It's that time of year again where families across the nation will gather together to share heartfelt moments with loved ones, a time when most try to put aside the busy hubbub of daily living for precious moments where they can focus on the most important parts of life with those most important to them.

Here's a small bit of history on Thanksgiving. We all know the story of the pilgrims and natives and the story of the first Thanksigiving, but as a country, George Washington was the first president to celebrate a Thanksgiving, Abraham Lincoln was the first to declare the celebration occur on the last Thursday of November, and, after a bit of dabbling with changing the week in the 1940s, Congress during the Franklin D. Roosevelt era officially gave it that 4th Thursday in the month date we are all so familiar with.

As Halloween fell on a Thursday this year, Thanksgiving falls on the last possible day that it could, November 28th. It's a bit amazing to me how December will be in affect before we ever come back from the break, and we will only have three weeks of school before the semester ends.

I don't think anyone is complaining.

It's a short week, and I will keep it brief.

SHOUTOUTS

Shoutout to all those students that have brought in cans for the annual food drive. Tomorrow, Monday, the 25th is the last day to bring items.

Shoutout to the JH basketball teams. This past week saw some of their best basketball of the season, ending with all teams winning in Rexford. The team is steadily improving under Coaches Reem, Allen, Baranawell, and Witt.

Shoutout to all of the high school students and coaches that were back in action this past week. It was nice to hear the sounds of bouncing basketballs cascading throughout the hallways this past week as all teams were fully back in action. This week will be our last week without competition for the high school. The Friday after break will be our first HS home basketball game.

Minnick Named All-State Honorable Mention

Shoutout to junior Brylee Minnick for being named Honorable Mention on the Kansas Volleyall Association All-State Team.

Fortin and Ketterl play in NWKS All-Star Game

Shoutout to seniors Makadyn Ketterl and Jenna Fortin. The two were able to play in the NWKS All-Star game last Sunday. These girls work hard at everything they do, whether it be the courts or the classrooms.

Bailey Named to NWKL All-League Team

Shoutout to sophomore Rustin Bailey who earned these All-League Recognitions:

First Team: Offensive Line

Honorable Mention: Linebacker

Butterfield Named to NWKL All-League Team

Shoutout to junior Theo Butterfield who earned this All-League recognition:

Second Team: Defensive Line

Ostmeyer Named to NWKL All-League Team

Things You Should Know

Active Shooter Training

On Wednesday, December 4th, we will have an Early Release day. During that afternoon, we will be having an active shooter training event that will involve all parties that would be engaged in a real situation.

During this event, there will be no students involved, unless they are a volunteer for the event. This event will involve local law enforcement, ambulance, and even helicopters, all emergency responders. We are getting the information out in as many ways as possible and as soon as possible so that everyone is aware that it is JUST A DRILL.

Early Release Days to Plan For

Throughout the month of Decemeber we will have several Early Release Days to plan for. Here are a few days to put on your radar for the week we come back.

12:00 - Wednesday, December 4th

2:00 - Friday, December 6th

I leave thinking about just a few things that I am thankful for:

Thankful that I have a student body where I know every student's name.

Thankful that I have a supportive, talented staff that works hard to improve.

Thankful for a superintendent and school board that have shown support and consistently show a desire to improve their town.

Thankful for a community that has embraced myself and my family, a community that has been everything that I hoped it would be when I came here.

Thankful for all of the parents that I have gotten to know over the past 2 1/2 years.

Thankful for the opportunity to be a part of a bright future that I believe is in store for Oberlin.

Whether you are traveling (be careful, I see freezing weather creeping into the forecast here in Oberlin for Thanksgiving break) hosting, or simply enjoying time at home, have a great Thanksgiving!
