Valley View Middle School - Principal's Message Valley View Middle School - Principal's Message

Happy Labor Day Weekend Jaguar Community!

We hope you’re enjoying this well-deserved three-day weekend with family and friends. Believe it or not, this week marks the halfway point of Quarter 1 - and what a fantastic start it’s been! Our students are doing great and we’re especially proud of the way they’ve embraced our schoolwide focus on kindness.

Through Minga, our student engagement app, students earn Kindness Points when they are recognized for positive actions. These points can then be redeemed for rewards and special opportunities on campus. Later this week, any student who has earned at least one Kindness Point can stop by our snow cone table for a sweet treat! Specific snow cone days will be shared with students during morning announcements.

We’re also excited to cheer on our athletes as our Flag Football league kicks off their very first game this Friday, September 5th. Go Jaguars! We love seeing our students shine both inside and outside the classroom - whether it’s through acts of kindness, school spirit, or teamwork on the field.

Thank you for your continued support in making Valley View such a positive, connected, and thriving community.

Warmly,

Ms. Jamie Keith

Principal, Valley View Middle School

School Site Council School Site Council

We currently have one vacant Parent position on our School Site Council and are looking for a parent who would like to serve!

The School Site Council plays an important role in shaping the direction of our school. Members provide input on the School Plan for Student Achievement, review and amend our School Safety Plan, and help guide the use of certain school funds. It’s a great way to be directly involved in supporting student success at Valley View.

Our School Site Council typically meets once a month for 60–90 minutes, either in person or virtually. If you are interested in running for this parent position, please complete the self-nomination form by CLICKING HERE. Nominations will be accepted through September 5th. If multiple parents express interest, a ballot will be sent out the week of September 7th so our school community can vote.

We encourage all interested parents to consider applying - your voice matters!

At Valley View, we want our students to feel comfortable while also maintaining a learning environment that is respectful and distraction-free. For that reason, shirts must have straps or sleeves - tube tops are not allowed.

Why? Our campus is full of energy! Students are still at an age where they play chase, give piggy-back rides, jump around, and are simply silly with friends. Strapless tops often need adjusting and can slip during these kinds of activities, which can be uncomfortable and unsafe. By asking that shirts have straps or sleeves, we’re supporting a safe, active, and inclusive environment where students can focus on learning and enjoy their play.

We also want to remind families that clothing with references to alcohol, drugs, weapons, or sexual content is not permitted at school. Recently we’ve noticed an increase in shirts featuring alcohol brands and breweries. Please help us by ensuring students come to campus in attire that sends a positive, age-appropriate message.

Thank you for supporting a safe and respectful school community where students can be themselves and thrive.

Energy Drinks & Soda on Campus Energy Drinks & Soda on Campus

We want to make families aware that we have seen an uptick in students bringing energy drinks and soda to school. While these beverages are marketed to provide a quick boost, they often contain high levels of caffeine and sugar, which can negatively impact young people’s health. Potential side effects include increased heart rate, anxiety, difficulty focusing, dehydration, and disrupted sleep, none of which support student well-being or learning.

For these reasons, we strongly discourage students from consuming energy drinks or soda, especially during the school day. We appreciate your help in reminding your child to choose healthier options, such as water or milk, to stay hydrated and energized throughout the day.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and for helping our students make healthy choices.

Our first Association Meeting of the year is scheduled for Wednesday, September 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Library. Come meet our school counselors who will be giving a presentation on their services in support of our kids and families, learn about the new middle school sports league, get an update from Vice Principal Buhler, ratify our budget for the year, hopefully fill two open roles, and enjoy refreshments and fellowship! The meeting will be optimized for in-person interaction with a Zoom attendance link to be provided closer to the meeting date.

The two open roles that we need to fill as soon as possible are: 8th-grade Promotion/Party and Financial Secretary - click here if you can help by volunteering for one of these positions!

If you have an interest in any Board position, please reach out! We would love to have you “shadow” us before taking on a role like President, Treasurer, Fundraising, Programs & Hospitality, or Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) next year or beyond.

Volunteering at VVMS

We strongly encourage parents and guardians to get cleared by Mt. Diablo Unified School District to volunteer on campus. There will be calls for help for the Library, Book Fairs, Field Day, lunch period monitors, field trip chaperones, Teacher Appreciation Luncheons, dances, and more - and we hope you’ll want to sign up when you can. Don’t let not being cleared block you from participating - get your paperwork taken care of and come join the volunteers on campus!

Here’s to another great school year!!
