Library News

Happy New Year from the SMS Library Staff!

Ms. Dolan, Ms. Moreau and Ms. Beron

The SMS library is ringing in the new year by working with our Battle of the Books

students. Weekly meetings will be held for each grade level. Students were able to sign up

for Battle of the Books in November and have been busy reading the books on the battle

list. This year the list includes 20 books by a variety of authors.

There are currently 30 students signed up for Battle of the Books. Meetings will

start the week of January 6th. During the meetings, students will have the opportunity to

participate in activities and study the books and authors. This will help to prepare them for

the national competition on February 27th.

Meeting Schedule:

6th Grade- Wednesday Mornings during Spartan Start

7th & 8th Grade- Friday Mornings during Spartan Start

Counselor's Corner

Welcome 2025 and to new beginnings! Even though we are only half way through the school year, we are very busy planning for 2025-2026. Here are some updates for 8th GRADE:

Thursday January 30th: Superior High School (SHS) counselors will be visiting Social Studies classrooms to present important information to our future freshmen. Students will come home with a white registration card. These must be signed and returned back to school by Monday, February 3rd.

Tuesday February 4th: 8th Graders will register for their 9th grade courses. We will do this together, again in Social Studies classes.

April TBD: SHS will host Freshman Orientation with an evening event. This date is still to be decided and we will share that as soon as it’s scheduled.

This is an exciting time for our 8th graders, filled with lots of different emotions. No two kids are the same when it comes to how seamlessly they transition to high school. Now would be a great time to talk to your child about the important work they are doing in school to prepare. Please know staff at both SMS and SHS are here to support them each step of the way.

All students at SMS have been learning about themselves, what skills/abilities they have and where they might fit into the world of work. Each grade level had four lessons which helped to facilitate their exploration of possible careers. Grade six lessons covered school subjects at work, interests, decision making and time management. Seventh grade lessons were exploring biases with careers choices, discovering learning pathways, learning styles and jobs/employers. Eighth grade lessons covered skill exploration, career matches, transition to high school and self advocacy. We are encouraging families to check in with their kids about what they learned. Students have access to “Xello” (district career exploration program) and could show you the completed lessons along with their results.
