Mr. Macken's Message

Dear Centerville Families,

Centerville teachers do an amazing job of placing students in class groupings to create the greatest opportunity for all students to succeed. They use their professional judgment to consider each child’s learning style, gender, academic achievement, special behavioral and learning needs, as well as the combination of student energy levels and personalities. As a team, they balance all of these factors so that all classrooms have a rich diversity of talents, skills, and needs.

The process of creating class lists each school year requires much time and consideration. For example, if your child is in second grade, all 2nd-grade teachers and specialists get together and spend many hours crafting the classroom lists for the next school year.

So, where does parent input fit in? Parents/guardians have an opportunity but are not required to select the best learning style for their child. It is not a teacher popularity contest. All of our teachers are highly qualified and experienced educators. Parents may indicate their preferences, understanding that the school will do its best to accommodate one of their preferences. Please do NOT simply allow your child to make their own choice based on teacher popularity among their peers. While your preferences are important, balanced classrooms are a priority.

Be aware that the list of teachers in each grade level is subject to change before school begins. If a teacher assignment changes, your child will remain in the assigned classroom grouping.

The Teacher Input Survey link and additional information is provided below. The survey for teacher input for the 2026-2027 school year opens on Friday, April 3rd, at 8 am and closes on Sunday, April 12th, at 9PM. Please make a separate request for each of your children.

Please Note:

  • Due to the complexity of enrollment and staffing in kindergarten, parent requests for students entering kindergarten are not accepted by any elementary school in our district.
  • All teacher/classroom assignments are tentative and subject to change.

Go Cougars!

Mike Macken

Inspiring Creativity, Enriching Education: Fund the Need 2026

Thank you for your support of the Centennial Area Education Foundation (CAEF) annual gala. Donations are still being accepted for Fund the Need, an initiative marking the second year of an exciting multi-year commitment to enhancing Pre-K– grade 12 Music and Arts Education in our schools. By expanding access to essential resources, we’re ensuring that every student has the opportunity to explore, create, and grow through the arts. With your support, this year we will:

🎺 Equip grades 6-12 band programs with the instruments needed for student participation.

Why It Matters: Arts education nurtures creativity, confidence, and collaboration—essential skills that shape well-rounded, inspired students. Join us in making the arts accessible for all, ensuring that every child, from Pre-K through high school, has the opportunity to discover their creative potential.

Together, we can make a lasting impact!

See the Centennial Area Education Foundation website for more information and to donate.

School Board hosts Listening Session April 20

In ongoing efforts to gather feedback from stakeholders, the School Board is hosting quarterly Listening Sessions for the public. The next session will be held on April 20, 5:30 p.m.-6:15 p.m. in the District Board Room.

The sessions provide the opportunity for community members, staff, parents, and students to meet informally with board representatives and the superintendent to discuss topics in the schools. Listening Sessions increase communication and engagement work that reflects the district’s commitment to excellence. Additional sessions to seek input/perspective on topics established by the Board would be scheduled as a special or additional Board Listening Session.

Board members or the superintendent may ask clarifying questions of you as the participant to gain a thorough understanding of your concern, suggestion, or request. If there is any follow-up or response to your comment or suggestion, you will be contacted via email or phone in a timely manner by a member of the board or administration. Please be aware that disrespectful comments or comments of a personal nature, directed at an individual either by name or inference, will not be allowed. Personnel concerns should be directed first to a principal or executive director of the department, then to the executive director of human resources, then to the superintendent, and finally, in writing, to the board. More information can be found on the Centennial website.
