Behavior and Discipline at Providence Hall Elementary

The administration and staff at Providence Hall Elementary are committed to creating the ideal learning and growing environment for each and every student. As you may imagine this is tricky when you have to balance the support needs of individual students with the over-arching responsibility to uphold the integrity of our learning system.

We think it might be helpful to share that we know and are committed to these maxims:

1. Students at PHES are held to a high standards.

2. Those standards are defined through academic and behavioral expectations.

3. We teach, reteach, enforce and reinforce those expectation explicitly - students have to know success criteria if they are going to be successful.

4. Reinforcement comes by means of specific and relevant praise and rewards for specific desired behaviors and outcomes.

5. Enforcement comes by means of lovingly helping students see where they failed to meet expectations, assigning natural and appropriate consequences, and giving them the confidence to try again until they get it right.

Let's focus on number five for a moment. You probably know that Providence Hall, like every school, has a discipline policy. In fact, we have lots of discipline policies, and there is an entire handbook full of them. On top of that there are more particular expectations for different parts of the school day and different parts of the campus (i.e., the "Hallway PACT and other PACTs). Beyond that the classroom teachers have their own expectations that they teach, reteach, enforce and reinforce with the students. Each of these policies and expectations carries with it success criteria as well as rewards or consequences for students depending on how they act. If a student violates what we (in the student handbook) define as a "Major" violation, or if they repeatedly violate "minor" rules, they may be referred to the office where they are asked questions in the most loving way you can imagine by our Mrs. Baker, Mrs. LeGendre, and/or Mr. Fry. The intent of these questions is always to determine if and to what extent a expectation or policy was violated and what the consequence and next step should be. We always strive to make these learning experiences for students, and we always seek to ensure they know we love them and know they can improve.

We are extremely proud of the way we have been able to maintain the integrity of our learning structure and systems through consistent enforcement of expectations and policies. This is what makes Providence Hall a safe school that is conducive to learning and growing.

We also know that disciplinary action is a response to behavior - a necessary response, but a response nonetheless. We reject the notion that some professionals propose that responses to behavior should be strictly rehabilitative and not include natural and logical consequences for bad decisions. We give out recess detentions and time-outs in the office and even out-of-school suspensions as appropriate. In each case though we also strive to understand the behaviors that lead to discipline incidents and seek ways to help students improve behavior. Our administration, counseling team, and teachers seek to understand student motivations through the lenses of behavioral psychology and also neuropsychology. We look for antecedents to student behaviors, and ask ourselves what is going on in a child's brain when they exhibit certain behaviors. We also think carefully about what is happening in the teacher or other support provider's brain as we attempt to respond to the student's behavior.

We really believe that the more we understand human behavior the more capable we are of helping students make good decisions that will reduce the need for disciplinary actions.

We encourage you as parents to have a better understanding of how Providence Hall Elementary views student behavior by reading or reviewing these documents:

Parents On Campus

Hey Parents, just a reminder that henceforth you will please say goodbye to your child in the carpool lane or at the kindergarten gate. The first few days of allowing parents on campus with their children has come and gone. We'll be ready to help your kiddo if they are struggling in the morning.

Good news - there are two more days in the school year when you can come onto campus with your student - we call these events "Parents, Patriots and Pastries" mostly because we are keen on alliterations and also because we like to eat donuts. The next Parents, Patriots and Pastries event is September 19th. Save the date!

Breakfast and Lunch Menus Breakfast and Lunch Menus

Dear Parents,

We are grateful that so many students join us for breakfast each morning! To keep our meal program in compliance with state and federal guidelines, we need to remind families that students must eat breakfast at the school they attend.

Each school’s breakfast is planned and portioned specifically for the age group it serves. When students eat at a different campus, they may receive meals that don’t match the requirements for their grade level.

Beginning immediately, students will need to eat breakfast at their assigned school only. If a student arrives at another campus, staff will kindly direct them back to their own school.

Thank you for your support as we continue working to provide nutritious, well-balanced meals for all of our students. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
