Principal's Corner

Spring is in the air! It is hard to believe that May is here. This is the last full month of this school year, but we still have a lot to accomplish as we see the finish line nears. Let's continue to work together to ensure the success of our kids. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to reach out to your child's teacher or myself. Let's make the last days, the best days.

Go Eagles!

Child Abuse Prevention Month

As part of Child Abuse Prevention Month, every building in our district is displaying colorful pinwheels on their school grounds. The "Pinwheels for Prevention" campaign serves as a visual reminder that we all play a role in preventing child abuse and neglect.

Dimes for Diapers

Our Central Elementary Student Council facilitated the Dimes for Diapers again this year. This charitable event raises money for children in our community living in poverty. Many families can’t afford diapers and few resources exist to help them. State and federal assistance cannot be used to buy diapers. Many of these children are forced to stay in diapers for days at a time, increasing the risk of diaper rash, infections, neglect and even child abuse. Each dollar that was donated will buy eight diapers at cost to help families in the Flint and Genesee County area. Diapers are also being collected for distribution. Our building raised $2,200! Our two top classes were Mr. Smith and Mrs. Bowles. Both classes received pizza parties. Thanks for your support.

Writing Exploration

Mrs. Perkins' writing students completed their informational writing pieces. Her students learned how to use the writing process and research a topic. The research topic was explorers from the time period of the Vikings to exploration of the New World. Each student researched and wrote about a different explorer. With time spent on revision and editing, the pieces were then typed. These published pieces are displayed in the hallways of Central.

Skittle-icious

Have you ever tasted a rainbow? Students in Mrs. Fitzgerald's math class got to do just that when they used Skittles in a variety of colors to build a graph. After collecting enough Skittles over the course of a week, each child used masking tape on the table to build either a bar or line graph. Graphs had to include a title, numbering system and labels, subtitles, and a key that explained the number of items graphed as well as the average. Once these models were transferred to paper, students took some time to enjoy a sweet treat with the "skittle-icious" goodness of some clean ones.

Reaching for the Stars

Mr. Sinn and Mrs. Perkins fifth grade team went on a field trip to the Longway Planetarium in Flint. The students had the opportunity to view the show Stars. Stars is a documentary on the birth, life, and death of a star. The students learned a lot of interesting facts during this showing. One of the students' favorite facts was that a pulsar is so dense that a tennis ball size pulsar would equal the weight of the entire planet Earth because of its density!! That was very difficult for us to wrap our heads around...that anything in the universe could be that dense!! The imagery was exceptional in the show Stars, and seeing it at the planetarium was a thrilling experience...especially at the end when we were taken on a simulated ride through space...we had to close our eyes a few times to regain our stability!

State Research Papers

Students in Mrs. Cooke’s social studies classes finished off a unit on the five regions of the United States by completing a state report. Each student was assigned a state, completed research, and gave an oral presentation about their state. Great job to all!

Travelers

Mrs. Adams' and Mrs. Valley's social studies students took a vacation across the United States. They made rolling suitcases and wrote letters to their teachers about the places they visited. During their imaginary travels they even purchased souvenirs.

Creative Energy

Mr. Smith's 4th grade science classes came up with new and creative devices that are powered by renewable energy. The classes moved into the cafeteria in order to have the space needed for this project. Students made models of their devices. Using poster board they illustrated how the energy is transferred from the renewable energy to the device. When the project was completed students presented the models to their class.

Matter Matters

Shock and awe can happen at school too! Students in Mrs. Koledo’s science class are working on various matter concepts within the framework of Properties of Matter. Density of materials and relative density were explored last week. Now the students are following up with the Law of the Conservation of Matter. Measurement tools and skills are employed during all the lessons, and the carry over into other subjects is a natural progression.

Bill of Rights

Mrs. Foguth's social studies classes had fun learning the events that led to the Revolutionary War. After learning about the Bill of Rights and the rationale behind them, each group was assigned a specific Amendment to present to the class. The students were given various opportunities in which they could present the information. Some groups performed short skits, Google slide shows, cartoons, and even a song with a sic beat! Students exceeded all expectations - demonstrating their knowledge and creativity of these very sacred rights that we all have as US citizens.

Geo Fun!

The math groups in Mrs. Wernet's class had Math Manipulative Day. The students used Geoboards to make intersecting, parallel and perpendicular lines. Angles were also experimented with as the students made right, acute, obtuse, and straight angles. Students created their own designs and patterns, too!

Buddy System

Peer leaders in Mrs. Koledo’s class take part in a buddy system with Mrs. Odell’s classroom. Every afternoon two to three students head down the hall and join the class of eight students. The goal is to engage and socialize with the students in whatever activity they are currently participating in. These future leaders recognize the importance of kindness and positive guidance and what an impact it has on those students around them.
