Walk & Roll to School Day 2024 will be here in two weeks
Are you ready to stroll & roll? The 28th annual National Walk & Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 9 is almost here!
To the communities that have already registered their events: You are rock stars! And if you haven’t signed up yet, there’s still time to sign up and plan an event in as few as 7 days!
A Walk & Roll to School Day event can serve as the starting point for a safety project at a specific school, a citywide safety effort for youth walking and rolling, a movement to improve health by encouraging physical activity, or a longer-term safety effort like Vision Zero for Youth. So, let’s get moving on October 9 and beyond!
A few tips and reminders:
- Register your event today to be included in the national count.
- Find creative inspiration by exploring our event ideas.
- How many events in your state are registered? Explore this map showing who’s registered to date.
- Don’t forget the downloadable materials prepared to help you promote and celebrate your events.
- Share your event plans and photos on social media using the hashtag #WalkRolltoSchoolDay.
Send us your Walk & Roll to School Day photos! We love to show off all the great community participation for this special event! Please send us your 2024 images so we can use them to promote future events, to include in reports, and for other positive uses promoting safe, active routes for youth. Here’s more detail on submitting your images:
- Email photos to info@walkbiketoschool.org.
- Include this statement in your emails to us: The National Center for Safe Routes to School has permission to use these images for the promotion of walking and biking.
- Indicate the city and state of the event in your photos.

School Breakfast and Lunch Information
We are excited to share that free breakfast and lunch will continue for the 2024-2025 school year! We still encourage families to complete a free and reduced lunch application. It may help families qualify for other programs.
Principal's Corner
Welcome back Little Golden Eagles!
Thank you parents for all of the support you have shown us as we complete our first full month of school! The students are settling in to their new routines. It's still so crucial that you continue to help them have great routines at home. Children require a lot of sleep. It's recommended that children between the ages of 5-11 get between 9-11 hours of sleep each night. So if your student is waking up at 6am then they should be in bed by 8pm to get an average amount of sleep (some kids need more). Having enough sleep will help your student be ready to engage in learning and do all of the great activities that are planned for them throughout the day without too many disrupting factors.
Also, please be mindful of student attendance. We are springboarding into awesome, dynamic instruction, and we want to ensure that your student is an active member of these learning opportunities. Check out some of the information sheets in this newsletter for more information!
Homecoming is right around the corner! We have awesome dress up days for your student to get involved and show their school spirit! There will be a parade downtown on Friday, October 11th. More details about this opportunity will come soon!
Wishing you a wonderful fall!
Educationally yours,
Mr. Jackson
Counseling Corner
Hi Little Eagles!!
I enjoyed meeting 1 on 1 with every student K-2 for minute meetings and learning how their year is going so far! Our Little Eagles are amazing little people and have started strong, with a great year ahead.
Bullying Prevention Month
Wednesday, October 16th we will celebrate UNITY day. We encourage students and staff to wear orange to promote kindness an bullying prevention. Throughout October I will be visiting each classroom for a class lesson on Bullying. Family connection letters will go home once I visit your students class to follow up at home.
K-Kids Peer Mentoring
K-Kids met in September, and we will be kicking off our mentoring program in October. If your student is taking part in K-Kids they will receive a schedule soon of meetings & mentoring schedule. Students were SO exciting after our first meeting and I am just as thrilled to kick off this new club.
Character Strong - Purposeful People
*October we are focusing on RESPONSIBILITY.*
As always, please feel free to reach out if you are in need of resources or if there is a way I can support your student as we move into the new school year.
I can be reached at: ashley.phelps@myeagles.org or 517-769-8557.
News from the Nurse
We are getting into that time of year where more and more students are going home sick. Currently we are seeing a high number of students testing positive for step throat. Other things we are also seeing in moderation is hand, foot and mouth, positive covid cases, and the stomach bug. Please keep an eye out if your student starts to develop any symptoms and keep them home to prevent the spread to other classmates.
During the month of September, the Jackson County Health Department went into each classroom and taught a lesson on germs and handwashing. The students were able to see all the germs on their hands by using a black light and then taught how to properly remove those germs by washing their hands. At the end of October the students will attended an assembly about the importance of taking care of their teeth!
Immunization Reminder
If you have not already, please ensure that your student is either up to date on their immunizations or that they have a valid waiver for the 2024 school year on file.
If you have any questions regarding immunizations, you can contact me at paige.schlegel@myeagles.org. If you would like to apply for a waiver, please contact the Jackson County Health Department to schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience. Thank you.
Attendance Matters!
Showing up to school greatly impacts a student's academic success. Families play a crucial role in ensuring that a student gets to school safely and on time daily. We understand that absences are unavoidable, such as illness or medical appointments. Please call in advance if your child will not be in school.
