What should I do if there is an event or an emergency at my child's school?
Parents should follow these steps to ensure safety and provide support effectively:
Stay Informed
- Monitor Official Communications: Schools often have emergency notification systems (texts, emails, or phone calls). Pay attention to updates from the school or district.
Please note that Social Media Outlets, like Facebook, are often NOT reliable sources of information in an emergency situation.
Do Not Go to the School Immediately
- Rushing to the school can interfere with emergency response efforts and may create additional safety risks.
- Wait for clear instructions on whether it is safe to pick up your child and where to go.
Communicate Appropriately
- Avoid calling your child’s phone excessively as this may disrupt emergency operations.
- Wait for the school to provide updates before contacting them.
Follow Emergency Procedures
- Schools have emergency protocols for different situations (e.g., lockdowns, evacuations).
Trust that trained staff are implementing these plans.
Be Ready to Provide Identification
- If instructed to pick up your child, go to the designated reunification site and bring identification. Schools will require this to release students.
Prepare in Advance
- Familiarize yourself with the school’s emergency procedures and reunification plans.
- Ensure your contact and emergency contact information is up-to-date with the school.
- Discuss emergency plans with your child so they know what to expect and how to stay safe.
Stay Calm
- Demonstrate calmness to reduce anxiety for both your child and others. Children look to adults for cues during stressful situations.
IN AN EMERGENCY, TAKE ACTIONI
A uniform, planned, and practiced response to any incident is the foundation of a safe school. Safe business. Safe community. The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) is action-based, flexible, and easy to learn. It rationally organizes tactics for response to weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to personal safety.
HOLD All Classes
Students are trained to remain in their classrooms while staff and/or first responders attend to an emergency that will not impact the students in their classrooms. This might be used if an ambulance is called for staff or student illness.
SECURE
LOCK DOWN
This is called when there is a possible threat within the building. Staff bring students inside the classroom and lock the door. Students are trained to go to a safe space in their classroom and remain quiet until first responders give the “all clear.”
EVACUATION
Leaving the classroom to go to a safer location. A fire drill is an example of an evacuation drill.
SHELTER
Students are instructed to move to a safe place within the building. This procedure may be necessary during a weather emergency like a tornado.
BARK FOR SCHOOLS
BARK is a digital safety platform that helps schools by monitoring online activities to ensure students' safety and well-being.

Community Developmental Screenings for Preschool-Age Children
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) guidelines recommend the screening of young children to identify those who may have special learning or developmental needs, as well as to plan appropriate curriculum and instruction.
District 49 Early Childhood Education staff will be offering developmental screenings (to include vision, hearing, and dental) for children between the ages of 2 years and 9 months until they are eligible for kindergarten (child is 5 before October 1st of that year). Screening will be by appointment only.
If your child has developmental delays, is at risk of having a developmental delay due to a diagnosed medical condition, or has an educational disability, please contact our Child Find office by emailing childfind@d49.org.
