Recognition of the TRAILS Job Olympics (2.1)

The June 2026 Board of Education meeting began with recognizing students involved in the Job Olympics, a regional transition and employability competition for students receiving special education services. Staff from the high school and TRAILS program described the months of preparation that went into helping students practice workplace skills, interview techniques, and job-specific tasks. Their efforts resulted in an impressive showing, including 14 medals and a third-place team finish!

Recognition of GEHS Spring Activity Achievements (2.2)

The board then celebrated a highly successful spring athletic season at Gardner Edgerton High School. Administrators highlighted accomplishments across soccer, tennis, golf, baseball, track and field, and softball. Golf produced three state qualifiers, the most the school has sent in nearly a decade. Baseball advanced to the state quarterfinals after key victories over rival programs. Track and field continued its tradition of excellence, earning nine state medals, two individual state champions, and 33 state qualifiers. The board had the opportunity to then celebrate the state champion softball team. Administrators praised the athletes and coaching staff for their commitment, leadership, and team-first mentality.

The fine arts and student activity achievements were then highlighted. High school music groups earned straight “1” ratings at the state large-group music festival, while additional students received top ratings in individual and small-group competitions. The theater department was recognized for its production of Freaky Friday and a Blue Star Award nomination for Shrek. Senior artist Kinsey Savage, whose artistic contributions have become highly visible throughout the high school was praised for her murals, artwork in the school commons, contributions to district projects, and leadership in creating the district’s first art competition.

He also highlighted the extensive bond-funded construction and improvement projects taking place throughout the district, including playground replacements, facility expansions, service center construction, and renovations at multiple campuses.

District 3, Position 6 Board Vacancy Discussion (9.1)

Board members discussed the best way to proceed with the board vacancy after one candidate was unable to attend the initial interview process. Board members agreed not to reopen the application process to new candidates but expressed a desire to conduct a second round of interviews with the existing finalists. The discussion centered on improving the interview process by developing more focused and less repetitive questions, while also ensuring fairness to the candidate who had missed the earlier interviews. Ultimately, the board approved a motion to continue the process at the August 10, 2026 meeting and bring all four candidates back for additional interviews.

May 2026 Building Needs Assessment

The board then discussed the district’s annual Building Needs Assessment, a required component of the budgeting process. Administrators explained that the document remained in draft form and would continue to be refined through finance committee discussions and future budget work before final adoption.
