Jefferson Fall Festival and Movie Night

Thomas Jefferson's annual PTO Fall Festival and Movie Night was a wonderful way to bring our school community together and kick off the new school year! Families enjoyed an evening filled with fun games, contests, and activities, including the highly anticipated 5th Grade Pie Eating Contest vs. Dr. Droske, won this year by Illyriana Ortiz! The evening wrapped up with a movie under the stars on the school lawn, where students voted to watch Sonic 3. A big thank you to our amazing PTO and all the volunteers who made this special event possible!

Meet Our Roughrider Rookies & Role Models!

We are so excited to introduce Roughrider Rookies & Role Models, a special buddy program bringing our youngest and oldest Roughriders together throughout the school year!

Our Rookies and Role Models had the opportunity to meet one another, get to know each other, and learn more about their new buddy. We are looking forward to watching these special relationships grow throughout the year and seeing our 5th graders shine as positive Role Models for our youngest Roughriders! We can’t wait to see all the memories they create together!

Making Music in Music Technology

This year, all 8th grade students at Lincoln Middle School are taking Music Technology as part of their course schedule, giving every student the opportunity to explore music through creativity, technology, and hands-on learning.

During their first week of piano, students jumped right in! They learned how to read the musical staff, practice proper hand placement, and play a few fun songs. It was an exciting first step as students began building their musical skills and confidence.

We can’t wait to see what our 8th graders learn, create, and play throughout the year!

From LEGO Towers to Literary Analysis

What can a pair of oven mitts teach you about literature? In Mrs. Cohn’s 8th grade ELA classes, students found out!

As an introduction to their first short story, “Harrison Bergeron,” students participated in a hands-on LEGO tower challenge designed to help them experience the frustration of working under limitations. Working in groups, students were challenged to build the tallest tower possible—but there was a catch: whenever they wanted to add height to their tower, they had to wear oven mitts! This activity gave students a concrete way to experience how restrictions can affect our ability to accomplish a goal and connected directly to the limitations placed on Harrison in the story.

Students then read and annotated “Harrison Bergeron,” focusing on important details, characterization, and theme. They put their comprehension and analytical skills to the test during an Escape Room challenge, working together to solve a series of puzzles and challenges based on the story.

The learning will continue as students later revisit “Harrison Bergeron” alongside Flowers for Algernon, comparing how both texts explore intelligence, equality, individuality, and society’s attempts to control or limit individuals.

Learning In Action at HHS!

It has been a busy few weeks at Hawthorne High School, and our students continue to show us what it means to be Balanced, Empowered, Active, Resilient, and Skilled. From getting involved in clubs and activities to taking learning beyond the traditional classroom, our students are embracing opportunities to explore, create, collaborate, and lead.

Finding Their Place at HHS

Students filled the courtyard for another successful Club Fair, exploring the many clubs and activities available at HHS. Students had the opportunity to meet club members and advisors, learn about new opportunities, and find meaningful ways to get involved and connect with the school community. With so many options available, there is truly something for everyone at HHS!

Students Become the Teachers

Our Italian students recently stepped into the spotlight during Mrs. Habib’s annual Professore per un Giorno (Teacher for a Day) showcase. Students in Italian 2 through Italian 4 Honors designed interactive lessons and activities to review key language concepts from previous years. The classroom became an interactive gallery walk as students rotated through peer-led stations, practicing vocabulary and grammar along the way. This year, staff members were also invited to participate and experience a mini-lesson themselves. It was a wonderful example of students taking ownership of their learning and sharing their knowledge with others.

Exploring Careers Through Hands-On Learning

Students in Mr. Miller’s Exploration of Careers in the Trades class got hands-on experience learning how to install and repair Sheetrock. Experiences like this provide students with an opportunity to explore the construction trades while developing practical, real-world skills that can extend well beyond the classroom.

Science You Can See and Touch

In Mr. Zaolino’s AP Biology class, students explored the chemistry of life by modeling how hydrogen and oxygen atoms bond to form water. Using models to identify how atoms combine and where chemical bonds form, students were able to visualize molecular structures while making connections between microscopic chemical processes and the properties of water that are essential to life.

Meanwhile, Mr. Miller’s STEM students are tackling a Water Filter Challenge that brings concepts from Biology and Environmental Science into their engineering work. Working in flexible teams, students are designing and building water filters while making decisions about which materials to “purchase” using their STEM points. Next week, they will put their prototypes to the test by examining pH and turbidity levels to determine how effective their designs are.

From tower building and paper airplanes to water filtration, students are developing a valuable habit: How can I solve this problem without immediately turning to Google or my phone? Through experimentation, collaboration, and problem-solving, students are learning to embrace the process of figuring things out. Ultimately, they will identify a real-world problem, design and build a prototype solution, and present and “sell” their invention to the class.

Physics in Motion

And sometimes, the best classroom is the great outdoors! Mr. Lin’s Physics students took their learning outside for a hands-on Stomp Rocket Lab. Students applied concepts of force, motion, and projectile motion as they designed, launched, and tested their rockets. It was a fun and engaging way to turn physics concepts into something students could see, experience, and measure firsthand.

From leading lessons and exploring careers to building prototypes and launching rockets, our students are learning by doing. These experiences reflect the many ways our teachers create opportunities for students to think critically, collaborate, take risks, and apply what they learn to the real world.

Todd Kenny

Lincoln Middle School | ELA Teacher

Mr. Todd Kenny is truly a fan favorite at Lincoln Middle School! This year, LMS is proud to celebrate Mr. Kenny’s 28 years of dedication to teaching and to our school community.

After 28 years in education, Mr. Kenny’s passion for teaching remains as strong as ever. When asked what keeps him inspired, he shared, “After 28 years of teaching, I still have a passion for teaching and love coming to work each day. I am proud of all the true and positive connections I have made throughout my career with students and colleagues.”

This year, Mr. Kenny is taking that passion for connection and encouragement one step further by launching and leading a new club at LMS—the Rise Above Club. The club will focus on perseverance, never giving up, overcoming challenges, and striving to become the best version of oneself. The idea for the club grew from the daily Wisdom Quotes Mr. Kenny began incorporating into his classroom last year, providing students with positive messages and opportunities for reflection.

Mr. Kenny is committed to making every interaction with students and colleagues a positive one. His goal is simple yet powerful: to help students and staff feel better about themselves, recognize their potential, and remember that they can always Rise Above the challenges they face.

LMS is incredibly fortunate to have a teacher who is not only dedicated to his craft, but also an inspiring educator, positive role model, and supportive colleague. Thank you, Mr. Kenny, for 28 years of making a difference and for continuing to make every moment count at LMS!
