Team Breakfast
On Friday, December 19th, each 6th grade team will be hosting a team breakfast as a fun way to celebrate the start of Winter Break. Each team’s SignUpGenius link is below. However, if there is something not listed that you'd like to send it, that is okay as well. This is one of our most loved events of the year!
What we have been learning...
Science (Mr. Minor, Mrs. Valentino, and Mrs. Brittain)
In science class, we have wrapped up our unit on the water cycle. Students were very creative with their water cycle projects- we even had some guest appearances from family members and pets!
We are now a few weeks into our study of weather. Each student has begun a digital word wall to keep track of the many new terms within this unit...feel free to have them share this with you at home! This unit begins with a focus on the conditions that affect our weather and then progresses into learning about air masses and fronts. We conclude by putting it all together to predict the future forecast.
Math (Mrs. Black and Mr. Loranger)
As mentioned in our November newsletter, this is our third unit of the year. In this unit, students will explore dividing fractions, comparing quantities, working with equivalent ratios, and—of course—linking all of these skills back to solving real-world problems.
Students will learn through a variety of instructional approaches, including whole-group lessons, small-group instruction, and mini-projects throughout the unit. Both teams have been working hard on the dividing fractions portion of the unit—ask your child about bar models or the keep, change, flip strategy!
Please be sure to check in with your child occasionally to see how they’re doing. We will likely be wrapping up dividing fractions before the holiday break and will continue our work with ratios when we return.
ELA (Ms. Bowers and Ms. Silva)
Students are diving deeply into our poetry unit! They’ve been practicing a wide range of figurative language skills, exploring many different types of poems, and examining the tools poets use to convey meaning. We are now focusing on identifying both the topic and theme within poetry. After the break, students will bring all of these skills together as they begin analyzing poems more independently.
All of this learning is happening alongside our class novel in verse, The Canyon’s Edge by Dusti Bowling — a literal cliffhanger of a book.
Writing (Mrs. Arsenault and Mr. Desenberg)
