Student Accident Insurance
Manitoba School Boards Association has created supplemental Student Accident Insurance materials. All three brochures have been added to the Student Accident Insurance page on the HSD website at https://hsd.ca/parents/student-accident-insurance/
The MMS school community sends a huge thank you to Mitchell’s Giant Construction and Enex Siding for bringing our PAC-led wind shelter project to life! Giant provided the skill, knowledge, and labour to build the shelter, while Enex generously donated time and materials to make it look incredible. Both companies were crucial to completing this project, and we truly appreciate their generosity and commitment to our school. Work is now beginning to install the plexiglass and set up the picnic tables! Thank you to our PAC and these fantastic local partners for creating a welcoming space for our school community.

Congratulations to the Mitchell Middle School Cross Country Team on an Outstanding Season!
Congratulations to all our Mitchell Middle School cross country runners on an incredible season! Throughout the season, our athletes demonstrated tremendous grit, determination, and perseverance, pushing through challenging courses and giving their best effort at every race. Their hard work, positive attitudes, and support for one another were truly impressive. A special congratulations goes out to both our Grade 5 Boys' and Grade 5 Girls' teams, who captured the Divisional Championship banners with outstanding team performances! We also had some remarkable individual achievements, with six athletes earning medals based on their combined results from our two divisional races. Congratulations to Savannah Matthews (Gold), Sophia Schneider (Silver), Dayne Reimer (Silver), Emily Kryvytska (Bronze), Lewis Niessen (Bronze), and Theo Regula (Bronze)! We are extremely proud of every runner who represented Mitchell Middle School this season. Your dedication, sportsmanship, and willingness to push through challenges made this a season to remember. Way to go, Mitchell Warriors!
Volleyball Season is Here!

Indoor Track Volunteers Needed!
We are looking to see if any parents would be interested in volunteering with Mitchell Middle School's Indoor Track Program this year! Volunteers would assist with general student supervision and help run events at our track meets under the direction of an event leader. Responsibilities may include helping with timing, raking sand pits, measuring jumps, and other simple tasks to help our meets run smoothly. No previous track and field experience is necessary! All trips to the University of Manitoba will be by HSD school bus. Please note that meets in the new year will require leaving before the start of the school day and returning close to 5:00 p.m. The schedule is included below for your reference. If you are interested in volunteering for one or more of these dates, please let me know! We greatly appreciate the support of our parent volunteers in helping provide these opportunities for our students. Please contact Mr Tufford if you are interested at dtufford@hsd.ca.

Reminder About Dress Code Expectations
In our society we are able to dress differently in different circumstances - for example, we may dress one way while we are at the beach, but another way while we are at a wedding. However, we would not think to mix up our dress for those very different occasions!
At MMS, we expect our students to dress in a manner that reflects the purpose of school, to learn. This includes during their break times outside and during Phys Ed. Families may refer to the MMS Student Handbook (page 16) for a representative (but not exhaustive) list of the MMS Dress Code expectations by clicking here. This Dress Code has been developed and maintained in partnership with the MMS Parent Advisory Council and is occasionally reviewed and updated together.
Please review these expectations with your child - if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at the school to discuss further.
We are Scent Free!
Here is s friendly reminder that MMS is a scent-free building. Please avoid wearing perfumes, colognes, body sprays, or strongly scented products while at school. Fragrances can cause serious reactions for some members of our school community. Thank you for helping keep MMS a safe, healthy, and welcoming place for everyone here.
School Bus Update
MMS Families,
HSD Transportation has updated their system for those students who travel by bus to and from school.
If you are bus eligible, you can log onto your parent portal to view the information about your bus route and driver. There may also be information about your child’s pick up location and time.
If you are a new registrant or have moved over the summer and may now be living at a bus eligible address, please use the link below to complete a REQUEST FOR TRANSPORTATION FORM.
https://hsd.ca/services/transportation-inquiries/
If you need any other information or have further questions about bussing, there is also a phone number on the HSD website when you click the link.
Thanks!
Leaving School Grounds at Lunch
Please be reminded of the following policies for our students at lunch time:
- students who go home for lunch each day are dismissed at 12:12. They are expected to remain home for the lunch break, and return for 1:07 pm to rejoin their classes.
- please be reminded that afternoon classes start at 1:12 pm
- students who wish to go to the CO-OP at lunch require a note or email from their parents that is given to the homeroom teacher in the morning before 9:00. MMS requires new permission each time a student wishes to leave at lunch time. When they leave, they should sign out at the office, and sign in when they return.
- parents please be reminded to send a note or email to your child's homeroom teacher to communicate whether your child will eat lunch at school or at home. This helps us account for our students in the event of a lunch time emergency.
School Fees
School fees at MMS are used to support the different programs, learning experiences, and learning trips that our students benefit from while they are here. We appreciate all efforts made to ensure student fees are paid as early in the school year as possible. Payments can be made online on the Parent Portal, or by cash or cheque at the school office between 8:00 - 4:00 pm. Alternative payment arrangements can also be made by contacting the school office at 204-320-9488 or by email at mms@hsd.ca. Student account balances change throughout the school, so please visit the Parent Portal for your child's current school balance.
Thank you!

