What we learned last week?
In math students continued to explore multiplication. The focus was on finding the area of rectangles using multiplication and the distributive property. Below is a video to show you how the distributive property works! Student learned to answer questions in connection to information given by a graph.
Reading:
Students used a new text, Shark Attack, to practice the following reading and writing skills...
- Students completed a graphic organizer, identifying key details and the main idea of a text.
- Students also participated in a Whip Around activity in which students explain how facts, details, and definitions develop a main idea.
- This lesson encouraged students to notice and use text features. The Text Feature Hunt at the end of the lesson assesses how well students use text features to locate information efficiently.
- Students contributed to the model paragraph the class develops collaboratively.
- New Read Assessment 1 asked students to use text features to demonstrate an understanding of the text.
- Students also wrote a paragraph about Shark Attack, focusing on developing a topic statement.
Students continued to explore and learn about animal adaptations.
Homework
3rd grade does assign homework every week, except on breaks.
Homework is assigned on Mondays and due on Fridays.
Math- Daily Spiral Review
Reading- Read every day for at least 10 minutes and fill out reading log.
What will we be learning next week?
Math
This week we will review topics covered in Quarter 1 to prepare for the District Amp test that will be given on October 16th-17th.
- Place Value
- Addition and Subtraction with Regrouping
- Multiplication (Including Properties)
- Area
- Data and Graphs
Reading/Writing
Using the text, Shark Attack, students will complete the following reading and language arts skills...
- Students engage in a Socratic Seminar to discuss the dangers and benefits of studying sharks.
- Students also identify the essential meaning of the text in a summary.
Students will also be introduced to a new text, Giant Squid. In this text, students will be able to ask and answer questions about text features and also identify linking words in the text.
Science
In science we will continue to explore animal adaptations. Encourage your child to talk about animals they see in their neighborhood! Talk about what features the animals have that help them survive in their environment. Your child can even draw a picture and journal what they observe!
ESOL
Parents,
These are ideas of activities you can do at home with your child to help them learn English. Here is the link!
EIP
We have been working on the distributive property of multiplication in math in 3rd grade. Below is a video families can use to help with that understanding.
Reading Specialist Advice
Weโre educators who focus on helping students improve their literacy skills(phonics, fluency, reading comprehension, etc). We provide specialized instruction to support students individually and/or small groups. At the beginning of the school year, we evaluate/assess students to identify the needs and collaborate with teachers to determine how to best help students.
Reading Tips
IRR
Students should practice skip counting to help them with multiplication!
Here are some activities you can try at home to practice skip counting:
- Hopscotch: Use sidewalk chalk to mark out a grid and play hopscotch.
Read skip counting books: Picture books with activities and problems can help students enjoy skip counting more.
- Make skip counting art: Combine grouping with pointillism, the technique of making art from tiny dots, using cotton swabs and poster paint.
- Building blocks: Ask your child to skip count to a number by making towers with building blocks. For example, to skip count to 15 by 3, they could make five towers with three building blocks in each.
Counseling
Not only are we here to help your child in their academics, but we are also her to help them navigate their social-emotional learning journey!
Feel free to check out the Counseling Corner, it has many helpful tips!

Additional Information
Transportation
If there is a change in transportation arrangements, we require notice from the parent before allowing students to be transported by anyone other than a parent. You may send in a note with your child or email parkstreet@marietta-city.org with the details of the change. We do not allow students to walk or to ride home with unauthorized people. If you must make a change during the day, notify the school office staff before 2:30 p.m.
Pick-up by Car in the Afternoon
Anyone picking up a child must have his/her Panther Car Tag. If you do not have a Panther Car Tag, you may get one by coming to the front office.
Tardy Drop-Off
When a student arrives late (after 8:30), an adult must sign the student in at the office.
Early Pick-Up
Please limit early pick-up of children to emergencies and appointments. If a child is out for any portion of the school day, the missed time is recorded as a tardy. A note sent in the morning will help us to have your child ready. To avoid interruptions to instruction, no student will be released between 2:45 and 3:15. Parents will be asked to wait for the dismissal bell. Come to the office to check out a student. Please be prepared to present photo identification upon request. No student will be released to an unknown or unauthorized person.
Late Pick-Up
Students waiting to be picked up will be supervised until 3:30. After 3:30 they may be sent to the After School Program if they are pre-registered ($10 fee). Regular after school charges will apply. Many parents sign up for the program so their children can attend in case of emergency.
