Principal's Report Principal's Report

Term 1 Week 4 - Principal’s Report

What a wonderful start to the year we have experienced at Woonona PS! The students have settled in extremely well to their new classes, getting to know their teacher and classmates.

This is the first newsletter for the year, however, there has been a great deal of communication sent out already, please refer to these documents for more detailed information around class organisation and staffing. A reminder that we no longer use Sentral and are now using School Bytes. If you need any assistance with accessing or using this new platform, please see our friendly staff in the front office.

It’s already Week 4 and we are in full swing, with so many things having already occurred and much more to come!

So many things happening……….

All staff attended school in Week 1 for four School Development Days. It was a wonderful way to start the year, providing time for staff to participate in quality professional learning, work in their teams to collaboratively plan for their students and work on class formations.

It was great to have all students in their 2026 classes by midday on Tuesday 3 February. This is the earliest that we have been in new classes for many years. I commend the students on how quickly they adjusted to their new classes, really making the most of working and learning together with new people.

We have already welcomed the Dragons into our school this year, they provided a highly energetic and interactive session on Monday 9 February, with all of our Stage 2 and Stage 3 students.

We have successfully held elections for House Captains and SRC representatives in the last week. Letters inviting families of these students to attend our official Induction ceremony will be sent out this week. I know there are some school leaders who are also eagerly awaiting to receive their badges!

Last Wednesday 11 February saw our P&C meet for the first time this year, and what a wonderful meeting it was. We have a highly engaged P&C that supports our school and students in a variety of ways and I look forward to continuing to work closely with them for some exciting projects this year.

It was super exciting to welcome the Conservatorium of Music into our school last week, to deliver weekly lessons to all Stage 3 students this term. Special thanks must go to the P&C who is kindly subsidising half of the cost for every student. More detailed information was sent home last week, via School Bytes regarding this exciting new opportunity for our students.

Last Thursday 12 February saw us hold our annual school swimming carnival. Special thanks must be given to Mr Heffernan and Ms Cheney who convened an efficient carnival. With over 140 students attending, it proved to be one of most highly attended swimming carnivals in recent years. Competitors endured all weather, as it rained the heaviest when it was time for backstroke, not ideal!

The students must be commended for not only their eagerness and positivity but how respectful and attentive they were when being marshalled for their events. Ribbons and results will be shared shortly. The District carnival is on next Tuesday 24 February. Notes to eligible students were sent home today.

More exciting things coming up…….

Tomorrow sees our annual Meet the Teacher afternoon, 3:15-4:00pm. However, this year it is taking on a new life with the P&C hosting a BBQ. We hope this provides an afternoon for families to enjoy an opportunity to meet and engage with each other in a more social setting. Families are encouraged to bring their children along, getting them to show you their classroom and introduce families to their teacher/s. A reminder this is an informal event, a time to meet and greet. If a longer timeslot is required to chat with a teacher about specific things please arrange a time to meet separately. I look forward to seeing you all there!

Our Year 5 students will head off to Woonona High School next Wednesday 25 February, a valuable opportunity for students to start a smooth transition. Information regarding this event was sent home last week.

Some reminders…….

A reminder that our school day starts at 8:55am.

School grounds are supervised from 8:30am. Please do not send your child to school prior to this, as there is no supervision. I have seen numerous students waiting outside the gates as early as 8:00am. This is far too early, as their safety cannot be assured prior to 8:30am. If you need supervision prior to 8:30am please make contact with our wonderful OOSH, they are very accommodating and we are so fortunate to have them onsite.

It has been wonderful to see our students in school hats, they look great! Just a reminder, if a school hat is lost or misplaced, they are available to purchase from the front office, there’s no need to go through the uniform shop to purchase one.

Lastly, if needing to make contact with the school please see the various ways you can do this on the ‘Communicating with our school’ flyer included at the end of this newsletter. It will also be shared via School Bytes. The ‘Communicating with our school’ factsheet provides guidelines on how to most effectively request contact, via phone call, email etc.

The first point of call should always be the classroom teacher, as they know your child best and will most likely be able to address your concern/query. In the event that you have done this and still feel the need for some further information, the Assistant Principal for each stage should be your next point of call. Our Assistant Principals oversee everything that occurs within their stage. A reminder that our Assistant Principals for each stage are:

Kindergarten: Mrs Banzon Mon - Wed & Mrs Barnaby (relieving) Thurs & Fri

Stage 1: Mr Calaizis

Stage 2: Mrs Bleeker Mon - Thurs & Mr Loosemore (relieving) Fri

Stage 3: Ms Phillips

For more serious matters or situations that have not been resolved by going through the above steps the next point of call is the Deputy Principal, which is Mrs McLerie this term.

For more urgent matters, or matters that have not been resolved through the above steps the Principal is the person to contact.

Please be assured that all of the executive team; Assistant Principals, the Deputy Principal and myself liaise on a daily basis and will intervene at various times if we see a situation calls for it.

As always, we prefer families to reach out to us to seek clarification and raise concerns before things become overwhelming or unmanageable. We would prefer to work with our families in the early stages, as opposed to responding to situations that have gotten a little bigger than they perhaps needed to be.

We are very fortunate to work and live in such a wonderful community and look forward to the year that we all have ahead of us.

Woonona sure is a busy place and has something happening for everyone!

Ms Alison Strinic

Relieving Principal

Applying for extended leave Applying for extended leave

Any family wishing to take five or more school days of extended leave (for travel purposes) should complete the relevant paperwork. A certificate will be completed by the school and provided to the family, prior to their trip. This certificate can be used, whilst on your trip, should it ever be requested by authorities. Please note that this is an expectation from the NSW Department of Education. It is important to also note that requests should be made, where possible, well in advance of the leave occurring, to ensure that all paperwork can be completed.

The application form can be found on our school website
