Dear Northfield Public Schools Families:

This is the first time I have written to you since the cowardly actions of Vance Boelter robbed Minnesota of the leadership gifts of Representative Melissa Hortman and her beloved husband, Mark. Today, the Hortmans lie in state at the Capitol in St. Paul. Fewer than 20 Minnesotans have lain in state and Rep. Hortman will be the first woman to be given that honor.

The specter of this heinous assassination, along with the associated shootings of Sen. Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, marks an inflection point for our culture. In the immediate aftermath, we are filled with despair and anger. The long-term impact on our culture remains to be seen. I encourage you to read this statement written by Sophie and Colin, the adult children of the Hortmans. This segment is deeply meaningful. Despite their grief, they encourage us to show love for others:

“Hope and resilience are the enemy of fear. Our parents lived their lives with immense dedication to their fellow humans. This tragedy must become a moment for us to come together. Hold your loved ones a little closer. Love your neighbors. Treat each other with kindness and respect.”

For a local example of how joy can persist despite darkness, listen to this Minnesota Public Radio story about a Northfield man who is making a difference in a unique and powerful way.

When we make the handoff to the next generation, we want to be proud of what we’ve built for them. Let’s model respect for one another, even in the deepest of disagreements. Let’s ensure we don’t take our wonderful school district community or each other for granted. Let those closest to us know how much we love them. In the midst of heartbreak, it is essential that we move forward together.

Sincerely,

Matt

Transportation Fee

State statute requires districts to transport students who live two miles or more from their school. Effective for the 2025-26 school year, Northfield Public Schools will begin charging a fee for transportation between our current transportable boundary up to two miles from school. This recommendation was approved as part of the priority-based budget reductions on April 28, 2025. Here are the details:

  • The fee will be $250 per year per student, with a family cap of $500.

  • Fee area:

    • Elementary students: 0.75 miles to 1.99 miles from school

    • Secondary students: 1.0 miles to 1.99 miles from school

  • Families who will be required to pay a fee for busing for the 2025-26 school year should have received a notification attached to their pre-filled bus form.

  • Families who filled out a blank form should contact the district office at (507) 663-0600 to determine whether they will be required to pay a fee.

  • The fee will be waived for students who qualify for free or reduced meal benefits.

  • If you have questions about the fee, contact Director of Finance Val Mertesdorf at (507) 663-0600.

  • Families who are required to pay a fee will be able to pay online starting August 1, 2025.
