A MESSAGE FROM THE NUTRITION DEPARTMENT A MESSAGE FROM THE NUTRITION DEPARTMENT

Breakfast and Lunch are at no charge to ALL students again this year; BUT Individual milk, 2nd meals, and ala carte items are NOT included in the free meal waiver the USDA extended for this school year. A free meal consists of at least 3 components from the dairy, fruit, vegetable, grain, and meat/meat alternate groups. If your student wants a carton of milk to go along with their cold lunch from home, that milk costs $0.40 each. Please deposit money into your meal account to pay any negative balances and to have funds available if your student will be purchasing any of the above-mentioned items from the meal lines. Thank you.

Because our students far exceeded their fundraising goal, every grade earned inflatable fun on Tuesday and the top-earning classrooms enjoyed extra jumping time on Monday.

TITLE I FAMILY READING NIGHT TITLE I FAMILY READING NIGHT

Thank you to everyone who attended Monday's Title I Family Reading Night. Special thanks to Tom Wenner with Horace Mann for donating the bikes for our drawing! Four lucky students went home with some fabulous new wheels and every student who attended received free books that were donated by the PTO.

VEGGIE TASTING VEGGIE TASTING

Valerie Prax of the Kanabec County Master Gardeners came in to do a veggie taste test with the 5th grade students as part of our "Gardening is Science" collaboration. She discussed the different parts of various plants that we eat and also discussed the importance of "eating the rainbow" -- eating a variety of fruits and veggies that are all different colors. The kids tasted cabbage, beets, kale, sweet peppers, rutabaga, and grape tomatoes. For many students, they tried a brand new veggie or two for the first time, and some even found a new favorite! Many thanks to Val for leading this event!

EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS

HOW TO APPLY FOR EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS LETTER
Please consider filling out an Application for Educational Benefits. While meals are free for all families this school year, the information from these forms has a DIRECT impact on school funding. What this means is that with fewer people completing the form, the school will actually receive less funding in the coming years. This could result in programs offered to students, teachers unable to qualify for grants, staffing reductions, or the district having to make other difficult budget decisions. Please complete the form by October 15th.
Application Form
WITH AN APPROVED APPLICATION...
1. Your family may qualify to receive benefits through the Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) program. This program gives hundreds of dollars to qualifying families (on an ebt card) to spend at the grocery store!
2. Your family may qualify for reduced/waived school fees, such as Tech Fee, Field Trip Fees, and others.
3. Your student(s) may qualify for free or reduced tuition at some post-secondary schools
4. Approved applications help the school qualify for education funds and discounts.
5. Families with approved applications receive reduced admissions to the Science Museum, MN Children's Museum and numerous MN Historical Society Exhibits across the entire state of Minnesota.
6. Teachers can qualify for special funds/grants to use in their classrooms
7. Title I and special event nights like Family Reading Night can continue.
