Trunk or Treat
Thank you to PSO for hosting Trunk or Treat on Friday. The rain did not put a damper on the fun. Lots of laughter and smiles as Mrs. Adams and I went from trunk to trunk. It is such a fun event that brings our school community together! Thank you to everyone who participated and attended.

School Community Survey
The survey link will be shared with district families on Sunday, October 25th.
The Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District is proud to be a participating district in a nationwide research initiative led by AASA, The School Superintendents Association, in partnership with ThoughtExchange. We are joining thousands of school districts across the country in an important conversation about public confidence in education and how schools can best prepare students for the future.
At the heart of this initiative are two important questions: How can we ensure public confidence reflects the outstanding work happening in our classrooms every day? And what do our students need most to be successful in an ever-changing world?
We are inviting all BBHCSD parents, staff, and community members to share their perspectives through a brief, anonymous survey. The survey takes approximately 5–8 minutes to complete and asks participants to reflect on their confidence in public education, identify areas of strength, and suggest opportunities for improvement.
Why is your participation important?
Your feedback will serve two important purposes. First, it will contribute to nationwide research findings presented at the National Conference on Education in Atlanta in February 2027. Second, BBHCSD will receive its own district-specific results, providing valuable insights into our community's perspectives and priorities.
These findings will help inform the development of our next Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District strategic plan and provide important insight into community priorities as we prepare for future levy discussions.
We encourage every family and community member to participate. Whether you currently have children attending our schools or simply care about the future of public education, your voice matters.

A Peek at our Week
Jim Basketball Jones
Thanks to the generosity of our wonderful BBHES PSO, Jim Basketball Jones visited our elementary students last Thursday—and what an experience it was! With his incredible basketball tricks, energetic dancing, and fun games of Simon Says, he kept everyone smiling and laughing from start to finish. But beyond the fun, Jim delivered an inspiring message that truly resonated with our students: always try your best, be kind, support one another, and believe in yourself. Watching our students lift each other up with kindness, respect, and compassion during the assembly made us incredibly proud.

Please help us!
As the weather gets colder and wetter, this is a friendly reminder to help keep our kiddos safe. Students at the elementary school are not permitted to wear sandals, slippers, or aquatic shoes to school. All shoes must be close toed. Also, remember to send your child in tennis shoes on physical education days. Thank you for your help in keeping our kids safe.
Halloween at BBH Primary School
Classroom parties will take place on Friday, October 30th. Please be reminded that all volunteers will need to check in at the reception desk with a driver's license to create a visitor badge through our Centegix system. A driver's license is required for check-in. All party helpers for Kindergarten and First Grade must enter and exit through the preschool doors. Second grade helpers must enter at the main doors to check in.
Please be sure that all food sent in for parties is prepackaged and contains ingredients and nutritional information. This is critical for our students with allergies and medical needs. Please help us to keep our kids safe.
Children are permitted to wear a simple Halloween costume to school on October 31st. Please see the costume guidelines below.
Costumes should not impact the student's ability to be transported to school nor impact their ability to participate in learning activities throughout the day.
Masks are not permitted as part of the costume.
Children are to WEAR THEIR COSTUMES TO SCHOOL and will keep them on throughout the day.
Costumes should be fun and appropriate as opposed to costumes that depict blood, violence, death, or gruesome in nature. Offensive costumes should not be worn and no weapons or fake blood should be brought to school.
Makeup or face paint should not be a part of your child’s costume for school.
Please plan for costumes to be comfortable and not big and bulky, as students will be wearing them throughout the day. Please help to ensure that costumes for our younger students do not restrict the ability to independently use the bathroom. Thank you!
Bus Evacuation Safety Drill
The week of October 20, students who ride the bus will participate in required safety drills to prepare for unexpected emergencies. Supervised by drivers and school staff, students will practice evacuating through the front door, back door, and both exits at once.

Important Reminder
At BBHES, the safety and security of our students is our highest priority. To ensure our campus remains safe, we require a valid physical photo ID (such as a driver’s license or state ID) whenever you sign a student out or enter the building.
For Student Sign-Out: When you arrive, our staff will verify the name on your ID against the authorized contacts listed in our school system. If you do not have your ID with you, our staff will ask you to retrieve it before your child can be signed out.
For Volunteers & Visitors: If you plan to volunteer in our school or visit for an event, please remember to bring your photo ID with you to check in at the main office before entering.
While we understand this may occasionally cause a brief delay, these protocols are strictly enforced to safeguard every student in our care. We encourage you to keep your ID handy whenever you plan to visit.
Thank you for your partnership and cooperation in keeping our school community safe! If you have any questions or need to update your student's authorized contact list, please feel free to contact the main office.

