight and it is virtual-I would love to see more parents get involved!

Regular attendance at school is a key component to keeping your child on track. According to district policy and state law, each student is allowed to miss all or part of 10 days per school year as long as the absence is verified by a written excuse. Being late or missing school has a negative impact on your child’s potential to learn. It is a well-documented statistic that the greater a student’s attendance rate, the greater likelihood of success in school. Please reach out to me if you have questions about your child's attendance record.

Hopefully spring weather is on its way. Please continue to send winter gear, (especially boots) as the playground can be snowy and muddy all in one day!

Please don't hesitate to contact the DES office at 764-5442 from 7:30-3:30 with any questions you may have or email me kamrathm@deerfield.k12.wi.us.

Here is what is happening in 5th grade!

Fifth grade has been working hard on many great things this year. Students have been working on solving operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals all year, and recently students have been doing an awesome job conquering long division with whole numbers and decimals. We are wrapping up our mystery unit in reading. We studied elements of mystery novels while reading The Kidnappers by Wilo Davis Roberts. The main character, Joey, witnesses a kidnapping, but nobody believes him because he has a history of "stretching the truth." To wrap up the mystery unit, students are working on writing their own mystery story, integrating the mystery elements they have learned about in the books they have read. In social studies, students are learning about the American Colonies, and how tension grew between the Colonists and Great Britain. They are also learning about the slave trade and the enslavement of West Africans in the Americas. In science, the classes are learning about the water cycle and chemical reactions. In April, we are looking forward to visiting the Hoard Museum and Milton House, an Underground Railroad stop in Wisconsin, and in May we will be returning to Aldo Leopold Nature Center to observe how ecosystems change in spring.

Spring Shoe Box for Kids @ River Food Pantry

Dear 3rd and 4th Grade Families,

Spring is just around the corner, which means that it is the time of year for extra sharing and caring! Typically during the spring season, 3rd and 4th graders partner with River Food Pantry in Madison and do a service project called Shoe Boxes for Kids. River Food Pantry identified a need for spring and summer outdoor activity items that will benefit families who are currently experiencing financial difficulties. Below is a list of needed items that can be dropped off at the front entrances of DES, or sent to school with your child to give to their homeroom teacher. The collection will run from February 27-March 17. Thank you to everyone who is able to donate!

If you are interested in learning more about River Food Pantry on the north side of Madison you can visit their website (http://www.riverfoodpantry.org/).

Listed below are the needed items that can be donated:

-bubbles

-crayons

-small coloring books

-small puzzles

-sidewalk chalk

-other outdoor items

-candy

We encourage you to be creative and find fun ways to have your child help around the house and do extra chores to earn a little money that they can contribute to buying these items. Thank you for helping us make a difference!

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!

Looking forward to warmer outdoor weather!
