VOGELTOWN SCHOOL TE KURA O HUATOKI

WEEK 4, TERM 3, 2025.

VOGELTOWN SCHOOLTE KURA O HUATOKI WEEK 4, TERM 3, 2025.

FROM RYVES... FROM RYVES...

OUR MID YEAR DATA

Following on from the school reports, we have analysed our school achievement information using the descriptors used within these. This analysis is based on the assumption that learners who are Exceeding, At Expectations, or Progressing Towards are likely to meet end-of-year expectations.

Some notable trends across reading, writing, and maths

Most students are on track across all areas, with:

  • 83% on track in Reading
  • 81% in Maths
  • 75% in Writing

Writing shows the greatest need for support, with 25% of students requiring additional help, compared to 19% in Maths and 17% in Reading.

Māori learners have lower achievement and higher support needs than non-Māori across all areas:

  • Reading: 77% on track (vs. 86% non-Māori)
  • Writing: 66% on track (vs. 77% non-Māori)
  • Maths: 77% on track (vs. 82% non-Māori)

Girls outperform boys in Reading and Writing, while achievement is similar in Maths. However, boys are more likely to need support, especially in Writing, where twice as many boys are well below expectations compared to girls.

Year 6 consistently emerges as a high-performing cohort across Reading, Writing, and Maths, with strong proportions of learners on track and the lowest rates of students well below expectations.

Years 2 and 3 are cohorts we will need to monitor, showing the highest proportions of learners needing support.

To address these needs, we are focusing on initiatives that will have the greatest impact on learners. Central to this is the development of our teachers and middle leaders. Our teaching staff have been engaging with the new curriculum, deepening their understanding of effective assessment practices, and refining our school-wide assessment processes. At the leadership level, we are embracing an instructional leadership model - with the goal of raising achievement by directly influencing what happens in classrooms. As some next steps, we are keen to explore evidence-based teaching approaches and culturally responsive pedagogy with a view to implementing these in a cohesive and consistent way across the school.

BOARD ELECTIONS BOARD ELECTIONS

A warm congratulations to our newly elected members of the Vogeltown School Board of Trustees: Thomas Wiseman, Paul Gibbins, Aleisha Vickers, Justin Hawkridge, and Susannah Pitcairn (staff representative).

The Board plays a vital part in shaping the direction of our school, supporting student success and wellbeing, and ensuring strong connections with our community. We’re excited to have you join us in this important role and look forward to the knowledge and perspectives you’ll bring to discussions and decision making.

Thank you for putting your hand up to help make a difference.

WELL DONE TO OUR INTERSCHOOL RUGBY TEAM! WELL DONE TO OUR INTERSCHOOL RUGBY TEAM!

zoom_out_map

Our interschool rugby team put on a fantastic performance in the final against Stratford Primary School. The match was full of determination, with the team showing a never-give-up attitude, relentless chasing and tackling, and some impressive footwork and speed as they challenged Stratford throughout the game.

Unfortunately, the result didn’t go our way, but the team can be incredibly proud of their season. They’ve really gelled as a team, supporting each other every step of the way.

A huge thank you to Mr Goodwin for his time and effort with them. He brings just the right mix of knowledge, patience, and encouragement - both at practices and during games (even when things get a bit tense!). We’re excited to keep an eye on these talented players as they continue their rugby journeys next year and beyond.

WHĀNAU GUMBOOT THROW WHĀNAU GUMBOOT THROW

Who knew that throwing gumboots could be so much fun! Last Friday, we enjoyed a fantastic afternoon together outside to finish the day. Our tamariki had a great time supporting each other and giving the gumboot toss a go - and even though it looks easy, there's definitely some skill involved in getting it to go far and in the right direction... just ask Mr Goodwin!

Well done to everyone who took part, and a special thanks to Mrs Lash for organising the event and being the voice on the microphone for the afternoon.

HANGI HELP HANGI HELP

zoom_out_map

We’re starting to think about our Term 4 hāngī, and we’d love your help to make it happen!

We’re looking for parent and whānau volunteers to support all parts of the process – from preparation, to placing and lifting the hāngī, to serving the food on the day. While this has traditionally been managed by school staff, we’re keen to build greater community involvement so that this special event becomes more sustainable for the future.

Whether you’re a seasoned hāngī hand or just keen to lend a hand, we’d love to hear from you. If you have experience and can guide others or take the lead in certain areas, even better!

We’ve still looking for more helpers - we have had nine responses. If you can help us out please add your details using the link below. We’ll be in touch closer to the time with more information.

We are having great success with the raffle tickets! So much so, that we are almost out of extra books! If you have a book of tickets at home that you are unable to sell, please bring them back to school and we will have them reissued. We really appreciate your support with this fundraiser.

CROSS COUNTRY CROSS COUNTRY

zoom_out_map

This term our school cross country will be held on Thursday 21 August, with a postponement date of Friday 22 August. We’re still finalising the details, but the event will likely take place sometime between 10:00am and 1:00pm.

We’re doing things a little differently this year by heading to Vogeltown Park. It’s a great opportunity to make use of a wonderful community space, and it also gives our tamariki a chance to experience the course used for interschool cross country.

To help the day run smoothly, we’d love to have a team of parent and whānau helpers. With your support, our teachers can stay with their classes and support them.

If you’re available to help out, please let us know by following the link. So far we have eight helpers and are keen for more people. On the day we’ll need people to act as marshals and help record results.

TEACHER ONLY DAY TEACHER ONLY DAY

zoom_out_map

We will be holding a Teacher Only Day on Friday 29 August. On this day, school will be closed for instruction.

The focus of this day is for our teaching team to continue deepening their understanding of the new national curriculum refresh, including how it will shape teaching and learning within our school. This learning is important to ensure we are well prepared to deliver a curriculum that meets the needs of our learners.

We appreciate your support in making this time available for staff.

DAFFODIL DAY - THURSDAY 28TH AUGUST DAFFODIL DAY - THURSDAY 28TH AUGUST

zoom_out_map

Daffodil Day this year is officially being held on Friday 29th August, which is a Teacher Only Day for Vogeltown School. So we are going to acknowledge Daffodil Day a day early, on Thursday 28th August.

We will be collecting gold coin donations and encouraging all tamariki to dress up in yellow.

Daffodil Day is a very important fundraiser for the Cancer Society. Proceeds from Daffodil Day help fund the Cancer Society's vital support services, including transportation to appointments, cancer prevention programs, and research.

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

zoom_out_map

It is important that we know if you have a child starting school sometime in the remainder of this year. This will allow us to put organisation in place for new students - especially those starting school, and to understand our predicted roll throughout the year.

You can do this by contacting the office to confirm that we have your child on our records, or by completing an enrolment form (which can be collected from the school or downloaded off our website).

If you know of anyone else living in zone that may be looking to enrol then please share this message with them.
