Superintendent's Update

Dear Families,

Social Services to Families

During this difficult time, we know that many households are faced with a variety of challenges. Residents in Mansfield are fortunate to have a Social Services Department available to provide assistance. This department, staffed by a licensed social worker, supports residents with a variety of services to address both short term crisis and ongoing needs. All services are offered free of charge. Some of their resources include the following:

  • assistance in applying for SNAP (food assistance)
  • utility and energy bill assistance
  • short-term rent/mortgage assistance following a crisis
  • help finding doctors or mental health providers
  • referral to job, career and mentoring

I encourage you to view the link below and contact the department directly with any questions.

Technology Planning

You might recall that a team had developed a comprehensive three-year Digital Learning and Technology Integration Plan (2018-2021). Covid expedited the three-years once we distributed ChromeBooks for at-home use by students. Not knowing fully what the future holds, we need to be ready to teach and learn remotely at any time. To that end, we are preparing for a 1:1 device environment in grades 3 through 12. J/J students will be assigned a ChromeBook that they can use when appropriate during the school day. Most days they will leave it in school; however, in the event of remote learning, the device will go home with students. QMS and MHS will be fully 1:1; that means the students will carry them throughout the day and will take them home daily. For our youngest students at Robinson and Roland Green, we will have enough ChromeBooks for any family who requests one during times of remote learning as we did last spring.

Survey Results

As a reminder, the Fall 2020 Planning Survey that was sent last Thursday, closes Wednesday, July 22. I had been reluctant to send home one of these surveys because if I were a parent I wouldn't be able to respond until I knew all of the details. But, the responses were helpful to us. To date, over 3,100 responses have been received indicating that over 68% of families plan on sending students back to school for in-person learning. If you have not already responded, I encourage you to take a few minutes to complete the 2-question survey. A link has been provided below. We will continue to enlist your feedback through additional, more comprehensive surveys over the next few weeks. Thank you for your continued involvement as we navigate the path to reopening our schools.

Sincerely,

Teresa Murphy