Attendance Matters
As we continue through the 2026–2027 school year, we want to make families aware of important changes to Ohio’s attendance requirements and explain two terms you may hear throughout the year: Chronic Absenteeism and Habitual Truancy.
While these terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they are very different from one another. Most importantly, chronic absenteeism includes both excused and unexcused absences, while truancy is based specifically on unexcused absences.
Under Ohio law, ALL ABSENCES COUNT, toward Chronic Absenteeism collection. For awareness, attendance is calculated in hours and minutes, not simply days. As a result, repeated tardiness, early dismissals, appointments, and partial-day absences accumulate over the course of the school year.
A student is considered chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of the instructional time in the school year, regardless of the reason for the absence.
This means that time missed for both excused and unexcused reasons counts toward chronic absenteeism, including:
Student Illness
Medical, Dental, or Behavioral Health Appointments
Family Illness/Funerals
Religious Holidays
College Visits
Late Arrivals and Early Dismissals
Other Excused or Unexcused Absences
A student does not need to miss long stretches of school to become chronically absent. Missing approximately one to two days per month can result in a student reaching the chronic absenteeism threshold by the end of the year.
Why Attendance Matters
These changes from the state are designed to encourage schools and families to identify attendance concerns earlier rather than waiting until a significant amount of instructional time has already been lost.
At BBHES, our goal is not simply to send attendance letters or meet a state requirement. We want to work collaboratively with families to understand why a student may be missing school and, when appropriate, identify supports that can help.
We also recognize that students become ill, have medical appointments, experience family emergencies, and encounter circumstances that legitimately require them to miss school. An absence may absolutely be excused while still counting toward the state's chronic absenteeism calculation. That distinction is important for families to understand.
If you receive an attendance notification from BBHES, we encourage you to review your child's attendance record and contact the school if you have questions or believe there is an error. Our administrative and attendance teams are happy to work with you.

Be Your Best Bee-stro
The Bee Your Best Beestro is a special luncheon that is delightfully set-up on our stage during each grade level lunch period. One student from each classroom is nominated by their teacher for consistently exhibiting PAX Leader choices. These children are invited to eat lunch on the stage with the other PAX Leaders, receive a crown and are praised and joined by building. Congratulations to our September PAX Leaders of the Month!
Report Cards and Conferences
At the K-2 level, instead of sending home a report card to families during the first quarter, teachers will share student progress during conferences. This allows for more meaningful conversations with K-2 families and provides teachers the opportunity to highlight each child’s growth and goals in a personal way. Conference nights are held on the following evenings:
October 22nd: Grades 1 and 2
November 5th: Grades K-2
November 12th: Kindergarten
Additional conferences may be held on October 23rd. Your child's classroom teacher will send home a schedule as we get closer. Students in grades K-2 will receive their first report card at the end of the second quarter. Please reach out to your child's teacher should you have any questions about your child's progress anytime throughout the school year. We are partners in your child's learning.
PowerSchool Access for Kindergarten Families
Access information was emailed to Kindergarten families on Friday, September 25th. The email was sent to the primary contact and contained important information to set up your child's PowerSchool account. Please watch the video in that email prior to setting up your account. You will need to set up this account to view your child's second quarter report card. Any questions or if an additional parent needs access, please email Mrs. Melody Davies: daviesm@bbhcsd.org.
2nd Grade Veterans Celebration
BBH Primary School will be hosting a Second Grade Veteran's Day celebration on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. Our second grade students will have the opportunity to bring a Veteran family to be honored. If your 2nd grader would like to invite a Veteran to celebrate, please complete the Google Form to provide us with some information about our guests' military service. All Veterans must be registered through this form by October 28th, so that we can recognize and honor each of them during the program.
We are excited to continue this special tradition at BBH Primary School and look forward to celebrating with you. Thank you for your support in helping us make this a meaningful event for our students and community.

This process ensures that as many families as possible have the opportunity to participate.
Also, if you sign up for an alternate spot, that means you will be available to help even with a short or same day notice. The alternate may only attend the party if called upon by that classroom’s room parents.

