Referendum Referendum

Speaking at the referendum open house Oct. 8 at Sunnyside Elementary School, Superintendent Bob Jaszczak explained how the district will put bond and levy funds to work if voters approve them Nov. 3.

Have referendum questions? Hop online Have referendum questions? Hop online

Residents may visit the district’s dedicated referendum website at bit.ly/rwps-ref26 to learn about the referendum. The website serves as a central resource for information, including:

  • Details about the ballot question and proposed improvements

  • Frequently asked questions

  • Tax impact information and an online tax calculator

  • Voting information and important dates

On Nov. 3, voters will consider one ballot question with two funding tools: a $12.86 million building bond for improvements at Sunnyside Elementary and a 10-year capital projects levy to support ongoing investments in curriculum, facilities, technology and other capital needs. The proposal is estimated to have a tax impact of approximately $9 per month on the average value home in the district.

While many of the conversations surrounding the referendum naturally focus on today’s needs and costs, the district’s planning has also looked further ahead. The proposal is intended to strengthen learning opportunities, make thoughtful use of district facilities and resources, and consider how Red Wing Schools can best serve students and families five, ten, and fifteen years from now.

Or invite the superintendent to your meeting Or invite the superintendent to your meeting

Local community, civic, and service organizations interested in learning more about the referendum are invited to request a presentation from Superintendent Bob Jaszczak.

The superintendent is available to attend upcoming meetings to provide an overview of the ballot question, answer questions, and share factual information about the proposal. Groups interested in scheduling a presentation may contact the district at 651-385-4502 or bjaszczak@rwps.org.

A detailed referendum mailer will be arriving in district households in mid-October. The mailer provides detailed information about the proposal.

Red Wing Public Schools encourages residents to use these resources and opportunities to learn about the proposal and ask questions before voting on or before Nov. 3.

LOCKDOWN! Lock doors, lights out. LOCKDOWN! Lock doors, lights out.

Graphic of the Standard Response Protocol LOCKDOWN image.
zoom_out_map
Safety is our top priority, and this week we are reviewing the LOCKDOWN protocol. A LOCKDOWN is called only when an active threat or hazard is inside or immediately approaching the building. During a LOCKDOWN, classroom doors are locked, lights are turned off, and everyone moves out of sight away from doors and windows, and prepares for a potential ALICE announcement. Silence is maintained until first responders or school administrators open the door.

In an active LOCKDOWN, our primary focus is securing students and staff immediately. Official emergency alerts (via text, phone, and email) will be broadcast to parents as soon as safe to do so. We ask families not to call or text their child directly during a LOCKDOWN, as a ringing phone can endanger hiding students; official updates will come directly from the district or emergency response agencies.

New resources aim to prevent & identify infant abuse New resources aim to prevent & identify infant abuse

Minnesota Department of Health brandmark

The Minnesota Department of Health has released new tools for parents and caregivers aimed at preventing and identifying abuse in infants age 6 months and younger. The Minnesota Legislature passed Statute 144.124 in 2025, which directed MDH to make resources available to educate parents and caregivers on the signs of physical abuse in infants and how to report it.

"Ensuring that parents and caregivers recognize the red flags for serious injury in babies is a vital step in protecting our most vulnerable Minnesotans," said Dr. Robsan Tura, assistant commissioner for the MDH Health Improvement Bureau. "By providing clear, accessible information during the first months of life, we are giving families and caregivers the tools they need to act quickly, trust their instincts and seek help before a situation becomes a tragedy."

Signs of physical abuse in infants can include bruising, mouth or facial injuries, as well as symptoms of abusive head trauma (also called Shaken Baby Syndrome). Infants under 6 months of age are more likely to experience serious physical abuse than older children. In 2025, there were 195 infant physical abuse cases opened for a child protection response in Minnesota.

Materials are available on the MDH identifying signs of physical abuse in babies webpage in English, Hmong, Somali and Spanish.
