WMS LEADERSHIP TEAM
Assistant Principal ~ Rachel Langberg
Happy Weekend, Y’all!
Welcome to the 2nd quarter! If you haven’t created habits for the school year yet, now is a great time to reset. I recently read that a person should, “Make bad habits harder to do by adding friction, and make good habits easier to do by removing friction so success is the path of least resistance.” If you’ve got some tips and tricks for the rest of us to create habits and environments more aligned to the experiences we want, please share them!
Here are a couple of things to consider:
Do you have a routine for your student before and after school? (Think: Did they get enough sleep and the right type of energy from food? Is their computer charged? Are there documents that need to be reviewed or signed? Are there clubs or activities in which they may be wanting to stay after school to do? When/where will they do assignments?)
Do you know what’s being taught? (Think: When and how often do I access Schoology or PowerSchool? Are there newsletters I haven’t read? Have I asked them about how they are living out our CARE values? Do I challenge them to practice the Character Dare?)
Do you feel connected and in communication with the school? (Think: Do I know how to contact people who work with my student(s)? Do I need to inform the teacher about questions, comments, and/or concerns I have? Do I have time and talents that I can volunteer?)
If you would like to learn more about routines, content, and/or connection, please don’t hesitate to reach out! You can start with your student’s teachers, counselors, or grade level administrators…We’re all happy to help. Annnnd, if you haven’t already, make sure you sign up for conferences. If you’re unable to make an appointment (or your preferred time is already taken), please email teachers directly. While conference dates/times are already set, we still want to schedule time to partner with you and discuss your student’s learning experience.
Wish you well,
Rachel Langberg
60 Years of WMS
This year marks an exciting milestone as we celebrate West Middle School's 60th Anniversary, and we invite our entire community to join us on Thursday, November 19, beginning at 2:45 p.m.
The afternoon will feature light refreshments, student-led tours, a meet-and-greet with current members of the West community, and a memory wall where guests can share stories, photos, and favorite memories from throughout the years. The celebration will conclude with a fun and spirited Student vs. Staff Basketball Game, where everyone is encouraged to cheer on the participants!
Whether you are a former student, staff member, family member, or community partner, we would love to reconnect, celebrate our shared history, and honor the generations of Wildcats who have made West such a special place.
Know someone connected to West? Please help us spread the word by sharing this information and inviting former students, staff, families, neighbors, and friends to join the celebration.
We look forward to celebrating our rich history, reconnecting with familiar faces, and creating new memories together as we honor 60 years of excellence at West Middle School! 🐾💙💛

BEYOND THE BELL 🛎️
New This Year: Bringing the Conversation Home
Throughout the year, we’ll use this space to share resources, topics, and conversation starters connected to the building supports, SEL, character development, and real-world experiences our Wildcats are navigating. Our hope is simple: to give families another way to stay connected, build awareness, and create opportunities for meaningful conversations at home.
As we begin the second quarter, take a moment to check in with your Wildcat about their experiences, successes, and goals for the months ahead.
Three questions to spark conversation:
Celebrate: What are you most proud of from the first quarter?
Reflect: What has been challenging, and what questions could you ask or support could you seek?
Refocus: What is one goal you have for the rest of the year, and how will you work toward it?
This is also a great time to review notebooks, reorganize backpacks, check Schoology grades and assignments, and look over WAGs (Weekly Assignment Guides).
Together, we can help our Wildcats build confidence, take ownership of their learning, and continue growing throughout the year!
VETERANS DAY
CONFERENCES
We invite you to schedule an in person conference on Thursday, November 5th (4:45-8:00) or in-person (9:30-12:00) or virtual conference (12:30-2:45) on Friday, November 6th. Conferences will look differently this round, so please read through the changes:
Parents/Guardians will be able to sign up for 10 minute time slots for their child’s teacher. We ask that you prioritize 1-2 teachers to conference with and sign up for those time slots.
If you already had the opportunity to meet with teachers during our September conferences, we kindly ask that you allow other families the chance to schedule this time. There are not enough time slots for every student each round of conferences. If you did not get a time slot and you have questions or concerns, please reach out directly to your student’s teacher(s).
If you miss your scheduled time slot, please note that we won’t be able to reschedule, as our staff have full calendars.
We will host our Spring Conferences on the following days:
January 28th 4:45pm - 8:00pm
March 2nd 4:45pm - 8:00pm
March 4th 9:00am - 4:00pm
Please use the links below to sign up for conferences:
If you have any questions, feel free to email your child's teacher or Ann Flanagan, Campus Administrator, at aflanagan@cherrycreekschools.org

COUNSELING
CLINIC
Cold and Flu Season
The Best way to reduce you and your student's risk from seasonal flu and potential serious complications is to get a flu vaccine every year.
- Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine every season, especially people at higher risk.
Flu vaccines help to reduce the burden of flu illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths on the health care system each year.
- Flu vaccination also has been shown to reduce the severity of illness in people who get vaccinated but still get sick.
- Everyone 6 months and older should get an annual flu vaccine, ideally by the end of October but people should continue to get vaccinated as long as flu viruses pose a threat to their community.
- Vaccination of people at higher risk of developing serious flu complications is especially important to decrease their risk of severe flu illness.
- People at higher risk of serious flu complications include young children, pregnant women, people with certain chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease, and people 65 years and older.
- Vaccination also is important for health care workers and other people who live with or care for people at higher risk of serious flu illness to keep from spreading flu to them. This is especially true for people who work in long-term care facilities, which are home to many of the people most vulnerable to flu.
Children younger than 6 months are at higher risk of serious flu illness but are too young to be vaccinated. People who care for infants should be vaccinated instead.
Cherry Creek School District Vaccine resources can be found at this link https://www.cherrycreekschools.org/programs-and-services/office-of-student-health/office-of-student-health/wellness/vaccine-clinics
Take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs.
Take actions every day to help stop the spread of germs.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
If you are sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them. For flu, CDC recommends that people stay home, for at least 24 hours, until both are true: your symptoms are getting better overall, and you have not had fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication).
- Cover coughs and sneezes.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wearing a mask is an additional prevention strategy that you can choose to further protect yourself and others. When worn by a person with an infection, masks reduce the spread of the virus to others. Masks can also protect wearers from breathing infectious particles from people around them.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs spread this way.
You can improve air quality by bringing in fresh outside air, purifying indoor air, or gathering outdoors. Cleaner air can reduce the risk of exposure to viruses.
Cleaning frequently touched surfaces, such as countertops, handrails, and doorknobs regularly can help prevent the spread of some illnesses. Also, get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
