Parents United is Back!

Parents United is how Chandler teachers ask parents for help with the small things that eat their prep time: copying, cutting, laminating, assembling. It's simple: a teacher posts what they need, then a cleared parent volunteer picks it up and does it on their own schedule, any time before the teacher's deadline.

You do not need to commit to a shift, a schedule, or a whole year. You pick the tasks you want, when you want them.

For the safety and well-being of all students, students are not permitted to carry medications, including over-the-counter medications such as cough and throat lozenges, during the school day.

If your child requires medication at school, a parent or guardian must complete a Medication Request and Authorization Form and submit it, along with the medication, to Nurse Megan. Please note that some over-the-counter medications may also require a physician's signature before administration.

If you have any questions about your child's medications or medical needs, please feel free to contact Nurse Megan directly.

Thank you for helping us maintain a safe and healthy environment for all students.

October Character Trait is EMPATHY

This month, we are focusing on EMPATHY - the ability to recognize and understand how someone may be feeling. Empathy helps children build friendships, resolve conflicts, show kindness, and create a caring school community. Empathy is a skill that grows with practice, modeling and encouragement from the adults in their lives. Everyday moments at home and school provide wonderful opportunities to help children develop this important life skill!

What Does Empathy Look Like?

Children show empathy when they:

  • Notice when a friend is feeling sad or left out

  • Listen when someone shares their feelings

  • Try to imagine how another person might feel

  • Offer help or kind words to someone who is struggling

  • Include others, even when they are different from them

Remember, empathy doesn't mean we have to agree with someone. It means we try to understand their feelings and perspective.

5 Ways to Build Empathy at Home:

  1. Talk about feelings - ask your child, "what do you think that person might be feeling?" while reading, watching TV or talking about the day.

  2. Practice seeing another perspective - when conflicts happen, encourage your child to consider both sides. "How do you think your friend felt?"

  3. Model kindness - let your child see you listening, helping, apologizing and treating people with respect.

  4. Read together - books are a wonderful way to explore different feelings and experiences. "What would you do if you were that character?"

  5. Celebrate empathetic actions - Notice and name caring behaviors. "I noticed you invited someone to play when they were alone; that was so thoughtful!"

Family Conversation Starters for Dinner or Bedtime:

  • When did someone show you kindness today?

  • Did you notice anyone who might have needed a friend?

  • How can you tell when someone is feeling sad or worried?

  • What is one thing you can do tomorrow to help someone feel included?

Thanks for partnering with us to raise children who are not only successful learners but also caring, compassionate people!

Cheetah Chasers Info

Program Overview

Cheetah Chasers meets every Tuesday when school is in session from 2:55 p.m. to 3:40 p.m. in the gated field on our campus. Students who wish to participate should report to the gym at dismissal, retrieve their QR code bracelet, and then proceed to the basketball court inside the gated fence to wait with Coach LaFlower until the group is ready to begin.

How It Works
Around 3:00 p.m., students will walk together to our jogging course within the gated property. As they complete each lap, students will scan their QR code at an iPad to record their mileage. We will conclude at 3:40 p.m., and students will meet at the bike racks outside the gym entrance.

Mileage Tracking and Recognition
Throughout the program, students have the opportunity to earn token rewards based on completed mileage. Student progress is also tracked through PE running opportunities. The top mileage earners in each grade level will be recognized on our bulletin board outside the music room.

Pickup and Dismissal
Students who walk home will be dismissed at 3:40 p.m. Car riders will wait at the bike racks for pickup. If you are picking up your student, please pull up to the first blue cone, remain in your vehicle, and I will release your child when I see your car. We appreciate your cooperation in loading quickly so other families can pick up as well.

Timely Pickup is Essential
Please note that timely pickup at 3:40 p.m. is expected for all students participating in our program. If a student is consistently not picked up on time, that student will no longer be able to attend Cheetah Chasers. We appreciate your understanding and commitment to ensuring your child is picked up on time for dismissal from Cheetah Chasers.

Important Reminders
Please send your student with a water bottle on jogging days. Coach LaFlower and Ms. Shahada will not be able to leave students unattended for restroom breaks or water.

Cancellations
Cheetah Chasers may be cancelled due to weather, high temperatures (feels-like temperature above 100 degrees), rain, or muddy conditions. Any cancellations will be communicated via email as soon as possible. Please check your email regularly for updates.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. You can contact me at:

david.laflower@allanisd.org
I will respond as soon as possible.

