Decatur Community,
The week ahead is potentially the most hectic week of the year here at DCHS, especially if you throw in the fact that we just had a Home Volleyball Invitational this past weekend that lasted about 10 hours.
This week sees a home JV football game, a home volleyball game that is both a quad and a "Senior Night," a home JH football and volleyball game (at the same time as a parade and bonfire), and a home Varsity football game. All of that during Homecoming Week, with a day's worth of activities and a dance after the game. That's 4 out of 5 nights during Homecoming Week that the facilities are all alive.
It's a busy, exciting, chaotic, and wonderful time!
With all that on the table to discuss next week, I will keep this week brief.
SHOUTOUTS
Shoutout to every worker that helped out this weekend at the Home Volleyball Invitational. When you have 5 teams playing a JV and Varsity round robin in 2 gyms, you know it's going to be a long day with a lot of workers. I won't list anyone so that no one is forgotten, but it was a tremendous effort on the part of many.
Shoutout to Mrs. Jenny Tally. I fibbed a bit. I am going to single her out for the Hospitality Room at the tournament. Kicking it off were breakfast sandwiches, and later in the day came pulled pork and a homemade cake, all of which were extremely popular. There were other dishes and sides, and her efforts were complimented by many.
Shoutout to some great efforts by students of all grades as they decorated the hallways for Homecoming. Students were given time during Mentoring on multiple days throughout the week to work together with an idea to recognize their allotted decade. Students worked well together, and many even came back after school to make sure they got it just the way they wanted it. Even as late as Saturday, judges were scoring the work in the class competition.
Shoutout to my amazing group of substitute teachers. They are DCHS staff members. Our subs give us so much experience and dependability. I am not kidding when I say that I have more subs in this district that I can count on than I had in a 9-12 building with over 600 students before I came. This week alone Rhonda Barth, Tim Breth, Pat Dorshorst, Betsy Haag, Susan Nelson, and Jeanie Unger were all in the building at one point or another, and Marianne Larue is on the schedule soon. I count my lucky stars every day that we have such a great group of veterans that not only sub when asked, but also enjoy it.
Shoutout to Ms. Breyana Gehring. The 2023 grad and reigning Homecoming Queen returned home to Oberlin this weekend and made her KSHSAA officiating debut. She made the long haul from K-State to help out in her old arena to make money, see family, and help out ol' Dad. It was great to see her, and she was a natural.
Shoutout to Mrs. Tessa Anderson. Aside from being a magnificent addition to our staff as a new math teacher, this weekend she was married, officially earning that r in her surname. A wedding day is never forgotten, and I know we all wish the best for her and her husband Gabe (an Oberlin grad). She has been such a blessing to us with her constant smile and positive attitude, and I hope that Oberlin and DCHS are her home for a very long time.

Early Release Wednesday
There will be Early Release Days from school on the first Wednesday of most months. Teachers will meet together in teams, and it will give them some much needed time to meet together in groups, work on data, and plan for the following month.
This Wednesday, October 4th, students will be released from DCHS at 2:00.
Red Devil Ready
Well, that's going to do it. Now, I probably need to get to sleep, because there isn't going to be a lot of that this week. At least not until Saturday, when, amazingly, the busiest week of them all ends with silence.
Until next week,
Jeremy Holloway
Go Big Red!
