Mr. Graves' Weekly Update
September 11th, 2023
Something to think about
Conversations about school
When you think of parent involvement, do you picture moms and dads volunteering in classrooms? That is one way to help - but research shows that supporting your students education at home is even more important. Here are conversation starters that will help you stay involved.
"Let's see what you brought home."
Look at completed work to find out what your youngster is learning and how well (s)he is doing. You could comment on the math work or social studies project, for instance ("You know a lot about our states history!") Also, respond to notes from the teacher, and sign the weekly folder or daily planner if required.
"Show me what you have for homework."
It is your child's job to do the homework, (if provided) but you play a role too. Make sure (s)he knows what is suppose to be done by having her explain the assignments to you. After (s)he finishes the homework, glance over the work to see that it is complete.
"Describe a book you enjoyed today."
This gives you and idea of what your child prefers to read. Then, build a daily reading habit by asking what (s)he would like to read tonight. Encourage reading and listening skills by reading aloud to them and letting them read aloud to you.
"Tell me what you learned that you would like to know more about."
Use their interests as jumping off points for activities to share. If (s)he like geometry, you might hunt for shapes together. If (s)he is fascinated by how animals adapt to winter, take them to the library to research the subject or to the zoo to see live animals.
With something to think about....

COVID - 19 Update
On May 11, 2023, the federal government declared the COVID-19 public health emergency to be over. In this light, Franklin County Public Health has rescinded the Franklin County COVID-19 public health emergency. This update ended school districts’ obligation to contact trace and report COVID positive cases within the community.
FCPH and CDC guidance remains as follows: “After testing positive, you should stay home for 5 days regardless of vaccination status. After 5 days, you may end isolation if you are fever-free for 24 hours (without use of fever-reducing medicine) AND your symptoms are improving.”
School Attendance Matters
PBIS Program at Goshen Lane
You may have heard your student talking about earning tickets during the school day. This is part of the the PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) Program this year at Goshen Lane. We are promoting and recognizing positive behaviors throughout the school day with a focus on always being Safe, Helpful, and Caring. Students displaying these positive behaviors can earn SHC tickets and enter them into a drawing.
Every Friday, our classroom teachers draw a name from the ticket jar and the student who has their ticket drawn wins a prize, prizes are:
Lions Lair: An opportunity to pick a prize from our Lions Lair Store. This has school supplies, fun fidgets, and other fun prizes.
Time Well Spent: An opportunity for extra recess, a snack with Mr. Graves, and other fun activities.
In addition, we still have the ultimate prize of the Golden Opportunity Pancake Breakfast! Tickets into this drawing can be earned by students who go above and beyond and are extra Safe, Helpful, and Caring. This prize can be won monthly and is announced at our monthly Town Hall Meetings!
Please talk to your students about this at home, ask them if they earned any tickets today, and celebrate with them if they have! We want them to be proud when they earn a ticket and want them to continue to earn tickets by being Safe, Helpful, and Caring!
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mr. Jasinski (Assistant Principal) at jasinskij@gjps.org