A special shout-out to our high school band for coming over Friday afternoon to give elementary students a taste of BBH school spirit. Toys and Gadgets from Home
The toys, 3D homemade toys, balls for recess and other items that should be staying at home are finding their way at school. Unfortunately these are causing some issues because the toys are getting lost, broken, or are a distraction to the learning environment. If there is equipment your child would like to play with at recess, please let us know. We just ask to check your child's book bag from time to time, thank you.
Birthday Celebrations
Thank you, BBH parents, for your help and for adhering to our non-food guidelines for birthday parties! This is just a friendly reminder that if you’d like to send in items to celebrate your child's birthday, please ensure they are non-food items (such as pencils, erasers, stickers, etc). We also ask that you send enough for every student in the class.
Lunch Reminder
Does your child come home with a lunchbox that looks untouched? Remind them that they can always ask for more time to eat! We have a special table for students who need a few extra minutes before heading out to recess. Sometimes our kiddos are quick to say, “I’m full!” because they’re ready to play. Please encourage your child to speak up if they need more time.
Room Parent Liaison Update
The selected Room Parents have been contacted and are getting prepared for the school year. If you were not selected, please do not be discouraged. We appreciate each and every one of you for wanting to make this year special for the students.Watch for emails this coming week! These will include introductions, participating in the class roster, PSO membership and party i information.
In the meantime, don't forget you can always sign up to be a Lunchroom Volunteer.

Ohio’s attendance rules have changed, and families should know that both excused and unexcused absences now count toward chronic absenteeism. A student is considered chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of the required school hours, regardless of the reason for the absence. Regular attendance is important to help students stay engaged and successful in school and attending when not sick is important to the students overall ability to perform well academically, socially, and emotionally.

This Week's Tootle Raffle Winners
Each week, we proudly recognize several students for being PAX Leaders. Students can earn Tootles throughout the school day when staff notice them demonstrating positive behaviors such as kindness, respect, responsibility, and teamwork. Every Tootle is a celebration of students making our school a better place.
At the end of the week, all Tootles are entered into a raffle. The lucky winners are celebrated and earn the special reward of a ride down the slide! We love seeing students rise to the challenge of being role models, and we are so proud of all of our PAX Leaders.

All About PAX
At BBH Primary, we are proud to use the PAX Good Behavior Game to help create a positive and supportive learning environment. PAX encourages students to be leaders by showing kindness, respect, and responsibility throughout the school day. Students work together to build a classroom community where everyone feels safe, valued, and ready to learn. Below you will find more details of the PAX program used at BBH Primary.
Specials Rotation
Our students rotate through a six-day specials schedule rather than having the same special on the same weekday each week. Each special is assigned to a specific rotation day, and that special stays the same throughout the entire quarter. For example, your child’s Day 1 special will always be their Day 1 special. Please use the rotation below to help keep track of your child’s specials throughout the quarter!

Expected Behavior at BBH Primary
Mrs. Adams and I met with every student in grades K–2 to review the expectations for different areas around BBHES. Our students did a fantastic job demonstrating what it means to be true PAX Leaders as we practiced expectations for the bathroom, bus, cafeteria, recess, and hallways. Please click the image below to view the rules and expectations at BBH Primary. We encourage parents to review and reinforce these expectations with their children so that, together, we can continue to build a positive, safe, and supportive learning environment for all..
Character Strong: Words of the Month
ur Character Strong program helps guide students in making positive choices by focusing each month on an important character trait, such as kindness, responsibility, perseverance, and honesty. Throughout the year, we look for opportunities to recognize and celebrate students who demonstrate these qualities in their everyday actions. By highlighting acts of kindness, courage, empathy, and cooperation, we are building a school community where students learn that good character matters—not just at school, but throughout their lives.
We kicked off the school year by focusing on Kindness, encouraging students to look for ways to care for and support others. Next week, we will shift our focus to Responsibility and challenge our students to take ownership of their choices, actions, and responsibilities. We can't wait to see our students step up and show what it means to be responsible!
WIN Time (What I Need)
This year, your child may mention working with different teachers throughout the year! We are teaming up to provide extra support tailored to exactly what your child needs right now, whether that’s extra practice on a tricky concept or a little bit of a challenge to help them grow. These short blocks of time are a great way for us to give everyone targeted support, and we are really excited to see how much they progress here at BBHES.
Safety Drills at BBHES
Every month, we are required to conduct safety drills in Ohio public schools. We have already conducted a rapid evacuation drill commonly used in the event of a fire. Our students did an amazing job and followed the proper procedures by quickly evacuating the building and proceeding to their meeting points. I am proud of the students for listening and following the directions during this drill.
Throughout the school year, we will have various drills including, fire drills, tornado drills, lockdown drills, and shelter in place drills. We conduct these drills to practice in the event we must initiate any of these situations.
School Fees Due Now
School fees for students in grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade are $85.00 ($65 instructional fee and $20 Technology Fee). You may pay these online at https://www.payschoolscentral.com or send a check payable to BBHES. Please note that unpaid fees may result in your child not attending upcoming field trips. School fee waivers are available to those families who qualify. An application must be completed. Please review the application information here. Please reach out to Sheyenne Uhlir with any questions regarding school fees at 440.740.4111.

