Stingray Staff Summer Edition 6/15

A Newsletter from the Principal's Desk

Stingray StaffSummer Edition 6/15A Newsletter from the Principal's Desk

What Will 2020-21 Look Like?

Still a ton of questions, but projections are starting to come together. If you have not watched Jon Hage's (our CEO) message, please watch below. As you can tell from this, he is committed to opening classrooms and on time. (this will need board approval for a variance, if Duval delays until after Labor Day) He talks about bringing the classrooms to homes for families that are not comfortable returning. As they look to change legislation, CSUSA is working to have a 100% virtual option for our families vs. them going to FL Virtual or Duval Virtual if they don't feel comfortable returning, have family health issues, etc.

The option of fully returning to traditional classrooms in August does not seem to be a viable option. If you follow any of the news reports of what other districts and areas of the country and our state have announced, it seems like a hybrid is the most likely option.

I have included the CSUSA parent survey results about re-opening for both our state and our school so you can see what parents are thinking/feeling. We had about 400 families respond and about 20% do not feel comfortable returning and there is about another 20-30% unsure at the time of the survey.

The CDC first released guidelines and then the FLDOE/Commissioner of Ed/Governor have weighed in with guidelines. The ball is now in the court of districts, charter companies and private schools. Duval and St. John's are saying their plan will be announced the 1st-5th of July. Please know that our plan will depend on what corporate has worked through as well as our surrounding counties.

This timeline puts us with 2 weeks or so before Returning Teacher Orientation at the time we will probably know... and as we said in the spring, the planning happens way before that.

Based on FLDOE guidelines and where things are headed we would like to invite you to join us for a "Think Tank" brainstorming time. We recently did something similar as a principal group and I think it is valuable to have your input as well as give you time to think through how this might change the landscape of what we do with students to meet standards.

Rather than just team leads, we would like to open it to anyone that would like to participate. If the group is large, we have a way to structure it to ensure everyone is involved. This is not a time of us providing answers, but a time of thinking, articulating, and asking questions to the group.

Know that with each week more information will unfold but the more time we have had to wrap our heads around the options, the more productive we will be able to be for RTO and the pre-school start days! Principal Leadership Academy is the last week of June, and we will be spending more of that week thinking through options as a state team as well.

We hope a mix of you can join us (new, returning, veteran, less experienced) all voices & viewpoints are welcome! If able to join us, please sign up here: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=6IYDYQKuBkmJnU5aq6b4cV8U2Si_65NMmdyaFxpBaXdUOTgwNzFQSzEwM0NTQUZMQzU0UVpHM0dRNS4u

Hearing about layoffs in other districts?

You know I believe in full transparency, so I will share exactly where we stand...

Yes, many districts are laying off staff. WHY? The state is expected to cut the amount of money each school gets per student (FTE) based on the economic recession expected. Also, many school districts are going to lose students to homeschooling and FL virtual. Districts are expecting a 5-10% loss of incoming revenue funds. One florida district chose to lay off 17% of its employees. Yes you will see that Duval is hiring, they always start the year with hundreds of vacancies, but many schools that were fully staffed int he more affluent areas, are having teacher positions lost to budget and those teachers are being moved to Title 1 schools to fill unfilled positions.

Is CSUSA expecting layoffs? Not if we are smart with several factors. They are committing to not laying off or touching compensation. How? We are ensuring we are not spending ahead of ourselves (waiting for enrollment numbers at October count) and therefore each school is holding back 5% . Until we know what the FLDOE/State budget is and what enrollment looks like, the worst thing that can happen is to over staff or over spend prior to October. Then when funds come out, if not budgeted well, a district or charter company would have to lay off.

What does that mean for Southside? We have been asked to hold back $470,017 which is 5% of our budget We are considered Tier 1 for budget (healthy budget history and healthy enrollment with trends for enrollment continuing to uptrend) - this means it does not have to all come from positions/compensation. Some schools are haivng to cut 3-5% all in positions. We have flexibility which comes from our higher enrollment (a few of you were frustrated that CSUSA told us to go to 1145 - it is now saving positions!)

Where will we find $470,017?? We are holding off on one resource unfilled position (Spanish/music or however we were going to schedule it) & one admin assistant position at front desk, all of our capital outlay on hold - (turf, fencing replacement, upgraded marquee) and then consumables/other smaller pots of money. Again, this is a hold back, not a cut. If the state impacts FTE or our enrollment does not show up, then we would have to cut other positions, etc. If the cut is not as severe and our enrollment holds, then we would go ahead and schedule the next 1/3 of the field turf, etc.

There are increased expenses this year in facilities sanitation, thermal thermometers, hand sanitizer stations, floor markings, student partitions? masks? additional technology needed, etc. so we will have to be smarter with funding.

