Message from Nicole Pease, Principal

Hello everyone, it has been a another wonderful week at DCS! After a chopped up week last week, it was lovely to have a full week of school. Staff worked with the students to plan and prepare for our Thankful Soup lunch today. It was so special to have so many families join us for a soup lunch! We ended our week with our monthly whole school assembly where we expressed our thankfulness for Mr. Russell for his hard work and continued efforts to make us smile with his jokes! We hope you have a restful weekend and a special Thanksgiving, Nicole

Feeling in First Grade and Kindergarten

There has been a whirlwind of activity with the Thanksgiving holiday approaching! Our class loved chopping vegetables in preparation for the Souper Lunch on Friday. It was also fun to get together with our third grade friends for a turkey centerpiece craft that will decorate tables as we feast on soup. The most exciting news, however, is that we welcomed our new friend Nadia to our class!

Succeeding in Second Grade

Second graders were so fortunate to have two wonderful Veterans Day speakers come to our class. Mr. John Wood spoke about the character traits like courage, faithfulness, and others he learned while in the Marines and how we can work to develop those same traits in second grade! He shared the many different countries he visited and the students had fun locating each one on the map. Mr. Russell spoke about his time in both the Army and Navy. He developed some wonderful friendships that helped him when he was so far away from his family. The students practiced shaking his hand and saying, “Thank you for your service.” We are so thankful for these two and so many others who have sacrificed to serve our country! The students really enjoyed reading The Rough Face Girl by Rafe Martin. We enjoyed reading this fictional story about Native Americans very similar to the story, Cinderella. We used a Venn Diagram to help us see the similarities and differences between the two. We also have been learning about text features in non-fiction books. We used that information to help us understand the book, The Mayflower. In Math, we've been studying place value and made place-value turkeys for Thanksgiving. We've also started using Xtra math, an online site to help us learn our math facts fluently. The students are already improving daily!

Thinking in Third Grade

We continue to be thankful for our terrific third graders for all their positive energy and joy of learning. For Social/Emotional Learning, the children practiced thinking about what Zones they were in before going on a field trip and how they could regulate themselves in a new space. The children explored the regulating tools available in the classroom to determine which would help them best for each Zone.

A Highlight for Language Arts and Social Studies combined was the children developed questions, went on a field trip to the Historical Society, and interviewed Mrs. Knapp and Mrs. Snitko. Then, they went through the Writing Progress to create Informative Writings on Schoolhouse #1 and the Dublin town government.

For Math, - The children thought about which unit of square units to measure specific areas, such as square meters versus square inches or feet. Then, the focus moved to finding the Area of a rectangle without a grid and ways to measure a rectangle. The children were excited to discover and create a multiplication table, thinking about how to read and build it.

Lastly, with the Science Unit on Heredity, Survival, and Selection, the children enjoyed learning with Mystery Science lessons with the essential questions - What types of animals might there be in the future? And can selection happen without people?

Focusing in Fourth and Fifth

Busy days! We have continued our Abenacki study and our Thanksgiving themed reading writing. This has helped up focus on seeking more ways to express thankfulness to others.

The students filled the gem jar and voted for a stuffed animal day. It was fun to see the share and used them as inspiration for math and social activities.

I challenged them to bring in at least 26 items for the food drive. Each day we counted the items and the determination the percentage ofnthe way they were to reaching their goal. Today we hit 123%! Thank you for your generosity!

Happy Thanksgiving from the 4th and 5th grades!

Music At DCS

K/1 learned about different instrument sounds and using different voices. We read "Polar Bear Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?" and used instruments to mimic the animal sounds!

2nd Grade studied musical contour and learned about reading and creating music shapes. They connected this information to instrument size and pitch.

3rd Grade practiced reading eighth notes and quarter notes using lots of different instruments and songs. Ask your 3rd grader to sing you the "Turkey in the Straw" song!

Grades 4 and 5 studied and composed rhythms. They had fun learning the "Turkey in the Straw" and playing it on boomwhackers!

Information for you about a new State Law

Recently, the New Hampshire legislature passed a law, Screening and Intervention for Dyslexia and Related Disorders (RSA 200:59). This law went into effect on September 26, 2023, and it requires us to screen all kindergarten through third grade students for the identification of potential indicators or risk factors of dyslexia and related disorders. Please know, the assessments we are asked to conduct are not tools to diagnose Dyslexia. Rather, they are screening tools meant to identify students who may be at risk and allow us to intervene with systematic and structured literacy interventions to help these students succeed.

As part of the beginning of the school year, students in grades K-3 in the Conval School District were administered grade-specific universal screening assessments by AIMSwebPlus. These assessments are designed to predict whether or not your student might struggle while learning how to read. By conducting these assessments, we ensure we are identifying and supporting students appropriately throughout the school year together. The District has been using AIMSweb assessments for many years, and these assessments meet the requirements of RSA 200:59.

If this applies you your student, a letter will be going home with your student on November 21, 2023