Volunteers Wanted and Appreciated!
Parents and caregivers, if you have interest in helping out around the school, in your child's class, or in another classroom, we would love to have you! In addition to the appreciated help that school volunteers provide, research shows when students see their parents in the school building the students themselves feel a greater sense of belonging and connection to the school. It's also a great way for parents to stay connected to the life of the school!
There are a variety of services that parent volunteers can contribute to the school including but not limited to:
- reading to students
- listening to students read
- working with small groups or individual students in areas of expertise
- putting up bulletin boards of student work
- supervising on learning trips
- assisting with classroom prep or organization
- lots of other opportunities
If you have interest in helping out,
- start by ensuring that your volunteer paperwork is up to date (more information on that is found lower in the newsletter). All adults who work with our students must have their volunteer paperwork completed and approved before volunteering in the school.
- Criminal Record Check
- Child Abuse Registry Check
- Pledge of Confidentiality
- Respect in Sport (if coaching)
- contact your child's homeroom teacher (click here to see our staff page) to indicate your interest in supporting the teacher and students. If possible, also indicate what kind of tasks you would be able and willing to support, as well as your availability (every day? once a week? once a month?), and how much notice you would need. Different teachers and subject areas will have different needs.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mr. John Terrick (principal) or Mr. Gus Durksen (Vice Principal) at the school
Digital Technology in the Classroom
Leveraging digital technology in our classrooms supports personalized learning, real time assessment, authentic rich learning contexts, and provides opportunity to connect families with their children’s learning experiences. By using in-class digital technology, students have opportunity to explore beyond the walls of the classroom; share what they have learned; collaborate with others, and demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Scrapping Club
Scrapping Club has been very busy, and is still running every week at MMS. We are always on the lookout for more items to scrap, so as you do your "Spring Cleaning" keep our club in mind.
Items like appliances (washers, dryers, stoves, microwaves, etc.), electronics (computers, receivers, monitors, TVs, etc.), are very common. Basically, anything made with metal, that has a motor, or can be plugged in.
If you have something like that, and it's time to get rid of it, please consider giving it to our scrapping club.
Please contact Wendell Head at whead@hsd.ca to make arrangements or if you have any questions.
MMS Highlights Our Nutrition Grant & Soups On Partnership
HSD and MMS continue to be grateful for the support of the Provincial Nutrition Grant, which allows us to provide healthy snacks for our students throughout the school day. This initiative plays an important role in ensuring that all children have access to nutritious options to support their learning and well-being.
Recently, we have noticed an increased uptake in both our healthy snack program and the Soups On bag lunch program. These programs are designed to supplement students’ nutrition needs, particularly for those who may not have access to enough food throughout the day. We would appreciate your support in having a conversation with your child about when and how to access these snacks. Encouraging responsible use will help ensure that the program continues to benefit all students who need it most.
Thank you for your partnership in fostering a healthy and supportive school environment. We do not take the trust and support of the community lightly. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.