Savings - we throw away boxes of planners each year that parents refused to purchase due to lack of use in the classroom - we will not be purchasing this year. Music department has instruments and music, so their budget will be re-utilized. The computer lab will not be refreshed this year, but those funds re-allocated to more ipads. We were going to replace 5 of the aging display/touch screen boards with smart tvs, those funds are going to more laptops. The unused spring stipends from activities that were cut will fund the teacher laptops for the new positions we added this year. Art (like all resources) will start the year going to classrooms on a cart and with reduced numbers in the classroom, they will need less supplies this year. As we have learned to live without paper packets as much during spring, we will continue many of those practices in the hybrid model and need less copy paper, etc. Just like at home, when budget gets tight, we will find ways to least impact student learning and tighten the belt until we know more information.

Again, I want to stress that we will have areas we will have to cut back, but our healthy enrollment should keep us from losing positions, or cutting programming.

Need a Laugh?

I saw this on social media and thought it might bring a chuckle or a smile to you in this time of uncertainty...

Here's how I think requiring masks might work in elementary.

  • Please don’t snap Billy's mask in his face.
  • Your mask is not a necklace, bracelet, or any other form of jewelry.
  • You should not be using your mask as a slingshot. Please put it back on your face.
  • Please do not chew on your mask.
  • Your mask should be on your face, not on the back of your head
  • I’m sorry your mask is wet, but that's what happens when you lick the inside of it.
  • I’m sorry you sneezed. Here's a tissue. Wipe out the snot as well as you can.
  • No, you may not blow your nose in your mask.
  • Why is your mask soaking wet? You just came back from the bathroom? And you put it back on your face after you dropped it?
  • I’m sorry you broke the elastic on your mask by seeing how far the band would stretch. Now you'll have to hold the mask on your face ... or use this duct tape.
  • Please take the mask off your eyes and watch where you're walking. I don’t care if you have X-ray vision.
  • Please take the mask off of your pencil and stop twirling it.
  • I know the mask fits over your pants like a knee pad, but please take it off of your leg and put it on your face.
  • What do you mean you tried to eat your lunch through your mask?
  • Please don't share your mask or trade masks. I don’t care if you like Ingrid's mask better than yours.
  • I’m sorry, but your mask is not school appropriate.
  • We're not comparing our masks to other kids' masks… everyone’s mask is unique and special.
  • No, you may not decorate your mask instead of doing your work. I don’t care if you have a Sharpie.
  • You're not a pirate, please take your mask off your eye.
  • Try to get the gum off as much as you can.
  • Please don't use your mask to pick your nose.
  • I’m sorry you tripped, but that’s what happens when you put your feet inside the elastic of your mask.
  • No, your mask doesn't make it hard to get your work done.
  • Your Mom will need to get you a new mask since you chewed a hole in that one.
  • Why is there a shoe print on your mask?
  • No, you cannot eat the snow through your mask.
  • I don’t care if you were in art class and being creative; we do not decorate our masks.
  • We do not beam other kids in the face with balls. No, their masks don’t make it not hurt.
  • Please don't plug your nose holes with your mask.
  • Who's making that noise?
  • I’m sorry your ponytail is stuck, that’s what happens when you see how many times you can wrap it around your mask.
  • I’m sorry to tell you, but your child thought her mask made her a superhero. She tried to fly off the jungle gym at recess …
  • I’m sorry your breath stinks in your mask, maybe we should all try to brush better.
  • Please take those cookies out of your mask. No, you are not a chipmunk.

PD Opportunity

In your CSUSA newsletter. There was a link to sign up for Microsoft App training. This will be about the programs and apps available with your 365 account. The reason for this training is that with the transistion from Edmodo to Schoology, students will have Microsoft365 accounts. The more familiar you are with the powerful tools in the suite, the better you will be able to assist them. Remember that using technology tools is a life skill! Think of the opportunities... for example, you will be assisting older students with using the Calendar etc. as a digital planner rather than a notebook planner! When you open the sign up link, scroll down, there are are still a date or two with open seats. The image below is an image, so the link is not active. Use this: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0b44a5a92ca7fe3-tour

Schoology

We will be spending time in RTO learning more about our LMS (learning management system) Scholoogy. I have included a video I found on Schoology in youtube. It is 58 minutes, but if you want to have a preview to begin to become familiar, that might make the steep learning curve of learning a new system a little easier if you have at least seen some of the components before. It think you find much of the view, etc. similar to Edmodo.

Schoology is fully functional with Powerschool. It is also all set to integrate with Nearpod and Khan Academy. I am not sure what that means, but it may pull their grade back to Schoology if they follow the nearpod link or khan link from the schoology assignment page!

It is fully functional with Teams and Microsoft 365 which means all software a student needs to create work, projects, assignments should all be available to them through schoology, which helps with integration and compatibility. I know Ms. Cox/Walter ran into issues last year with powerpoint, etc. and student owned computers, not have the same version. Schoology should fix that with student 365 accounts!
