MCAS Reminders

MCAS Math testing sessions will take place on Monday and Tuesday mornings for all grade 7 HMS students. Please make sure you:

  • Fully charge your Chromebook and put it in a prominent spot where it won't be forgotten in the morning.
  • Chromebooks will be "MCAS-enabled" from Sunday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon, and will have no other functionality during that time.

SPECIAL NOTE – The MCAS test is on a new platform this year. It is highly recommended that on Sunday evening you power down your Chromebook and power it back up until you notice the APPS icon in the lower left corner. This may take a few tries, but it will be better to have this process take place at home rather than be delayed on Monday morning. If it doesn’t work after a few attempts we will assist you on Monday morning.

  • Get a full night's sleep and eat a nutritious breakfast before school!
  • Be on Time!!!!!
  • Smile – We got this!

Also, we ask that parents do not dismiss their children on MCAS days unless for a previously planned appointment or a family emergency. Testing will take place during the first 3-4 blocks in the morning and then we will return to our normal class schedule for the remainder of the day.

Something to Talk About: Social Media Challenges

As you are most likely aware, over the past several years people who are active on various social media platforms are exposed to, and often participate in different “challenges”. While most of these are harmless diversions, some can have dangerous and even deadly consequences. One of the most recent “challenges” gaining in popularity involves attempting to cause a Chromebook to catch fire.

Aside from the fact that the Chromebooks are school property and must be cared for and used appropriately, this particular “challenge” places anyone in the vicinity at great risk. Both the fire that can result from this activity and the related smoke it causes are extremely dangerous and have resulted in a need to evacuate schools in other Massachusetts districts.

We ask that you please talk with your children about making positive and safe choices, and to stop and think about the potential consequences before they act.

We believe that by working together we can help our children avoid impulsive decisions that could have serious, long term repercussions, both disciplinary and safety related.

Thank you.

HMS OBOS Presents: AAPI Heritage Month Workshop Series

Hingham Middle School’s One Book, One School committee is excited to announce the AAPI Heritage Workshop Series! These culturally engaging, student-centered experiences during the month of May will be held in recognition of Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. Workshops will include activities such as the art of origami, tai chi, Chinese calligraphy, Kintsugi, and more. Set to kick off on May 5 after school at HMS, the workshop series will focus on presenting enriching activities and opportunities to celebrate the arts and culture of Asians and Pacific Islanders in America. Through the generosity of the PTO, resources have been made available for students to explore cultural touchstones and connect to AAPI heritage and customs. The series is open to all HMS students who are interested in trying new things, being creative, developing leadership skills, building community, and having fun celebrating AAPI Heritage month.

Tunnels to Towers

In honor of Memorial Day, the 7th Grade Pirate Team will be collecting donations to Tunnels to Towers to remember and honor our fallen soldiers, servicemen, and women, along with their families. Tunnels to Towers has been helping America’s heroes by providing mortgage-free homes to fallen first responder families with young children and by building specially-adapted smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders. They are also committed to eradicating veteran homelessness and helping America to Never Forget September 11, 2001. On Wednesday, May 21st we will collect the donations during homeroom. We hope students and teachers can join us in wearing Red, White, and Blue to show support.
