Principal’s Corner

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to attend your child’s conference. We hope the information you received and the conversations you had were meaningful, helped strengthen relationships, and supported your child’s growth.

As we move toward Winter Break, please note that we will be wrapping up the second quarter of school on January 16. Mid-year i-Ready assessments will take place throughout the month of January.

We also hope you will join us for an evening of singing and cheer on December 16 for our Wilson Winter Concert. Mrs. Harper has been preparing all grade levels with fun holiday songs to send everyone into break in good spirits.

Family Engagement

Thank you for participating in our Family Engagement survey during conferences. We value parent involvement and believe that a strong partnership between parents, teachers, and our school community is vital for the success of our students.

Winter Reading

To encourage reading over winter break, create a cozy reading nook with blankets and pillows, and make reading a fun family activity. Kids of all ages love it when their family reads aloud to them. Start out by choosing a book the whole family will enjoy, and then commit to making time each day to slow down, snuggle together, and enjoy the closeness of reading together. You can also watch a movie adaptation of a book, integrate reading into other activities, visit the library, use audiobooks for travel, and explore different genres to keep children engaged.

Birthday Cupcakes

Each month, our principals will celebrate all students with birthdays during that month at our monthly assembly. Students will then be invited to enjoy lunch and a cupcake with Principal Lavelle and Assistant Principal Sanders.

This is a fun way to recognize birthdays, and families do not need to send in additional cupcakes for their child, though you are always welcome to do so if you wish. We hope this helps make birthdays a little easier and more special for everyone!

Dress for Inclement Weather

With cold morning temperatures, please make sure your child is ready for any type of weather. We want to make sure the students have an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible, so they will need coats, long pants in colder temperatures, and appropriate shoes.

Also, please make sure your child's jacket is labeled with their name.

Extra Clothes

Sending your child to school with an extra set of clothes is essential for handling unexpected situations like wet weather or accidents. Whether it’s a rainstorm or a spill, having spare clothes ensures that your child stays comfortable and can continue learning without interruption. It also helps avoid any distress or embarrassment that could come from being wet or uncomfortable during the school day.

Give the Gift of Attendance!

The holiday season can bring distractions, but school attendance remains essential. Missing school just two days a month (September - June) equals nearly four weeks lost per year. Let’s finish the year strong by staying present and learning together!

Why Attendance Matters

Why Consistent Attendance Matters: Missing just 2 days per month can lead to chronic absenteeism, putting students at risk for falling behind in reading and math. Early grades are foundational, and absences can have long-term academic impacts.

Legal Requirement: Compulsory Attendance Oregon law requires all children from age 5 (if enrolled) or 6 to 18 to attend school regularly unless exempt. Parents or guardians are responsible for ensuring their child's attendance. A student who attends more than 90% of their enrolled school days is classified as a regular attender. This is the benchmark used by the Oregon Department of Education.
