A note from the principal A note from the principal

Dear Park Brook Families,

We will continue to have math, reading, and lessons in all curricular areas right up through the last week of school. However, we also have special events and activities mixed in throughout the coming weeks.

We have students who are regularly late to school. These students miss the same subject every time they are late to school. Attendance is closely related to academic growth, and while some may feel that it is just a few minutes each day, it is the same subject every day. For example, some grades have Number Corner (introduction to math concepts and review) at the beginning of the school day, and the students who are consistently late miss these lessons.

Report cards will be posted on ParentVUE by the end of the day on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

While report cards share where the students are at the end of the school year, we do not want students to lose skills over the summer.

Throughout the summer, we encourage all of us to enjoy reading. Reading to a child is just as valuable as having them read to themselves.

  • Enjoy reading a chapter book to your child before they go to bed, a short section every evening.
  • Visit the library.
  • Take books with you to the park, read, and then enjoy time playing on the equipment or a picnic.

Just as I encourage students to read, I look forward to reading this summer as well. I find it very relaxing to begin the day reading the paper. I also enjoy sitting outside, enjoying a summer day, and reading a good book just for the sake of enjoyment.

Emergency Situations at School

This past week all students and staff moved to their severe weather locations in the building in under a minute from when I made the announcement. The students know how to do this, and overall remained quiet the entire time which ensured that I could give announcement if needed.

Throughout the year we practice for severe weather, evacuations, and how to be safe if we need to lock ourselves into secure spaces in the school. We practice so we are ready, and the students demonstrated that they could quickly do so.

In the event of an emergency in the school, I know the first response may be to call the school or come to the school. We ask that you NOT come to the school or call the school as it ties up the phones and could potentially stop emergency responders from getting to the school.

In the case of a severe weather situation, before I get into a safe place with the students, I quickly walk the halls, give one final check of doors, and ensure that everyone has moved to a safe location. I take the safety of the students and staff seriously. (During a severe weather event, the front office staff under my direction move to safe locations and therefore phones will not be answered, nor will anyone respond to someone at the front door.)

If you ever have questions about our safety procedures, I am more than willing to visit with you as I am entrusted with the safety of your child each and every school day.

As part of our Focus on Fitness, we encourage all students to get at least 60 minutes of exercise every day. Students do not call it exercise, rather they call it play.

Increasing fitness levels and movement, increases academic growth, positive behaviors, and is good for mental health.

Play fighting and wrestling are not permitted at any time. While this may be fine at home, with so many students it can quickly escalate and lead to a fight.
