Dear KRS families,

This week, we celebrated World Read Aloud Day! Next week is Valentine's Day! Please read the very important Madison elementary Valentine's Day celebration guidelines included within this newsletter.

On Wednesday evening, the KRS Parent Book Club convened via Zoom to discuss The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. The discussion group engaged in interesting, relevant, and informative discussions about the content of the meeting's assigned chapters of the book. There will be another meeting in early April (Date To Be Determined). Everyone is welcome to attend.

I am sorry to share that our recently retired lunch person Mrs. Betty Noetzli passed away this week. She was very fond of the KRS students, staff, and families. I worked with Betty for many years, first as a teacher in Harding and then as a principal at KRS. This link includes her obituary.

Have a great weekend and for those of you planning to watch, enjoy the Super Bowl!

Sincerely,

Dr. Kathy Koop

Curriculum News

Dear Families,

We have just completed our mid-year reading assessments. Your STAR reports will be sent home on 2/14. In grades 1-5 please look in your child’s reading bag or backpack for their current books which are their just right/independent level. A just right level is an abbreviation for a set of reading behaviors/skills. Different levels denote different behaviors and skills. The books coming home are books they can comprehend and read these books with at least 96% accuracy. It is worth noting that in the upper grades and upper reading levels students move less frequently. For example in 5th grade the average growth is 3 levels a year. If there are concerns about your child’s growth your teacher would have reached out to you in advance. If you have any questions you are always welcome to contact your teacher(s) at any time.
