The LMS ExpressMarch 22, 2025

Hello all,

This week was shortened by our Parent-Guardian/Teacher Conferences. It's always nice to have a few moments to speak about our students and how we can all best support them. Oftentimes, the March conference discussion focus at least partially on transitioning to next year and what that will look like. Although there is still a lot of teaching and learning left to do this year, we're all beginning to look ahead to the coming academic year. It's an exciting (and for some, nervous) time. The teachers and staff here at LMS are focused on supporting the students in their journey, and we celebrate these transitions as important milestones!

Thanks for having a look at this issue of the LMS Express!

Be Well,

Tom

LMS Student Council-sponsored Food Drive for Listen Center Food Shelf LMS Student Council-sponsored Food Drive for Listen Center Food Shelf

Hello families,

The student council is putting on a food drive in the month of April. This will be regulated by teams and each of the 3 weeks will be themed. The first week in April will be breakfast foods. The second week will be lunch foods and the third will be dinner foods. We ask that you provide shelf stable food and have your child put the item in to their team box. This is not mandatory but by donation. This will be a friendly competition to see which team can raise the most shelf stable food. The winners will receive a prize at the end of the month. Food donations are for the LMS food pantry. Reach out to the student council with any questions or concerns!

Sixth grade students have selected local non-profit organizations to research as part of a Language Arts project. Representatives from Special Needs Support Center, SHARe, Good Beginnings, Community Nurse Connection, and Upper Valley Trails Alliance made time to support this project by coming into Lebanon Middle School to be interviewed by groups of students interested in their mission. Other organizations including Spark! Community Center, Tomten Farm and Sanctuary, and Cover Home Repair participated in virtual interviews with students. Additionally, representatives from Listen Community Center, Twin Pines Housing, Upper Valley Humane Society, Hero Pups, Willing Hands, Upper Valley Land Trust, TLC Family Resource Center, Sharing Housing, and David's House corresponded with students to answer questions and provide feedback via email. Our sixth grade students are so grateful for the connections they have made with these community helpers! Stay tuned for continued updates on this project in upcoming newsletters!

Book Club Spotlight: The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt Book Club Spotlight: The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt

In the last newsletter, we recommended the book The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. Families may find this book useful as they navigate decisions regarding technology. Whether or not you choose to read the book, we would like to support those that wish to learn more about the implications of raising children in a phone-based world. Today we want to highlight two resources:

Ted Talk: iGen The Smartphone Generation Dr. Jean Twenge, author of iGen, explains how the generation growing up with smartphones are different from other generations and how to address the addictive nature of smartphones. Less than 8 minutes.

Are You Struggling with Your Own Screen Time? This article by Catherine Price has 5 steps for adults to address their own phone use. Approximately 3,200 words.

Many additional resources are available at anxiousgeneration.com and look for more in future newsletters.

Pine Team News Pine Team News

Pine Team students had a virtual author visit on Friday, March 14, with Stuart Gibbs. Mr. Gibbs has written many books, and students in grade 5 recently read Space Case. Students had many questions about Space Case, how he comes up with his ideas and decides on characters. They also wondered what it's like to be an author and how many hours a day he spends writing. Gibbs also told them about all of his other series, several of which are very popular here at LMS.
