Dear West Ada Families,

It’s hard to believe we are just over a month away from the end of the school year. Our classrooms are as busy as ever with end-of-year projects, field trips, and preparations for one of the largest graduating classes in West Ada history. We are incredibly proud of our students and their hard work as they prepare to move up or earn their diplomas.

This week, we celebrated Administrative Professionals Day. This gives us all the opportunity to take a moment and recognize the incredible individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our schools and district running smoothly. Their contributions are essential, and we are grateful for the professionalism, organization, and care they bring to their work every day.

I recently had the opportunity to visit with the Mountain View High School Student Council and was impressed by their focus on building a strong, supportive school culture. They are actively preparing for events like Mavs Got Talent and finding meaningful ways to celebrate and support their seniors as they approach graduation. Students also shared thoughtful feedback on topics like attendance policies and classroom technology, demonstrating their commitment to continuously improving their school experience.

I also had the opportunity to attend the regional Idaho Battle of the Books (IBOB) middle school competition this past week. It was great to see students excited about reading as they competed in a book trivia-style competition. Congratulations to the Heritage Middle School team for winning the competition—an impressive accomplishment that reflects both their preparation and passion for reading.

We will be recommending four new principals at the Board of Trustees meeting on Monday. These leaders are focused on educational excellence and building strong communities in their schools. We are excited to see how they will lead Eagle Hills Elementary, Frontier Elementary, Mountain View High School, and Seven Oaks Elementary.

This time of year also gives us an opportunity to celebrate the incredible staff who have dedicated their careers to West Ada. At our recent retiree celebration, we honored approximately 60 retirees, many of whom have spent decades serving our students and community. We also recognized 153 staff members reaching milestone years of service—some up to 35 years. These milestones reflect not only individual dedication, but also the strength of West Ada as a place where people choose to build long and meaningful careers.

As we head into the final stretch of the school year, thank you for your continued support of our schools. Together, we are preparing students not just for their next step, but for a successful future in both college and career pathways.

With gratitude,
Dr. Derek Bub
Superintendent
West Ada School District

Idaho Battle of the Books is a statewide reading competition in which teams from elementary, middle, and high schools read books and then compete against teams from other schools to show what they know about each set of books.

This year, our high school teams swept the Region Three IBoB Conference. Centennial High School teams Wild Writers and Till-a-Book battled for first and second place, respectively. Meridian High School’s team, Pickles, captured third place.

Author Jennifer Yu spoke at the HS IBoB Tournament, sharing her insights about reading and writing. Her book Grief in the Fourth Dimension was one of 12 titles students read to prepare for battle.

Heritage Middle School winning team with best-selling author, John Schu: (L to R) Dax Fails, Sam Brown, Paul Green, Amy Armstrong, Summer Graham, John Schu, Raquel Brewer and Joshua Rabe.

Heritage Middle School’s IBoB team, Books for Breakfast, won the middle school IBoB Region 3 Tournament, earning a trophy and personalized, signed books from visiting author John Schu.

Schu delighted students with a discussion about the importance of joy in life, and how libraries positively impact the world. Schu wrote Louder than Hunger, one of the 12 titles students read in preparation for the MS IBoB competition.

Hillsdale Elementary will host the Elementary IBoB Region 3 Tournament on May 2. Good luck to the Elementary IBoBbers, and congratulations to our middle school and high school IBoB winners! We are proud of you!

April is National Library Month April is National Library Month

April is National Library Month—a time to celebrate the essential role school libraries and school librarians play in our lives and communities. School libraries are more than books; they are welcoming spaces for learning, curiosity, creativity, and connection. They ensure access to information for all, support lifelong learning, and serve as engaging learning and social hubs for students and staff.

We especially want to recognize our West Ada school librarians, who open doors to discovery every day. Through their expertise, guidance, and passion, they nurture a love of reading, teach critical research and thinking skills, and empower students to become thoughtful, informed citizens and life-long readers. Thank you, school librarians, for your dedication and celebrate libraries as essential cornerstones of education!
