Books And Donuts Pupusas: Middle School Readers Return To Portland!
The Corbett Middle School book club - Books & Donuts, or B.A.D. Readers - has had another great year of reading, talking about literature, and wolfing down those frosted, delicious carbo-bombs. We meet every six weeks or so during lunch time, spin the magic pencil, and take turns talking about our personal feelings regarding the book, followed by our rating on a scale of 1-5 donuts. This year we’ve read and discussed Song of Achilles, by Madline Miller (3.8 donut average rating), To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee (4.1 donut average), A Wizard of Earthsea, by Ursula K. LeGuin (3.6 donut average), and Solito, by Javier Zamora (rating below).
The last book was chosen as this year’s ‘Everybody Reads’ title by Multnomah County Library and Portland Literary Arts. Continuing our annual tradition, we followed up our reading of the novel with a trip into Portland for some book-themed food and the author talk. For dinner this time, we went to Chepe’s for pupusas, rice, beans, and horchata; authentic Salvadoran food in honor of the author’s roots. After eating, we got a private room in the newly remodeled Central Library to sit, digest, and discuss the book. Solito earned an average of 4.2 donuts pupusas. Wow!
The main event was once again held at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, and was attended by over 2,000 adults and students from high schools around the county. There was actually another middle school there this year! As always, it was a neat opportunity for our students to experience an author’s thoughts on craft, theme, and the issues facing the world today.
When we return from Spring Break, we’ll begin our first-ever Books and Donuts play: William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. It will fit nicely with our Renaissance studies in core classes. Maybe some aebleskiver (Danish donuts) will be in order!

From the Health Room
Multnomah County offers an amazing resource for your school-age students, K-12. The Student Health Centers provide convenient high-quality health care and your family will not be charged for services. Students with or without insurance are seen by a health care provider.
Here are some of the services offered:
Regular exams
Sports physicals
Illness and injuries
Mental health services
Sexual health services
Routine lab tests
Prescription medications
Vision, dental, and blood pressure screenings
Health education, counseling, and wellness promotion
I was able to have a tour of the Centennial HS School-Based Health Center and was amazed at their office, exam rooms, laboratory, and dental hygiene services. The health care provider has access to online specialists, if needed.
This is a great option if you are unable to get a timely appointment with your regular provider or your student needs to get established with a new provider. If you call in the morning, your student may be able to be seen the same day.
The three closes locations to Corbett are:
Reynolds HS: (503) 988-3340
Centennial HS: (503) 988-5488
David Douglas HS (503) 988-3554
Stay safe and healthy,
Julie Nakamura, RN
