Navigating Emotions with the Mood Meter: This Week in SEL
This week in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), students are focusing on understanding their feelings and choosing constructive ways to respond using the Mood Meter. The Mood Meter helps students map their feelings by looking at the relationship between their energy level (vertical axis) and how pleasant an emotion feels (horizontal axis).
Here is a summary of what students are exploring and practicing this week:
- Recognizing Key Moments: Students are discussing how the Mood Meter is especially valuable right before reacting (such as snapping or shutting down), during conflicts, when feeling overwhelmed, or before high-stress events like tests and presentations. Pausing to name what is happening internally empowers students to choose their next step instead of letting emotions control their choices.
- Analyzing Real-World Scenarios: In small groups, students examine everyday situations—such as failing a quiz after studying hard, being left out at lunch, feeling shaky before presenting, or seeing a rude post online. For each scenario, groups identify the likely emotions, locate them on the Mood Meter quadrant, and select an effective coping response.
- Matching Coping Strategies to Specific Moods: Students are learning that coping strategies are not one-size-fits-all. For example, deep breathing works best for high-energy emotions, physical movement helps activate low-energy emotions, and talking to a trusted person helps when feelings feel heavy or stuck. Other strategies explored include positive self-talk, journaling, listening to music, and asking for help.
Core Takeaway: The Mood Meter allows students to connect their energy levels with their pleasantness, giving them a reliable set of coping tools to draw from depending on where they land on the grid

Protocol for Spectators at WBSD Sporting Events
We love seeing our WBMS families showing their LAKER pride and supporting our students at athletic events! Please remember that the same expectations apply at WBMS athletic events as they do when our middle school students attend WBHS events.
Students must be supervised by a parent/guardian throughout the event. The supervising parent/guardian must be listed on the student’s PowerSchool account. Athletic events are not drop-off events for middle school students.
Thank you to our parent community for understanding the importance of working together to provide a safe, positive, and enjoyable environment for everyone. We appreciate your partnership and support!
WBMS Athletic Events this week...
Student Spectators MUST leave the school and return with their parent/guardian to attend the event. Student spectators are not allowed to remain unsupervised on school campus between dismissal and the event.

Volunteers and Visitors to the Building
Unscheduled visitors coming to the building will not be permitted to enter past the front office. Drop-in visitors will not be allowed to enter the building without a pre-scheduled appointment. We will continue this approach in an effort to maximize safety and security while minimizing disruptions to learning.
Volunteers, both parent/community volunteers (Reading Mentors, Watch DOGS, classroom volunteers, etc.) as well as student mentors in programs such as the professional apprenticeship, are permitted under the following circumstances:
- They must have approval from the principal and teacher before volunteering.
- Interested volunteers must also complete a volunteer form and provide a copy of their driver’s license/ID to the school’s office staff upon request. Once completed, the paperwork is forwarded to HR for a background check (ICHAT).
- iCHAT background checks are still required for all non-student volunteers.
What's Happening in the iCenter
Each advisory class has a scheduled recess as part of a rotation which includes: iCenter, Outdoor/ Track and field, Indoor Gym activities, and Board Games in the classroom.
A wide variety of activities are set up in the iCenter for our students to interact and engage with each other. We encourage social interaction and collaboration through shared experiences.
Personal Tech Device Policy
Review the grade-level guidelines for middle school students, including where and when personal devices may be used and stored. Please note that updated state law restricting personal wireless device use during instruction takes effect beginning in the 2026–27 school year.

Fueling Kids Futures
Dear Parents of West Bloomfield School District Students,
If your child is a student (3 to 26 years of age) in the West Bloomfield Schools, s/he can also participate in the 2026-27 Fueling Kids’ Futures–One Meal at a Time (previously known as Blessings in a Backpack) program. This program sends six non-perishable meals home each Friday of the school year. Its goal is to make sure that no child goes hungry on the weekend. Run by volunteers, there is NO cost to you.
To enroll in this program, please fill out the form below and return it to your school office or email it to katherinesheiko@hotmail.com. This registers your child/ren in the Fueling Kids’ Futures–One Meal at a Time program and alerts us to any allergies they might have. The first bag of food will be sent home in mid September. Any student enrolled in the program for the 25/26 school year will automatically be enrolled for the 26-27 school year and does not have to fill out an application.
Bus Procedure
If your student misses their bus they should report to the office to call you. Students ring the doorbell and will be allowed to enter the main office.
An administrative assistant is in the office until at least 4pm to let students inside the building.