It was so nice to see so many families enjoying the time together.
Recess Expectations at BBH Primary School
At BBH Primary, we’re kicking off the year with teaching our students recess expectations! Throughout the next week, students will take part in daily lessons to explore all the fun areas of our playground. Each class will spend time in one of our five exciting spots—Hilton Hoops, Highland Hive, Chippewa Challenge, Central Station, and Wellness Way—where they’ll learn the rules of the games, practice using the equipment, and have plenty of time to “play with purpose.”
Classroom teachers will preview expectations each day, and recess monitors will model and support students on the playground. By teaching routines up front, we are setting the foundation for a safe, fun, and inclusive recess experience all year long.
Our amazing recess monitors are also working hard to build connections by learning student names and being trusted adults on the playground. With clear expectations and strong relationships in place, we’re creating a recess that’s safe, welcoming, and full of smiles for every child!
Safer Ohio School Tip Line
The Safer Ohio School Tip Line is a free, anonymous, 24/7 reporting system for all Ohio schools. Kindergarten Phase - in
We look forward to seeing our kindergarten families at phase-in this week during your scheduled day/time. Meet and Greets
We are days away from the 2026-2027 school year, and excited to see everyone in the building. Just a reminder that our Meet and Greet events for first and second grade will take place on Monday. Please see below for specific times. During the meet and greets, students should bring school supplies, meet their classroom teacher, drop off medications in the clinic, and pay school fees. During the meet and greets, families can pay the $85.00 school fee by credit card with no fee or by check written out to BBHES. There will be a table set up in the lobby to collect payments. The playground lot in the back of the building will be open. Please use the playground for additional parking.
Medication Drop off
If your student requires medication during school hours, ONLY BBHCSD clinic staff will be authorized to receive student medications and over-the-counter medicines. Please note that building secretaries and administrators will not accept any medication drop-offs without BBHCSD clinic staff present for any reason. This district protocols verifies the proper collection and receipt of prescriptions or medications, ensuring student well-being and adherence to any medicine distribution guidelines required by healthcare professionals.
If a student needs to take medication during the school day, all required medical forms must be properly completed and submitted in advance. These forms are available under the Health Services section of the District website:
https://www.bbhcsd.org/departments/pupil-services/health-services
Clinic staff will be available to accept medication on the following dates and times for BBH Intermediate Families.
Elementary (Intermediate) School, Grades 3–5: August 17, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
If you are unable to attend during these times, medications can be brought to the clinic staff on any school day during regular building hours.
School Fees
School fees for students in grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade are $85.00 ($65 instructional fee and $20 Technology Fee). You may pay these online at https://www.payschoolscentral.com or send a check payable to BBHES. School fee waivers are available to those families who qualify. An application must be completed. Please review the application information here
Important Dismissal Reminders
- All PikMyKid accounts have been defaulted to "Bus". All families must download the app and make the necessary change in PikMyKid for car pick-up, afterschool beekeepers, walkers, or afterschool clubs. Please default your account to the dismissal mode your child will use on a regular basis. Daily and reoccurring changes can be made by clicking on the dates needed for a change within the app. If you do not change your child's dismissal mode prior to the first day of school, your child will ride the bus home on that day. For more information on downloading Pikmykid, please reference the information below.
- Any changes in dismissal modes must be changed in your Pikmykid account no later than 2:45 pm. If you need assistance with this process, please email or call Mrs. Melody Davies.
- Display all car tags so they can be easily seen by our dismissal team. All first and second grade families will be provided a tag during the Meet and Greets. Kindergarten families will receive their tags at phase-in. Please keep them in your cars even if car pick-up is not your primary mode. We use these tags in the event of an emergency as well.
- Please be sure to obey ALL traffic signs in the parking lot. I frequently witness cars entering the lot where signs are clearly posted as an exit only. Thank you for your help in keeping everyone safe.
- If you need to pick up your child early, please make sure to park, come in, and sign out your child prior to 2:45 pm. No early dismissals after this time. We will not release a child to an adult without the proper identification, so please bring your driver's license.
- All walkers and bikes will be picked up on the sidewalk near the preschool. A staff member will cross the students and meet families on the north side of the property. Parents are not permitted to pick up walkers/bikers at the building/doors.
Additional PikMyKid Information
BBHES will continue to use the PikMyKid dismissal application this school year just like last year. The student information should still be populated in the program. Your child's car tag number should remain the same as last school year. All families will get a car tag which can be picked up at the Meet and Greets.
If you are not familiar with the app, please download it and review the information below.
PikMyKid is a dismissal software that is intended to simplify dismissal, reduce traffic congestion, and most importantly, improve overall safety. The unique features of PikMyKid allow you, as parents, to easily change pick-up modes, quickly delegate to an alternate individual for pickup, change to an ‘After School’ program, and even schedule for future pickup mode, pickup individual, and after-school programs. This app allows you to be in full control of your child’s dismissal and it gives the school information regarding dismissal and the ability to acknowledge every change and instantly check your child’s dismissal status should you have a question.
To Learn a little more on your own, please check out the following link that will show you a few of the PikMyKid features. https://www.pikmykid.com/features/for-parents/
All families will need to download the application and complete the registration process if not already done.
Below are a few resources to assist with the process.
New Family Orientation
Here is the presentation shared at the new family orientation last night. It was so nice to meet so many new faces and welcome you to BBH Primary School!
Transportation Information
Transportation and Bus Information
Use the following link for information about bus transportation including bus routes and "Here Comes the Bus" app. All routes should be updated by 8/08/25. Click here for the website.
Important Bus Information
As we prepare for the start of a new school year, we want to thank you in advance for your patience and understanding in the first few days and weeks of school as bus drivers begin to navigate new bus routes and new bus riders learn procedures to help ensure safe and timely pick-ups and drop-offs each day. Initial delays in pick-up times may occur, but rest assured, if your bus is running a bit behind during this initial learning phase for riders, transportation is coming.
Here are a few reminders of actions that can be taken to keep our students, drivers, and the community at large as safe as possible during transport.
- Be at the bus stop five minutes prior to stop time.
- Always know your place of safety. This will be assigned by your driver.
- Be aware of the “Danger Zone” – remember to stay 10 feet away from the bus to help ensure that the driver can see you. Never walk behind the bus.
- Use handrails when entering and exiting the school bus. Enter and exit in a single-file line.
- Always keep aisles clear by keeping backpacks and other personal items on laps.
- Students must stay in their seats, facing forward. Do not cause any distractions for the drivers.
- Stop, look left and right, and listen when crossing the street. Please wait for the driver to signal that it is safe to cross.
- To ensure safety at railroad crossings, always remain quiet until the bus has crossed the railroad tracks and the driver says it is okay to resume talking.
- Know where all emergency exits are and, in the case of an emergency, be sure to listen to drivers for any instructions.
Motorists : Please Follow All Traffic Laws Regarding Buses
According to the most recent one-day survey, school buses are illegally passed over 225,000 times every day in America. The National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) reports that more than 114,000 school bus drivers in 36 states witnessed more than 67,000 vehicles illegally passing their buses. When scaled nationally, it equates to a staggering 39.3 million dangerous violations each school year. In Ohio, more than 1,400 drivers reported 462 left-side illegal passes and 17 on the right side; scaling the numbers annually equates to over 4,500 on the left side and 170 on the right.
School bus traffic laws are in effect for the safety of children or other passengers entering or leaving a school bus. Children often will be crossing the street at the bus stop, so these laws are extremely important for their safety.