Thank you for encouraging your student to stay active and healthy. We look forward to an exciting year of Cheetah Chasers!

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

david.laflower@allanisd.org
Responderé a la mayor brevedad posible.

Gracias por animar a su estudiante a mantenerse activo y saludable. ¡Esperamos con ilusión un año emocionante de Cheetah Chasers!

Attendance- What Do I Do If My Child is

Attendance - What Do I Do If My Child is Absent?

  • Notify the office by 10:00 am by submitting an Absence Request in Family Access (preferred), calling the office at 469-467-1400 or e-mailing the Registrar.

  • By submitting the Absence Request in Skyward, you will have notified the school and provided the absence note! Otherwise, we must have a signed note from a parent, guardian or doctor stating the reason for the absence. The note needs to include the student’s name and date(s) of the absence(s).

  • By policy, your child’s absence will be recorded as unexcused if we do not receive a note within 3 school days of his/her return – even if you notified the school via phone or email.

  • A doctor’s note will be required for admittance into class if your student is absent more than 5 consecutive school days. This may be in written form, or you may also submit your absence request through Family Access.

  • If your child is absent from school and you would like to pick up his/her homework, you must request the homework by 10:00 am. It will be available for pick up in the office after 3:00 pm.

  • Unless a child is sick, please make every effort to have him/her in school. It is often difficult for young children to ‘catch-up’ when they have been out for several days.

  • Please note that family vacations are not considered excused absences.

Once enrolled in public education, students are required by law to attend. Specific details can be found in the Elementary Student Handbook found online at www.allenisd.org.

What Do I Do When My Child is Late to School?

  • It is imperative that no child be dropped off on the west side (gym side) of the school after the late bell rings at 7:45 am as the doors will be locked.

  • All students should be escorted by their parents to check in at the office when they arrive late to school. Families simply ring the bell to gain access to the building.

  • Students are not considered late if they are coming to school after a doctor’s appointment if a doctor’s note is provided when signing into school for the day.

Lunch Information

Visitors on Campus

  • Ring the bell located on the left side wall at the front of the building (east/flagpole side).

  • Be prepared to show your picture ID.

  • The receptionist will need you to state your name, your student’s name and the reason for your visit before unlocking the door.

  • Approval and an ID badge must be obtained prior to entering the instructional areas of the campus.

  • To volunteer on campus you must have a background check. Click here for more information.

Lunch

  • Students will have a lunch card (includes lunch number) on a lanyard for them to scan in the lunch line.

  • Students may bring their lunches to school if they prefer not to purchase one.

  • Lunches should be sent in containers that students are able to open independently.

  • Carbonated drinks are not recommended as they leak, explode, etc.

  • Students do not have access to a microwave or refrigerator.

  • Lunches may be dropped off at the front desk if forgotten, heated or purchased from a restaurant if the parent is not staying to eat with the student.

  • Please see the PARENTS tab on the Chandler website for additional cafeteria information - https://www.allenisd.org/page/student-nutrition

Lunch Visitors

  • Parents are welcome to eat lunch with their own children at the designated parent table in the cafeteria that are on the stage.
  • We do have specific days in which we ask for no lunch visitors.

  • We ask that parents refrain from eating with their child until August 31. This allows our staff to support students with expectations and procedures in the cafeteria.

  • We also do not allow parents to join their students for lunch on state testing days.

  • When you arrive for lunch, you will need to sign in with the receptionist and then proceed to the lunchroom.

  • For security purposes and to avoid hurt feelings of other students, only your own children will be allowed to sit with you.

  • You are welcome to bring in an outside meal for your student and/or yourself only.

  • If purchasing a tray, please have your child order your meal at the beginning of the day in order to have enough food prepared.

Parents United Parents United

Want to be more involved with partnering with us and your child's education? Join Parents United!

We are looking for parents who want to partner with teachers to encourage, inspire, and grow our students as well as support teachers in various ways. We send out a weekly sign up with volunteer opportunities (work with small group of students, copy, laminate, lunch duty, help in library), this allows you to choose areas you are interested or feel comfortable. This can change from week to week. If interested, please reach out to your child's teacher for more information!
