zoom_out_map
Need something to keep the kids busy during Christmas break? Make a batch of these soft pretzels. Although they aren't traditional pretzels that are boiled in baking soda water before baked, they are delicious! Try dipping in melted butter and rolling in cinnamon sugar with a drizzle of frosting.

Ingredients

  • 1 and 1/2 cups warm water

  • 1 packet active dry or instant yeast (2 and 1/4 teaspoons)

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 Tablespoon granulated sugar

  • 3 and ¾ cups all-purpose flour (spoon & leveled)

  • 1 large egg, beaten

  • coarse sea salt, for sprinkling

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 425°F
2. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
3. In a large mixing bowl, add warm water, sugar, salt and yeast. Stir and let sit for about 5 minutes to activate the yeast.
4. In a cereal bowl, crack egg and whisk with a fork, SET ASIDE!
5. Add the flour to the yeast mixture and stir until a dough starts to form.
6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Knead the dough for about 3 minutes and shape into a ball.
7. With a sharp knife, cut ball of dough into 12 equal sections.
8. Roll the dough into a ball and then a thin rope. Fold like a pretzel.
9. Dunk the shaped pretzel into the egg wash or spread wash on top with a pastry brush. .
10. Place on baking sheet and sprinkle with salt.
11. Bake for 10 minutes at 425°F. Leave in oven but turn oven off.
12. Turn the oven to broil and bake for 3-5 more minutes to brown the tops. Watch closely to avoid burning!

PLEASE MONITOR YOUR STUDENT'S TECH USE! 📱💻 PLEASE MONITOR YOUR STUDENT'S TECH USE! 📱💻

Technology is an amazing tool in education and provides opportunities for learning that did not exist a couple of decades ago. However, it also creates challenges that did not exist before, either. As teachers and parents, it's important that we be aware of the pitfalls of student internet use.

We are seeing more frequent inappropriate use of technology from our students. At school, our network does filter and block adult content, but occasionally students find loopholes. Even when a search is blocked, we still receive a report of what was typed if it was flagged for a safety or maturity concern (we are seeing self-harm and sexual content flags often right now). Student devices are, of course, not filtered unless a parent has set controls. Also, school devices do not filter content once they leave our network, so they can access any site at home unless you've made adjustments to your router's settings.

We want our middle schoolers to get to be kids as long as possible. We work to protect our students from explicit, disturbing, and dangerous content and intervene when they make questionable searches. Please be aware that if your student has a device, there is a possibility of finding content that is not appropriate for them or their peers. Supervised use and controls for monitoring content are important for keeping your child mentally, socially, and emotionally healthy.