First Day of School Signs for 2026-2027 School Year
BBHCSD families are encouraged to celebrate their student’s first day of school by sharing photos of their student with a First Day of School Sign on social media. Families can visit the district website to download and print a First Day of School Sign for their student’s grade level. Throughout your student's first day of school for the 2025-2026 School Year, feel encouraged to take a moment to snap a picture with their First Day of School Sign and share it on your favorite social media platform, being sure to tag the District, which can be found on Facebook and X, @bbhcsd, and Instagram, @bbhschools and @BBH_Primary
Please Join our Amazing PSO
Registration is open for the 2026–2027 BBHES Parent School Organization (PSO)!
The PSO brings families, staff, and the school together to support student learning and a strong school community. Membership dues help fund family events, student enrichment opportunities, and classroom resources for teachers and staff.
All families and staff are encouraged to join or renew their PSO membership for the new school year. To sign up, please use the online registration link or visit the PSO Membership table at the upcoming New Family Orientation and Meet & Greet events.
School Messenger: Safe Arrival App
BBHES will be using SafeArrival, an attendance system designed to streamline absence reporting. It will allow for parents to report absences via an app, website, or phone number and will notify parents when their student is marked absent. Notifications will be sent via email, text message, and a follow-up phone call if the absence has not been reported after the initial messages.
Please be patient as we roll this new system out. If you notice an unexcused absence please notify Heather Rakestraw at 440-740-4109 on the next school day. I may take an overnight sync to update the error.
